I kinda think it does exist! I saw an ad once form a well know manufacture "claiming" that its appliances can talk to each other using the electrical wiring in your house. How = eg. the kettle boils or micky stops & u get a message on your TV saying that the kettle boiled or something like that. All the apliances must be from the same make though. As for connecting an ethernet cable in ur aircon................ soon bro very soon.
And i think you can actually control everything from your pc using home automation, I think they have to come wire ur house for it. Soon everything will be wireless and u can just go buy a tv and program it from ur pc:D

Here Vodacom3g is the clear winner! He gave a most enlightening talk and video during the first myADSL conference about his house.

I am not too sure whether the video is still available in the archives? Well worth watching.

Looks really nice... but I would still prefer the house wired to a server, running XP or Vista ...

I would prefer it connected to something stable like a dedicated controller with a web interface. Its the right way to do it.

So you're at work, it's 16h30, you're about to leave for home. You decide, it's gonna take 30min to get home, just enough time for the coffee maker to blend up a strong cup of coffee, what do you do? You log on using dynamic dns, to your Windows server at home, instruct the coffee maker to start making coffee. I wonder if this can be done with a dedicated controller

Yes it can be done and is done. :p
My bro's in the industry and he's told me several stories about people phoning at like 10:00PM because their Windows-based automated home crashed when they tried to open the door. Result: they had to get the company my brother works for, to fix it. That included ripping out everything and replacing it with proper equipment. :p
