The BYD (EV) Thread

Boogeymen around every corner?
Life is a little simpler than you make sometimes it I think.

There are a full two "used" BYD seals in South Africa (as per your post). And those cars have some km on the clock, which is the polar opposite of the practice mentioned in China.

As I said, it would be great if they were selling new cars as used, but right now they're selling used car at new prices.

Also selling "new" cars as used is not something we really have a problem with here given how difficult it is to import used cars into SA...

They're likely being sold into the rest of Africa though.

I do find it weird that they're struggling with stock in the current market though.

They aren't actually struggling with stock so much as the stock is largely only being delivered once its ordered at this point as I could understand it.

And we only have so many RoRo's a week into the country.

I imagine the same would be true for spares. This is one issue with new cars in general.

I think spares are an easier game to play, you can hold spares for a period of time before they start losing money, but I've also experienced a poor availability of spares from all the manufacturers over the last few years, its all in JHB these days and has a day or two transit time to DBN/CPT

BYD Sealion 5 PHEV takes on Kia Sportage from £30k

Ninth UK-bound model from Chinese giant will offer up to 53 miles of electric-only range

BYD will undercut the Kia Sportage and Ford Kuga with a new plug-in hybrid SUV called the Sealion 5, available to order now from just under £30,000.

The Sealion 5 is BYD's ninth car in the UK and its fourth PHEV, joining the technically related DM-i versions of the Seal U, Seal 6 and Atto 2.

It measures 4.74m long, putting it about halfway between Kia's Sportage and Sorento.

As standard it uses a PHEV powertrain that combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for 215bhp and a 0-62mph time of as little as 7.7sec.

Energy is stored in either a 13kWh or 18.3kWh battery, the latter of which is good for 53 miles of electric-only range and helps the SUV achieve 134.5mpg and combined CO2 emissions of just 48g/km on the WLTP test cycle.

The Sealion 5 is available in two trims: entry-level Comfort, at £29,995, includes 'vegan leather' upholstery, a 12.8in rotating touchscreen, smartphone mirroring, a six-way adjustable driver's seat and a rear-view camera.

With the massive influx of Chinese automotive brands entering South Africa, EVs are becoming more accessible in the local market. BYD teases the flagship Seal 08 sedan and Sealion 08 SUV

BYD just previewed its two upcoming flagship models, the Seal 08 sedan and the Sealion 08 SUV. Unfortunately, the teaser doesn't reveal much except that they are mid-to-large vehicles in their own segments. The carmaker also shared two images, depicting the cars in themed ocean camo, since they are part of the Ocean series.

The company teased the two models in December last year and shared its plans to focus more on the premium market in 2026, so the Seal 08 and the Sealion 08 will mark BYD's major push into the segment.

The new EVs are set to launch in the first quarter of 2026, and they won't be alone. BYD is planning to release two more flagship models from the Dynasty lineup, but those are scheduled for the first half of this year.

I've been invited for coffee and a test drive at BYD. Currently drive a Next Gen Ranger Wildtrak.

Which BYD would you choose to test drive? (Not sure if I want to use the opportunity on the Shark...)
