My interest is more in then can it still be classified as craft beer?
Our only local malting company is closing it's doors now, yes. However, they were never really the epitome of quality malt to begin with, so I'm not sure if it'll impact us THAT much. To be even more frank, the cheapest malt I could find the other day was imported from Belgium. And it was quite cheap. With this, I wonder how the craft beer industry is going to shape:

EXCLUSIVE: Lockdown blow to craft beer industry
South Africa’s only malting company to offer a variety of specialty malts to beer brewers has been forced to closewww.foodformzansi.co.za
As it is, it's pretty difficult to get malted barley.
It's also still made in the same factory, by the same people. But I hear what you're saying wrt ownership.
SAB maltsters are still going, but impossible to find their malt for sale. Our only local malting company is closing it's doors now, yes. Most "craft" beers haven't been craft for a long time. Devil's Peak, for example, I no longer consider craft. I think something is craft if they remain independent, and their brews are still made in-house by them. I know that cancels out a ton of breweries (who make use of contract brewing), but I don't really care. Craft should remain special.
PS: Not that there's anything wrong with big breweries. At all. Devil's Peak is nice, and I like their beers, for example.
Definition of a Craft Brewer –
- Independent – No partial ownership by a major international brewer with over 5% market share in SA.
- Traditional – At least 80% of production is beer derived from malted cereal grains.

From the Craft Brewers Association of South Africa, so that settles that.
I am not too fussed I still like castle lite, but do enjoy some craft beers every now and then.
Yeah I don't think they sell to the public, really. It's more of an in-house thing, since they malt for themselves but also still import as well. It's a nightmare for locals, but eh.
Ah, so I wasn't TOO far off. I agree, I don't mind Castle Lite even, but I do like to assign the correct labels to things. For example, don't sell me a chunk of donkey and tell me it's prime steak. Rather tell me it's donkey. I'll still eat it, but at least then I'll know what I eat.

That is quite cheap, yeah. My last base malt price I paid was R19,55 vir Vienna and R15,59 for pale malt. Both bulk bags, yeah, but from Chateau malting in Belgium. Really not bad, specially during lockdown. I won't be buying malt in any other way than bulk in the future. Both Brewcraft and Brewmart used to sell it. Was very cheap. The last time I bought at Brewcraft, it was R18/kg (non-bulk).

Bevplus also out of stock on SAB malt, and their price is (was) R30/kgI bought my first 50Kg bag direct from them and collected in Caledon when i passed through there back in 2013 when I moved from kit brewing to AG.
Im sure there's nothing wrong in trying again ? Can't remember what i paid back then and the only reason i actually did it, was because you couldn't find bulk of anything back then from anyone, but these days it's easier to just get it from a LHBS ... getting it from BevPlus works out to R11,92 per KG
