New 2020 Citroen C4 Cactus to feature electric powertrain

Battery-powered Citroen C4 Cactus will be the first EV to market in the brand's electrification push

Further details of the new C4 Cactus are thin on the ground, but we know it will usher in a new design language with inspiration from the Cxperience concept of 2016. It will also feature further developments of Citroen’s Advanced Comfort strategy, with more comfortable seats and better refinement. We can expect to see a familiar range of Puretech petrol and BlueHDI diesel engines, too.

Prior to that car’s launch, in 2019 Citroen will show two new concept cars, the first of which will debut at the Geneva motor show as the centrepiece of its centenary celebrations. Belloni describes it as being “as important to Citroen as the 2CV was” and showcasing a “revolution” for the brand.

The concept will be small city-focused and previews a “very affordable” production car. It will also be fully electric, and showcases what Belloni describes as a “new mobility system”.

“It will keep the spirit of the 2CV, but instead of being a car for rural people it will be for city dwellers” Belloni continued. During a press conference Citroen revealed a detail image of the concept (above) showing what looks like a pull chord instead of a door handle.

In April, Citroen will showcase its take on what a driverless car future could look like with another concept at the Shanghai motor show. It’s not known yet if that will be electric, or based on a production car.

Citroën C4 Cactus: Dead

It is with great regret and sorrow that I bring you this particular bit of news on a Monday morning. Believe me, I wish it weren’t the case, but it is: The Citroën C4 Cactus is dead after this generation. Pardon me while I go and scream until my lungs give out.

Xavier Peugeot, Citroën’s product boss, confirmed the news to Top Gear. “Our next C-segment car to come will replace the C4 Cactus,” he said. “This will be the end of the Cactus. For the name, I don’t know yet, but for the car, yes.”

This to me means that the funky-looking compact crossover, the one with the bubbles on the sides, the only one I’ve ever truly liked, is departing us. The name, however, might stick around, but it’s not clear what will wear it next. I just hope it doesn’t go in the way of the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

The Cactus was launched in 2014 to the delight of American weirdos everywhere, who were immediately drawn to its styling and “Airbump” body panels. For the 2018 model year, the car went through a mild facelift and got new hydraulic shock absorbers. Neat.

Citroen C4 Cactus replacement spotted for the first time

All-new C-segment model will be unveiled later this year, with petrol, diesel and electric variants

Citroën will replace the now-discontinued C4 and ageing C4 Cactus with an all-new C-segment crossover, and the first spy shots of the new model have now emerged.

Tipped to be revealed in the latter part of this year before going on sale at the start of 2021, the newly developed model will sit on the PSA Group’s CMP architecture, allowing it to be the first in its class to offer petrol, diesel and battery electric powertrain options. Former Citroën CEO Linda Jackson confirmed this last year.

The new images offer our first look at the new car, which moves towards the now-fashionable coupé-SUV bodystyle by way of a distinctly sloping roofline and a raised tailgate. However, clear Citroën design cues remain in the front end, particularly the low-mounted headlight layout, and a clamshell bonnet features.

Citroen C4 Cactus replacement caught testing in new shots

All-new C-segment model still expected to be unveiled later this year, with petrol, diesel and electric variants

Citroën intends to replace the ageing C4 Cactus and now-dead C4 hatchback with a new C-segment crossover, and new spy photos give us our closest look yet.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic engineers in Germany are hard at work testing the new model, which could use the Aircross tag to bring the model into line with Citroën's latest SUVs. The prototype is being tested alongside a Vauxhall Grandland X, allowing us to see that the new model features a lower roofline and looks to be narrower.
