Well, its the 20th and I just got d/c. Reconnected to find I can access NOTHING but the Iburst website. Big surprise. Usage 3.46GB/3GB, remaining = 0. I've had IBurst now for exactly a year, this will be my last month. Unless of course they f**** up again and bill me for next month. This is also only the 2nd time I've ever been over the cap.

In any case, here are some interesting facts about the current situation:
1. HTTP is DEAD (no proxy error, a connection is established, then "The document contains no data")
2. www.iburst.co.za works 100%
3. HTTPS works 100%
4. P2P works, be it slow. Hits 6KB/s, then drops to 1, then back to 6 etc etc.
5. Skype works, though you can't here jack most of the time
6. ICMP packets are left to do their thing
*Edit* 7. FTP is also dead */Edit*

Well, all I have left to say is "Good Luck" to the rest of you. In 10 days I drop IBurst and gain 3G. Hopefully that will bring me as much joy as IBurst did last year this time :/

Cheers

Latest stats
Uploaded: 1.66GB
Downloaded: 4.76GB
Combined Total: 6.42GB
[might have done more, havent dropped aconnection for the last 28hrs, since the bandwidth monitor is session based]

When running ARES as my P2P, I cant do anything but watch it runs at max 10KB multithreading.
When I disable Ares, everything works fine, both HTTPS and FTP.
Running it on XP SP2

Disconnect Modem, leave it un powered for like 10-20 Minutes then reconnect it, and make sure you didn't get the same ip as before, as that seems to be the problem.

Cheers,
Jason

hehee yeah had the same thing yesterday... but a quick fone call to helpdesk sorted it out. got a free gig, and now i just gotta waste it quickly :P

Update

D/C and R/C multiple times. It didn't solve the problem. However, when I awoke this morning everything was working. I'm now starting to wonder if this wasn't a problem with that stupid transparent proxy (as everything that didn't work was routed through the proxy).

In any case, mic_y, make sure they don't charge you for that free gig at the end of the month. Others have had that problem before.

Cheers

I have experienced the "death by cap" twice so far this month and once last month. They sent out ppl to my house twice to test my signal and take readings. They seem to agree with me now that it's not a signal problem in my case and are looking into the issue. I will keep you guy's up to date.

We know they keep track of a list of abusers (site hack) and ppl have said only these ppl(who go over cap by x amount or y amount over z days) get "death by cap". I don't think they are sorting out the "problem".

Although the above is just personal opinion I have no personal experience on the matter... been capped once and when over by one gig.

I don't believe that to be true. From my own experiences with the "death by cap" and not just that but also ppl who have rarely gone over their cap also experienced this "death by cap" issue.

heeh, yeah I know about the whole thing. First thing I did when they graciously "offered" a free gig was ask for an email confirming the fact that it wouldnt be charged. Only after recieving the email did I ask them to go ahead with the allocation... And last month, without the email they still didnt charge me.

The problem appears to be when you download say, more than 500M at a time near the end of your cap. Which is naturally what I do as I try to queue up one or two important .ISO's at the end of the month.

On the next morning (last day), I expect to be capped and am fine with a slow connection for 1 day. However, due to the previous night's "abuse" I get cap of death which requires a call to Green to fix. Every time.........

I dont do any large downloads with the meesly 3GB cap iburst gives us, and I also have experience this problem. Iburst will duck and dive the issue, but when you hit your cap. You are cut off basically from the internet. Only thing that worked on my side was ICMP and Skype.

WBS will most likely lie about the situation, but I know a large amount of friends who have experienced this SAME problem. WBS are as siff and deceptive as telkom in my eyes.

Same here...

I've had the death by cap for a while now. Its like clockwork on my side - go over my cap- DEAD - buy bandwidth - WORKING. And I dont even need to disconnect.

However, I do not agree with iBurst doing this on purpose. iBurst have been nothing but VERY HELPFUL with this matter. They investigate on weekends for me, theyve listened to suggestions I've made too.

If anything I think this is just as frustrating for them than for us. Hopefuly a solution can be found soon. But they are working on it & giving it attention, I can vouch for that personally.

I have been capped now for about a week on a 1gb account, i can still browse and everything fine, maybe if i open 2 or 3 pages at once it has a mini heart attack and I have to wait for the pages to load but only 1 page open its almost the same as when I browse while uncapped, as for downloading I managed to get some of my downloads to run +100kb/s and torrents are going between 0-15kb/s...As for usage, that is one of the pages that take me forever to load but I'm guessing it something like dn = 9gb and up = 3gb:D

Someone do a test?

Can someone who is experiencing ongoing death by cap, tell me whether they are using an external antenna?

I dont know if its just chance, but with an external antenna I average speeds of about 500-600kbps on international bandwidth test sites.

However, I get death by cap immediately when over my cap. So recently i removed the external antenna - i unplugged it without restarting the UTD and let it work off its own aerial

Obviously signal strength dropped, and I can only get about 120-200kbps on bandwidth tests - BUT my death by cap has not come back since.

Very odd indeed....

PS - If i put external antenna back it works for a bit, and then i get death by cap....

I left a few downloads to complete during the night(going over my limit). This morning I couldnt open any webpages. Mirc & messenger was still connected though. I reconnected only for the problem to return....only after several hours and many reconnections did the problem fix itself it seems.

I cancelled my subscription June last year because of this cap of doom rubbish... are you guys telling me that wbs has still not fixed this problem...as far as i'm concerned wbs don't want to sort out the problem, as it's much easier for them to controll their subscribers and make a profit by handing out a "free" gig when someone goes over their cap than by fulfilling their contract by making sure that users can still download at 64kbps once their cap has been reached.
So of course they will be accommodating, it makes more sense to have someone happy while screwing them over than having them pissed off.

Hi Potenc,

Are you still experiencing problems connecting?
