Anyone have any info on how soon we could expect fibre optic residential connections?
 
Yes you shouldn't expect it.

..but do expect fibre to the curb, which will allow 20-50Mbps over copper to your house. More than enough bw for HD IPTV and Internet.

Expect it in 5 years though, and then be aware that we are in africa, which means we work on africa time... so 10 years is more like it.
 
Hmm, sad news.

Was really hoping we were catching up with the rest of the world with the optic cable landing on Africa's east coast in June.:mad:
 
me, I'm guessing I will have a nice FTTH connection "sometime after 2010" :D

can anyone tell me more about this fibre to the curb? sorry don't want to sound like a complete n00b but i am :D

Companies like Dark Fibre Africa will lay the fibre to a local exchange or even to your kerb. They will then lease the fibre to all ISPs. The ISP will install a link to your house (or use the Local Loop - existing copper once LLU is complete).

But this will probably only happen in the densest of metropolitan residential areas, since the cost per mile ratio for Dark Fibre Africa has to be above a profitable margin. If it costs a million bucks to run fibre to a block, but it is only gonna make 100K out of those customers then it is not worth it.

BUT, the inevitable roll of progress will eventually bring some other form of cable to your house. Eventually. Wireless connections will help, but I see them always as backup or mobile solutions. Fixed Cable will still always be the most desirable way to connect.

Such fixed cable will eventually carry all your comms... TV, Internet, shopping, service delivery, media delivery, education, etc.
