Can someone explain this to me, perhaps?

So, this is from another thread:

In theory 4 should be moved to "up to 10" but that will depend on exchange infrastructure, i.e. are there still 10Mbps ports available on the DSLAM, is there a 10Mbps DSLAM in the exchange, what is the condition of the copper access network in your area, etc.?

This is what I am getting now:

I am trying to figure out of the ISP portion is maxing this out or whether it's still at 4 Mbps....

It seems I am, latest speedtest:

Now, at that speed, it seems perhaps downgrading to the 4Mbps would make sense, unless it's possible to get things syncing higher than as above.

Any info from all and sundry appreciated, of course!

The pertinent point is that I appear to be getting the speed my line is syncing at (6Mbps), where as previously, I was syncing at this speed, but only getting 4 Mbps from Telkom ISP.

So I have now made the (possibly erroneous) assumption that with the upgrades, what was previously a 4 meg account (ISP wise), will become a 10 meg account.

Which would make me intensely curious as to the possibility of syncing at a higher speed.

I have no idea how the system works (I presume they push it as far as possible until the connection starts dropping?).

In any event, I decided to phone ADSL support, to ask that simple question (is it possible to sync at a higher speed, and if not, I was just curious as to the technical cause of why not, no big deal...

The thing that really did my head in is the (apparent) complete and utter lack of comprehension displayed by the person I was talking to. She kept insisting I should should be syncing at ten (once the engineers are finished with some variety of work or the other), but if I have already been syncing at six for he past couple of weeks/months, surely I am at ten and constrained by technical issues such as distance and noise, etc?

Does any of this make sense? Do you understand why the interaction left me confused and frustrated?

Don't ask them questions that are not on their scripted answer sheets!

True. It is sometimes truly astonishing though, and a bit awkward, as it must be difficult dealing with someone who clearly knows you are incorrect and keeps pointing out why, and you don't even have a rudimentary understanding of the very systems you are supporting. I do have sympathy for the individuals in support, but certainly not for the larger process (whatever it is) that keeps them all so ignorant.

PM a link of this thread to TelkomZA and ask that they check your ISP profile. Should be on 'up to 10Mbps'.

Will do!

I am on the 10 Meg, and now the process will be to see how high we can get it to sync.

Curious to see what transpires.

Still not entirely certain what the story is ISP wise...

Telkom ADSL number showed my exchange was 10Mbps capable and I could get now up to 10Mbps (previously 4Mbps) after the latest round of updates.

Dropped TelkomZA a PM and he was able to move me to a stable 8Mbps from 6Mbps, made upgrading to 10Mb uncapped worthwhile. MSANs sometime next year should get me the rest of the way (041360 MickeyD?) :)

-Post a screenshot of the statistics page
-log onto telkoms guest account
-Goto www.saix.co.za do the speed test and post a pic

-Set your DSL mode to "ADSL2"

Shall do when I have a chance. May I ask why?

I was synching at 6MB and had the same problem with Telkom. My exchange was upgraded to 10MB but the Telkom call centre couldn't help me. They either told me that it was already 10MB and my distance from the exchange was causing my line to be 6MB capable only or they transferred me to another department. It was an endless loop that resulted in me ending the call.

Today, I tried again and got someone to re-sync my line. He told me that he also did a port reset and I was asked to switch off my modem, wait a few seconds and switch it on again. Once it connected, I checked the sync speed and BAM!, it was 10MB. The option I selected when calling Telkom was to choose to report an ADSL fault. Good luck. You will need it.

You shall see when the results are in.

Cool, will do all this tomorrow, shot guys.

OP Update?

****, sorry, been busy.

Will have to do it over the weekend.

I have been in contact with the Telkom rep, and the process is apparently going to be done, to see what I can sync at. This was a couple of days ago, and have still not heard anything further...

Oh, pardon.

Sorted all this out - If you are on the 4M package, and your line gets upgraded to 10M, then you stay on the 4M package, ISP side.

Spoke to the rep and we got it syncing at 8, but it was unstable, as well as pointless, due to the ISP portion speed.

saw a thread here somewhere....

if your line stays at 4meg then you must ask telkom to adjust their billing, as you are now effectively being billed for 10meg.
