I had a deep vein clot in my left calf when I was 21 in 2004 and was only put on warfarin for a short time thereafter. In June this year I had another clot form above the calf and extending above my knee and again I was put in hospital for a week and injected with heparin twice daily to slow my clotting down and put on warfarin again.

I have a genetic blood disorder called Factor Five Leidon whereby my blood clots too easily and if I rest for too long a clot can form in my limbs. I will now be on warfarin for life and that involved regular blood tests in order to keep my INR level within the safe zone.

I wanted to find out if there are any other warfarin users on this site and anyone who has been diagnosed as a Factor Five Leidon?

My friend had this condition. Its quite dangerous.

Just remember warfarin takes a good couple of days before it can protect you so never break the treatment. Non-compliance might cost you your life with a pulmonary embolism.

You should also keep Clexane injections on you at all times should a clot arise you can quickly inject yourself and give yourself the time required to seek medical attention.

Also warfarin interacts with all kinds of medication its quite a pain drug to deal with. Make sure you read the package inserts to check. It interacts with so many drugs its next to impossible to remember all the interactions. So make sure you check you cannot afford to mise on GP visits even for simplest of things.

Never take medication from other people and check properly
