The BYD (EV) Thread

BYD eyes a new home in Volkswagen’s famous Transparent Factory

The city of Dresden in Germany is famous for its history and beautiful buildings. One of those buildings is a car factory made almost entirely of glass. Volkswagen used this "Transparent Factory" to show off its best engineering. Now, the quiet halls might soon fill up with the sound of workers building Chinese electric cars. Sources say that BYD is talking to Volkswagen about moving into part of the famous site.

Volkswagen stopped making cars at the Dresden plant at the end of 2025. The factory, known as the Gläserne Manufaktur, first opened its doors in 2002. It was a special project for the luxury VW Phaeton. Later, workers there built Bentley cars and the electric e-Golf. Most recently, it was the home of the ID.3. Even though it looks amazing, the factory only produced about 6,000 units of the ID.3 every year. With only 205 employees, it was more of a trophy case than a high-speed assembly line.

BYD is the biggest seller of EVs in the world, and they want a bigger piece of the European market. If the deal goes through, BYD would invest money to set up production in one half of the glass building. The other half of the factory is already spoken for. The state of Saxony and a local university, TU Dresden, want to turn that space into a center for new technology. This "innovation hub" will likely cost around €50 million to set up.

Buying or renting space from a rival might seem strange, but it helps both companies. Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume said that sharing factory space with Chinese companies is a smart move. Volkswagen is trying to shrink its global production from 12 million cars down to 9 million cars. They have a lot of extra room and not enough work to fill it. Selling or leasing parts of their factories helps them cut costs while they figure out their own future.

Sharing space with China and “centre of new technology” a good idea? Have the westerners learnt nothing of chinas expropriation ways?

BYD brings advanced LiDAR tech to its smallest budget EV

The 2026 BYD Seagull, which goes by the names Dolphin Mini and Dolphin Surf, was revealed in China. The visual differences between the new model and the previous one are hard to spot - apart from a surprise it carries on its roof. For the first time in this price range, a car company is offering LiDAR technology. This sensor helps the car "see" the world using lasers. Until now, we could only find this expensive tech on more expensive EVs, but BYD is bringing it to the masses.

The 2026 BYD Seagull starts at a price that makes a lot of gas-powered cars look expensive. The base model, called the Vitality Edition, costs RMB 69,900 - that is about €8,800. If you want the top-tier Flying Edition without the LiDAR sensor, it costs RMB 85,900, or roughly €10,800. The big news is the "God's Eye B" system. This is an optional package that adds the LiDAR sensor. The most expensive version with all the bells and whistles costs RMB 97,900, which is about €12,300.

This tiny electric vehicle comes in four different versions. Two versions use a 30.08 kWh battery. These models can travel 305 km on a single charge. If you need to go further, you can pick a version with a 38.88 kWh battery. That larger battery allows the car to travel up to 405 km. Every version uses the same electric motor. It produces 55 kW of power, which is about 74 horsepower. It also has 135 Nm of torque. It is not a race car, but it can go from 0 to 50 km/h in 4.9 seconds - plenty of oomph for driving around town.

BYD added two new colors to the 2026 lineup: Mango Orange and Mint Green. If those are too bright for you, the Warm Sun White and Peach Powder are still available. The car sits on 16-inch "Starlight" wheels and has updated LED lights in the back. The size of the car remains very small. It is 3780 mm long, 1715 mm wide, and 1540 mm tall.

Inside the cabin, things look modern and simple. There is a new interior color choice called "Oatmeal Rice." The center of the dashboard features a 12.8-inch high-definition screen that lets the driver control the car. To make life easier, BYD added a 50W wireless charger for phones. There are also heated front seats and a power-adjustable seat for the driver. These are nice features for a car that costs so little.
