Marketing gimmick, manufacturer lies, etc. All creates a fake higher value among the masses who in turn pay more.

"LED TV" = LCD with LED back-lighting

"LCD TV" = LCD with CCFL back-lighting.

Are you saying there is NO performance difference between the lighting methods?
So to an end user, these sets are identical and the higher price is unjustified?

LED back-lighting tends to have worse colour accuracy due to its increased brightness, they're also subject to worse light bleed than CCFL LCD.

About the only benefit of LED back-lighting is if the TV's in a bright room.

Also depends which kind of LED back-lighting. I speak for LED edge-lighting, as we see in 99% of the "LEDs" in the shops. Not RGB or full array LED, that's different (and unaffordable for most).
 
So let me get this straight ...

The have super fantastic world best nothing-better plasma screens a cheap price - fully established in the market ...

They launch LCD at twice the price with horrible colours, angles, muddied and grey blacks .... but everyone buys them and they almost kill of plasma displays

They go a step further and launch LCD-LED at twice the price again, with even worse accuracy and just a totally mixed colour blob - and again everyone buys into it.

And it's all because of Game salesmen and commissions?

That's pretty magic if you ask me!

So you saying that even the Samsung Smart LED 3D TV's are actually LCD TV"S
 
No idea what you're on about. It's almost 2012, seems you're living in 2005. No idea where plasma comes into this. It was a general comparison between LED backlit LCD vs CCFL backlit LCD based on fact. Google it. Remember most people buy TVs from mass mart stores, not pro AV shops with dark rooms which match their home viewing conditions. LED-LCD's increased brightness often gives it the edge under bright shop lighting, where the majority of people are judging and often get duped.

I know the what the thread is about - and the previous poster is talking LED while you're giving disadvantages that I didn't know about. I've bought plasma, LCD and LED as I didn't know it was worse than everything ... and I'd hate to have mislead my parents.

So from you comment above - performance is plasma > LCD > LED ... yet pricing it totally reversed?

No, but I do agree the vendors are exercising some business opportunism with LED. I believe the migration to LED backlighting is being driven by cheaper/easier manufacturing, however currently the pricing doesn't indicate this.

That said, LED models are generally more higher end so its difficult to discern what part of the price difference is the added features/performance and what part is marketing opportunity.

Technically there are two things LEDs can do that LCDs (CCFL) can't, due to LEDs having much faster response times;

Dynamic dimming of the backlight based on the brightness of the scene being displayed. This results in better blacks during (mostly) dark scenes. Low to mid range models dim the whole screen together, while higher end models can independently dim areas of the screen (zones).

High speed flickering of the backlight to improve motion resolution. Since LCD panels have slow response times, during any image display cycle (Hz) part of the time pixels will be in transition between (brightness/colour) states. LED TVs turn off the backlight during the transition period to hide the transition (& resultant blur) from the viewer.

Yes. And now Samsung and many other companies have to pay a massive fine for price-fixing the high prices of LCD TVs.

Samsung, Sharp, others to pay R4.5 billion fine for price fixing

LCD makers Samsung, Sharp, Innolux Corp, Hitachi, HannStar Display Corp, Chungwha Picture Tubes and Epson Imaging Devices Corp will pay a total of $553 million (R4.5 billion) to settle accusations that the companies took part in a price fixing scheme to keep LCD prices high.

Follow the thread ... Started with OLED and someone asked about LED.

I read itsd bad - worse than LCD.

I bought a plasma in Nov 2007, LCD in Nov 2009 and LED in Jan 2011. I've been out of the TV lifestyle for a year and I'm curious what may have changed.

However - if you'd like to stay in your plasma bubble or not even attempt to learn anything, be my guest

What do you look for with audiophile speakers? Best representation of what the producer intended, yes?

LCD = Logitech. Many will swear by them and tell of how awesome they are. Of course, we know they're actually getting an inaccurate representation of sound that the producer intended. Like Logitech tends to be bass heavy, LCD tends to have washed out colours.

Plasma = Sennheiser. Mostly balanced sound with an equal amount on emphasis on highs mids and lows which represents what the producer intended the listener to hear more accurately. Reference sound, in other words.

A nice analogy for you.
