Ok - so sucktech SMTP server was down for 24 hours (8 - 9 March)

Forget this is an ISP. In seven years at my previous ISP I never once experienced not being able to send mail. Hello Suckteck does the word redundancy mean anything too you !!!

No notifications to users - had to go and look at their friggin bulletin board (which was next to useless anyway) when clients start complaining .

And worse - the email I sent regulary every hour since yesterday lunchtime appears to have disappeared into thin air !! Straight to Sucktech's trash bin I guess.
*5^%^%$ them !!!

And then this off their bulletin board:
"Sentech has committed in previous communiqué with it’s customers that they would constantly implement changes to it’s existing MyWireless services to improve the overall quality thereof. To this end Sentech is in the process of changing it’s bandwidth management platform to allow better sharing of it’s International bandwidth to all it’s users. Key to the changes will be the ability for customers to be able to utilise all spare bandwidth during the slow or off-peak periods. Tests are currently being conducted internally to ensure all variables are taken into consideration and further communication will follow prior to implementation. Sentech has also begun implementation of it’s next rollout phase of MyWireless high sites to extend it’s existing 60 base station coverage within Gauteng, Durban and Cape Town. The focus on this phase will be to consolidate coverage within the central metropolis of Gauteng initially, followed by extending the reach of MyWireless to other large cities nationally."

Now all of you have been told by the orcs that the reason you are only getting 4.7kbs is because your line is being shared by 20 other people (which was always a crap and incorrect reason anyway 'cause you even got this excuse at midnight - I tried it) have confirmation from Sucktechs own mouth what liars they were. For a year there bandwidth management solutions have been screwed - well actually we all knew that anyway.

For the last two days I haven't even been able to get my first 500kb at full speed either - max speed was 5.7K - what a stupid joke this all is.

Now I am really sorry for one of my friends who has to sell this **** and make a living out of it but :
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT
THE BANDWIDTH IS CRAP THE SUPPORT IS WORSE AND SENTECH LIES TO THEIR CUSTOMERS.

Before buying go and put a modem next to a 192kbs ADSL line - then tell the Sucktech reseller how sorry you are for him. WARNING DO NOT rely on the Sucktech's reseller modem. They have special accounts which have much higher speeds. YOU WILL NOT GET THE SPEEDS the speeds the reseller purports to demonstrate.

Sorry for the rant but I am finally tired of the stupid orcs and the constant lies we have been fed.

This is the third time in the last few months that smtp.sentechsa.com has "delayed" emails for many hours. I have taken to BCC'ing myself on every important email sent, just so that I can tell if my outgoing emails are getting through. Emails that I sent yesterday were delivered quickly. During the first few hours that the server was down on Tuesday, I sent six emails, which I also thought had disappeared for good, so I resent them all yesterday. I see two of the original emails sent on Tuesday have now been delivered, more than 40 hours after they were sent!!! Let's see if the other four also eventually arrive.

Methinx this problem actually lies elsewhere - it's too coincidental that the Webmail service also suffered from the same problem at the same time (and I doubt that they use Sucktech as a provider, though I may be wrong). e-Mail I sent on Tuesday was only delivered in the early hours of this morning...

They use the old infosat mail systems, same systems that drive mighty.co.za and ananzi.co.za, which were coincidentally down at the same time too.

I don't even use Sentech's mail systems. I treat Sentech as a "connection provider", and I pay R130 per month for my own domain, 100MB webspace, and heaps of mailboxes at Webafrica.co.za, so I use Webafrica's mail servers in the US for sending and receiving mail. Works for me.

Do yourself a favour and NEVER use an ISP's email address supplied to you.

It's simply the worst thing you can do for your business.

Register your own co.za domain (R200 for a year) and spend an extra R30 to R50 a month and have the peace of mind of getting a proper hosting company and your own domain name.

For R30+ you can get a hosting account with 5 email address locally at a very reliable hosting company. If you want the risk of using international email hosting, it'll be even cheaper.

I use Hetzner - I'm no way affiliated with them and they are not the cheapest, but they are damn good and the support is nothing short of excellent - you actually get to talk to people who know what they are doing.

I second and third the above sentiment, I only use my sentech email for comunicatiing my ticket updates with them. I have my own local domain hosted in the US for R20/month with unlimited email addresses (not that I need them) and great support if needed, which is very seldom.

Ditto.

If you are not worried about spam filters then

  • Run Own SMTP engine
  • send the mail,
  • shutdown the engine.

I miss nntp though ; whom can I buy nntp access from ?

Their smtp server was down again? Haha. What a joke - and this is what they published on moneyweb (http://www.moneyweb.co.za/business_today/424777.htm):

"Sentech's e-Mail service is the most advanced Internet messaging solution on the market today. The comprehensive, flexible solution enables corporations, educational institutions, and service providers to implement a variety of functionality, from email and calendaring, to instant messaging and application sharing, all from a single proven, reliable platform."

LOL thats exactly what I thought when I read the moneyweb article yesterday. Sentech has to be the biggest joke in South Africa.
