The Craft Beer Thread

Capital Craft for lunch!

Haven't had any decent craft in a while

So the report, went in with my analytical snob hat on, these are my personal SUBJECTIVE opinions:

Devils Peak Juicy Lucy: wish there was more depth beyond using just Southern Passion
Erdinger Weiss: it's Weiss, don't like Weiss
Fokof Lager: Devils Peak contract lager brew, tastes like every Devils Peak contract lager brew, too much banana ester
Friars Habit California Common: solid example, fairly bland style so can't get too crazy but executed well
Friars Habit Irish Red: great colour, nice coffee toast on the end
Hazeldean Pilsner: good pilsner, no faults, well brewed
Mad Giant IPA: decent but nothing exciting, well executed
Mohope Premium Lager: DMS bomb, may as well have licked a stick of butter
Palm Belgian Amber: Belgian, not a fan of Belgian yeast flavours
Darling Imperial IPA: oxidised crystal malts as in all Darling Beers, metallic flavour wipes out any hop characteristics
Leffe Blonde: Belgian blonde, not a fan of Belgian beers
That Brewing APA: solid, sessionable
Agars Tomahawk IPA: too much cascade, needs more balance with another hop
400 Brewing Hydra Amber Ale: served too cold, I know the brewer is on here so don't shout at them it was kak cold here today, fridge just wasn't adjusted, solid beer
Cape Town Brewing Nitro Stout: nitro head was great once I managed to get it open, tab failed, also too cold but a great example of a dry Irish

Ribs were awesome.

What does oxidised crystal malt taste like? And how does it oxidize?

Sounds like a pretty terrible experience overall

Personal preference is a wonderful thing! Just not a fan of those flavour profiles for some reason.

What does oxidised crystal malt taste like? And how does it oxidize?

Metallic and sugar caramel. Oxidation comes from letting air in while packaging usually, Darling had always suffered from this. Not sure if they have a bad process or they just use a higher % of crystal that highlights it.

Nah was just being fussy, went specifically for analytical tasting.

Seeing as there's no regular beer thread:

If you guys are in the Limpopo/Magoebaskloof area pop into Zwakala - awesome beer, their lager is some of the best I tasted. Also the food is fantastic!

Always do what you can to support beer tourism and great local breweries!
