The FIFA corruption thread

I think the Qatar one could change, it it's determined that it was rigged coupled with the human rights abuses...we can only hope.

the only way it will change is if UEFA nations withdraw their participation in the WC. Qatar proposed a summer WC in temperatures that aren't conducive to football matches and they still got it.

Now Qatar and FIFA want to move the WC to winter. This throws the entire euorpean fixture list ( domestic and international ) into disarray for 3 seasons. ( season before WC, World cup Season, and the Season after)

Its a complete and utter **** up.

Its a complete and utter **** up.

That it is.... Can you imagine them hosting the World Cup in Qatar if it proved that bribes where accepted, can you imagine the fallout with the sponsors?

Fifa’s spokesperson says world football’s governing body will respond to all requests for information, and draws attention to the attorney general’s line that “Fifa is the damaged party” in the World Cup investigation. Walter de Gregorio repeats that Fifa’s general secretary Jérôme Valcke and president Sepp Blatter are not involved.

“Fifa are suffering in these circumstances. It is a difficult moment for us.”

Oh woe, poor suffering FIFA.

De Gregorio says he cannot confirm how many serving executives have been arrested, and says there will be no re-vote for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. “The World Cups will be played in Russia and Qatar.”

Walter rows back a bit: "Russia and Qatar will be played, this is fact today. I can't go into speculation about what will happen tomorrow."

oh dear..

Any sponsor who still decides to be associated with the Qatar and Russia world cups need to seriously consider whether they want to be tainted with this.

Among those arrested..

Concacaf president Jeffrey Webb is head of Fifa's internal audit committee.

Webb was re-elected unopposed at last month’s Concacaf congress, attended by Blatter. Also at that event, the confederation’s vice-president Captain Horace Burrell was re-elected unopposed. It meant that Burrell, banned for six months in the 2011 bribery scandal, kept his committee roles, including chair of Concacaf’s finance committee; chair of the legal committee overseeing compliance and integrity; and vice‑chair of the security and fair play committee, “supervising the conduct of everyone involved in football within the Concacaf region”.

Sending the fox to watch the hen house...

Reading now that the Swiss are saying they raided FIFA's office as well. Bring it on!

Apparently FIFA's director of communication called this a "good thing" 'cos it shows FIFA is on the right track tackling corruption... Wasn't aware that the Swiss police and the U.S. Attorney General were part of FIFA.

It's a warning to parents everywhere... Don't drop you children on their heads. They grow up and say ridiculous things.

If there is corruption going on, I would bet our lot were involved. It would be interesting to see if Danny Jordaan has or had his fingers in the pie.

Who is not corrupt these days? Pastors, doctors, lawyers, executives, politicians, joe public... all scumbags!

A few newspapers have said that these investigations might turn out to be the best thing the US has ever done for the sport.

Seems that some of the U.S. charges against Jack Warner refer specifically to bribes he received from SA for the SA world cup

According to the FBI the sponsors are also involved in corruption with FIFA. Apparently they were buying off members so they can stay involved in the WC

Of course he did. It's how he proved himself worthy of a mayoral appointment

Officials from football's world governing body Fifa took bribes totalling hundreds of millions of dollars over more than 20 years to allocate tournaments and rig elections, US law enforcement officials say.

Prosecutors said they had discovered a dozen schemes, including one awarding the 2010 World Cup to South Africa.
Fourteen people are under indictment.

Fifa president Sepp Blatter is not among them. Fifa intends to go ahead with a planned election on Friday.

US Attorney General Loretta Lynch was giving details of the US investigation into football's governing body.

Seven of the 14 sports officials were arrested in Switzerland on Thursday morning.

They are accused of accepting bribes and kickbacks estimated at more than $150m (£97m) over a 24-year period.

"This really is the World Cup of fraud and today we are issuing Fifa a red card," said Richard Weber, from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Fifa executives "used their positions to solicit bribes," said Ms Lynch. "They did this over and over, year after year, tournament after tournament."

"They corrupted the business of worldwide soccer to serve their interests and to enrich themselves,"

One of those indicted, former Fifa vice-president Jack Warner, took $10 million in bribes from the South African government over the 2010 World Cup, the indictment alleged.

When details of the indictment first emerged, Mr Warner said he was innocent and said "the actions of Fifa no longer concern me".

The Swiss have also opened a separate investigation into the bidding process for the World Cup tournaments in 2018 in Russia and 2022 in Qatar.

Swiss police said they would question 10 Fifa executive committee members who participated in the votes that selected the two countries.

This is the "beginning, not the end, of the investigation", Acting US Attorney Kelly Currie said.

Fifa earlier said it welcomed the process and said the vote to elect its next president would go ahead on Friday.
