The FIFA corruption thread

I must admit I am quite amused by how much effort certain posters seem to be putting into this thread trying to make it seem like the most important thing about the whole FIFA thing is how Russia reacted to it.

I'm quite amused by your continued qq-ing.

The thing to remember who holds the most clout in world football is not FIFA. The world doesn't turn up to watch the world cup because it's a FIFA organised event, they are only interested in watching the best players in the world come together to play in one tournament. The best players almost exclusively play for european clubs, and within that, within half a dozen leagues. These are the clubs that pay their wages. Sure every player dreams of firing his home nation to international glory, but given the choice of playing regular in-season football for the best clubs or to play for your country in a tournament once every 4 years, club football wins every time.
More important is the vocal opposition that UEFA is giving to Sepp, because the champions league has become a more prestigious tournament than the world cup. Footballers aspire to play in this league because a spot there can be earned, whereas if you are from a traditionally weak footballing nation you will never really be able to achieve much at the world cup.

With that in mind, if UEFA decide to play hardball, or the top European clubs themselves or their federations decide to hold FIFA to ransom, they can. It may not be ethecially correct, but it's fighting fire with fire. They can break off and start their own tournament with any other nation that is willing to abandon FIFA. They make it extremely difficult for players to leave their clubs for international duty for FIFA sanctioned tournaments. Previously FIFA could punish them for such actions, but they wouldn't be able to if they are no longer recognised as the footballing body. Take the power away from FIFA. They do not need FIFA, FIFA need's them. If all the best players are not at the World Cup, nobody would care about it as much any more. Sure they may not be able to get everyone on board, but they don't need everyone, they just need enough.

I really hope it wouldn't come to such drastic action, but if that's what it takes to rid the sport of corruption then so be it. Prince Ali really must win this election and then put his money where his mouth is.

Interesting.... heads on on the names:

"We had nine assured votes and we had to try to convince Jack Warner, then FIFA vice-president and CONCACAF president, to vote for us. Jack bluntly told us that if we wanted his vote, we must bring Mandela to the Caribbean."

Khoza, together with then Safa president Molife Oliphant and Danny Jordaan, went straight to the Nelson Mandela Foundation to try to convince them to fly Mandela to the Caribbean. Mandela agreed but his doctor said this would never happen as Madiba was not in good health.

"However, we finally got the go-ahead when we arranged for a special flight, two doctors and a whole lot of medical equipment to accompany Mandela. But it was not to be when we were summoned by the government to Pretoria. Here, we were told that Mandela could not go to the Caribbean."

Dejected and with no other options, Khoza said that driving back to Johannesburg, he decided to defy government orders and call politician and businessman Tokyo Sexwale, his only hope. Sexwale agreed to Khoza's suggestion to enlist the support of Graça Machel - but failed to locate her.

The win

Eventually, it was finally arranged that Madiba visit the Caribbean and he arrived with much pomp and fanfare. South Africa had the vote of Jack Warner.

Then, when 10 FIFA committee members visited the country to attend Thabo Mbeki's election to his second term of office in Pretoria, they had the chance to see for themselves the country's impressive infrastructure.

As the day of the announcement of the winning bid to host the 2010 World Cup drew closer and not wanting to take a chance, the Bid Committee invited Madiba, FW de Klerk and Archbishop Desmond Tutu to accompany it to Zurich.

On that day, Blatter opened the envelope and announced that South Africa had won the bid, beating Morocco with 10 votes and Egypt with no votes.

Blatter has been re-elected.

seriously, wtf. how , just how!!!!!!!!!!!!! Corrupt mother****er is still in power.

By all accounts he has all his bases covered...so much so, not even the US could really get dirt on him, for now. Guess he knew , FIFA would be in the Justice Departments sights after the US lost in its bid to host World Cup 2022...

If he really is guilty, the Americans will get him. Yanks always get their man, sooner or later. The guys busted so far are lower hanging fruit, they'll spill the beans to get lower sentences or immunity, then they'll go after the next rung up the ladder of FIFA mischief. :)

FIFA President Blatter re-elected for a fifth term: “I take the responsibility to bring back FIFA where it should be”

Incumbent FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter was re-elected for a fifth term of office by the 65th FIFA Congress held in Zurich today. After the first ballot (206 valid votes, 133 for Joseph S. Blatter, 73 for HRH Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein), HRH Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein addressed the Congress to announce that he was “withdrawing from the race”. At the beginning of the proceedings, the Congress had confirmed that all 209 FIFA member associations were entitled to vote.

After his re-election, Joseph S. Blatter stated: “First, I want to congratulate HRH Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein. He obtained a very good result. Then, I want to thank you for the trust and confidence. I take the responsibility to bring back FIFA where it should be. And I promise you: at the end of my term, I will give FIFA in a very strong position. Let’s go FIFA!”.

He continued by saying:“We need more respect for the Oceanian confederation. And although I agree that we don’t touch the FIFA World Cup, we need more balance for the FIFA youth tournaments. We also need more women in the football institutions.”

In his address to the delegates in the morning, the FIFA President had stated: “Events of this week have cast a shadow on football and our Congress. But the guilty ones – if confirmed guilty – are individuals, it’s not the entire organisation! Now, we, all together, have to repair the damage. Immediately! I’m calling on you to put FIFA back on the right track. YOU are FIFA, and FIFA needs you.”

Following the intense mediation work led by FIFA President Blatter with the football and the highest political authorities in Israel and Palestine, the Congress approved the creation of a committee which, under FIFA regulations, will oversee different matters affecting the development of football in Palestine. This includes the movement of Palestinian and foreign players and officials within, in and out of the Palestinian territories. The decision was followed by a handshake between the presidents of both associations, Jibril Al Rajoub and Ofer Eini. Shortly before this decision, the Palestinian FA had withdrawn its proposal to suspend the Israeli FA.

FIFA President Blatter welcomed the Congress vote: “This is a landmark step that once again shows the power of football to promote peace and understanding. I congratulate both member associations. FIFA will closely monitor the next steps to ensure the smooth implementation of the agreement for the good of football development in the region.”

After the Congress had been updated on the latest activities led by world football’s governing body to fight racism and discrimination, the FIFA President reiterated: “The 2013 Congress voted for disciplinary sanctions which include deduction of points, relegation or expulsion of a team. I’m convinced that when the disciplinary bodies of the football institutions around the world start to impose such sanctions, that will have a major impact on the way to eradicating such a plague from the game.”

The delegates were updated about the implementation of the Handshake for Peace campaign, which now forms part of the match protocol at all FIFA competitions, with team captains and referees meeting to officially shake hands as a symbol of respect and solidarity before and after the match, thus setting a strong example of friendship and peace.

The Congress also received updates on FIFA’s work on the issue of third-party ownership, as well as on its football development activities – FIFA’s primary mission – and on its initiatives to promote women’s football, just a week ahead of the kick-off of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2015™ in Canada with, for the first time ever, a total of 24 participating teams.

FIFA’s activities in the field of medicine – prevention as well as health promotion, in particular – were also highlighted, and this after FIFA had organised its third Medical Conference for all member associations earlier this week.

In his capacity as the independent chairman of the Audit and Compliance Committee, Domenico Scala provided an update on the significant changes in the compliance processes established as part of the good governance process. “FIFA has implemented a compliance system, which is suitable to identify material non-compliance with its statutes and regulations (…). We also need to ensure that governance doesn’t stop at the top of the football pyramid. We all need to drive and support the implementation of transparent and accountable structures, processes and instruments at confederation and national levels,” said Domenico Scala.

The Congress approved the consolidated financial statements for 2014 and for the 2011-2014 four-year period as well as the 2016 budget. Furthermore, upon the recommendation of the FIFA Audit and Compliance Committee, it appointed KPMG as FIFA’s auditors for the 2015-2018 cycle.

The new FIFA vice-presidents and Executive Committee members were officially installed by the Congress. Furthermore, the mandates of Moya Dodd and Sonia Bien-Aime as co-opted female members of the Executive Committee were extended for a further term of one year.

The following candidates were elected for the remainder of term of office onto the respective judicial body:

• Dr Cornel Borbély (Switzerland): chairman of the investigatory chamber of the Ethics Committee

• Mr Jacques Lambert (France): member of the investigatory chamber of the Ethics Committee

• Mr Cristian Varela (Chile): member of the Disciplinary Committee

• Mr Mahmoud Hammami (Tunisia): member of the Disciplinary Committee

A report was made on the preparations for the FIFA World Football Museum, which will open in Zurich next year.

The next editions of the FIFA Congress will take place in Mexico City (12 and 13 May 2016) and Kuala Lumpur (10, 11 and 12 May 2017).

I would love to see the names of the SA parties. Thing is nothing will happen to them, they will not get extradited.

According to the Feds, Co-conspirator # 15 and # 16 were involved in both the 2006 and 2010 bids. We only had three folk in both of those committees... Danny Jordaan, Irvin Khoza and Tokyo Sexwale. Place your bets 'cos two of those three are guilty.

I'd like to see the response as well. Danny seems to be covered and Irvin's kinda family but JZ threw Tokyo under the bus at Mangaung.

If they are indicted they will not be able to travel to any country which has an extradition treaty with the US or the US itself, including perhaps overfly the US as the plane may be diverted to land. Their US assets may also be frozen including transactions in US dollars which have to go through US banks.
