2018 Ford Mustang Bullitt revealed

163mph, 475bhp Mustang special edition pays homage to film’s most famous Pony Car

Ford has revealed the latest iteration of its Mustang Bullitt; the 475bhp and a 420lb ft of special edition paying tribute to the famed film car on its 50th anniversary.

It’s the third time Ford has created a Bullitt edition Mustang - the first came in the Mustang’s fourth generation in 2001, and then again in 2008 for the fifth-generation Mustang, regarded as a reinvention of the model.

The Ford Mustang Bullitt, based on the 2018 version of the car due to reach Europe this spring, gets a special livery inspired by the classic 1968 Mustang in the McQueen epic, best known for its car chase scene. The Bullitt also gets a series of mechanical modifications to cement its status as the most special Mustang in the range.

Speed is up over the regular 5.0-litre Mustang’s 155mph top speed, at 168mph, thanks to the uprated power output - the standard car puts out 444bhp.

It’s marked out by Dark Highland Green paint (black is also available), with gunmetal finished 19in torque thrust aluminium wheels red painted brake calipers and black front grille. At the rear, the Bullitt false petrol cap shows the car’s significance.

On the inside, there are Recaro seats, the upholstery is finished with green stitching, there’s an 8-ball gearknob and the Bullitt Electronics Package, which adds sat-nav, a premium sound system, blind spot monitor and cross-traffic alert, as well as driver memory seats and mirrors.

The model was revealed tonight on the eve of the Detroit motor show at a special event, where it was driven onto the stage by Molly McQueen, granddaughter of Steve McQueen. The model driven on stage tonight will be auctioned off for charity.

Ford will launch the Bullitt in summer, at a price that's well short of the Mustang GT350. It's affordable, one of the reasons Steve McQueen chose the car for the film 50 years ago in October. Production will be a limited number but enough for keen markets like UK. Ford is not disclosing how many will be made, although it will be more than the GT350.

Production will be limited, but not so limited that would prevent it from leaving the US to export markets. To that end, an as yet unspecified number of Mustang Bullitts will come to UK from this summer.

Ford unveils new Mustang Bullitt with extra oomph

Ford has taken the wraps off its new Mustang Bullitt at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, celebrating the 50th anniversary of iconic Bullitt movie.

The new special-edition Bullitt boasts an upgraded version of the brand’s 5,0-litre V8, delivering “at least” 354 kW (up from the 343 kW produced by the latest Mustang GT, which has yet to arrive in South Africa) and 569 N.m.

The Mustang Bullitt is fitted with a manual transmission, and the gear shifter features a white “cue ball” knob as a nod to the original. An active valve performance exhaust system comes standard (complete with black exhaust tips), retuned to give the car what Ford calls a “signature burble”. The new model also gains an open-air induction system, along with the Shelby GT350 intake manifold with 87 mm throttle bodies and powertrain control module calibration.

Other standard equipment includes a heated leather steering wheel and a 12-inch digital instrument cluster with a unique Bullitt “welcome screen” that starts in green with an image of the car rather than the pony.

Paint colour choices are limited to “Shadow Black” and the “Dark Highland Green” (the latter as worn in the movie). Other nods to the original include chrome accents around the grille and front windows, classic “torque thrust” 19-inch alloys, red painted Brembo brakes and a black front grille. The leather-trimmed interior, meanwhile, features green accent stitching on the facia, door panels, centre console and seats.

“When making a Bullitt, there are certain things it absolutely must have,” said Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer. “It has to have the right attitude, it has to be unique in some way from a Mustang GT, and more than anything, it has to be bad ass.”

2018 Ford Mustang Bullitt confirmed for UK sales

Special edition Mustang pays homage to film’s most famous Pony Car. It's limited-run, boosted in power, and soon to be over here

Ford has confirmed that the 475bhp Mustang Bullitt will go on sale in the UK and Europe in 2018, ahead of the car’s appearance at the Geneva motor show.

First revealed at the Detroit motor show in January, this latest iteration of its Mustang Bullitt is the third to pay tribute to the car that appeared in the movie Bullitt on the famous film's 50th anniversary - the first came in the Mustang’s fourth generation in 2001, and then again in 2008 for the fifth-generation Mustang, regarded as a reinvention of the model.

Based on the 5.0-litre Mustang, the Bullitt gets 458bhp and 388lb ft - 14bhp more than the standard Mustang’s 444bhp, but 17bhp down on the 475bhp US-spec car.

The US-spec car gets 35bhp more than the standard Mustang thanks to the use of an upgraded induction system, intake manifold, 87mm throttle bodies and powertrain control module calibration listed straight from the 526bhp Shelby GT350. The top speed is also increased for the US car over the regular 5.0-litre Mustang’s 155mph, to 168mph, thanks to the uprated power output.

The Bullitt is based on the 2018 version of the car due to reach Europe this spring and gets a special livery inspired by the classic 1968 Mustang used in the Steve McQueen epic, best known for its car chase scene. The Bullitt also gets a series of mechanical modifications to cement its status as the most special non-Shelby Mustang in the range.

It’s marked out by Dark Highland Green paint (black is also available), with gunmetal finished 19in torque thrust aluminium wheels, red painted brake calipers and a black front grille. At the rear, the Bullitt false petrol cap shows the car’s significance.

Inside, there are Recaro seats, the upholstery is finished with green stitching, an 8-ball gearknob and the Bullitt Electronics Package, which adds sat-nav, a premium sound system, blind spot monitor and cross-traffic alert, as well as driver memory seats and mirrors.

Production will be limited, but not so limited that would prevent it from leaving the US to export markets. To that end, an as yet unspecified number of right-hand drive Mustang Bullitts will come to UK from this summer.

Ford Mustang GT 5.0 V8 automatic 2018 review

Should I buy one?

As a characterful, sporting alternative to a more reserved £40k coupe, absolutely. The Mustang is a car that continues to inspire excitement and affection in almost equal measure and, bit-by-bit, its creases are being ironed out.

If you do, though, you should expect to be in some company. The Mustang has done a lot better in Europe than Ford expected it to, with some 30,000 of them having been sold so far in the current wave. In some ways, this facelift is really just a fleshing out and rationalisation of the model range intended to secure every possible sale. And so there’s a wider range of colours, wheel options and seat trims now, among other things.

While plenty of former manual champions inside Ford of Europe’s engineering team have apparently been won over to the two-pedal side by the car’s new ten-speed ‘box, though, we suspect this car’s still at its best in manual form. And if you’re wondering – and we can’t believe many genuine prospective Mustang owners actually are – all those overdrive ratios are somehow only worth one-half of one solitary mile-to-the-gallon to the car on the NEDC combined fuel economy cycle, compared with the six-speed manual version.

Would the difference be greater in the real world? Probably - but it depends how you drive. Surely life’s too short to worry about your Mustang’s ‘gas mileage’?

Ford Mustang GT California Special

America's favorite sports car gets even more style and technology for 2019 thanks to the revival of the legendary Ford Mustang GT California Special, new technology features including rev-matching on 5.0-liter manual-equipped models, the first-ever custom-tuned B&O Play premium audio system for Mustang and three new vintage-inspired colors and over-the-top stripes.

"No doubt, 2019 is an exciting year for Mustang enthusiasts, especially fans of our California Special and Bullitt models," said Corey Holter, Ford car group marketing manager. "This year further targets hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who want even more performance from BULLITT, while new technology including rev-matching on manual transmission equipped Mustang GTs and active valve performance exhaust on EcoBoost models means even more thrills."

California dreaming

When Mustang first hit the streets in 1964, owners clubs sprang up around the country, with many regional dealers creating their own personalized pony car designs. One - inspired by the 1967 Shelby GT notchback coupe prototype - came to be called the California Special.

That original version featured blacked-out grille, fog lamps and a side racing stripe that ended ahead of a new rear fender scoop. It wore a Shelby-inspired spoiler, custom tail lamps and twist-lock hood fasteners. Impressed, Ford put a limited number of California Special cars into production for 1968. Before long, the California Special had joined the ranks of Shelby, Boss and Mach 1 special-edition Mustangs.

The 2019 Ford Mustang GT California Special is a visual standout, featuring a trademark fading stripe that traces from the 5.0 side badge to the rear fender scoop. A signature Ebony Black and Race Red script California Special badge adorns the trunk lid. At the front, the car follows the blacked-out open grille and picks up the Mustang Performance Pack 1 splitter. The California Special wears unique five-spoke painted machined wheels.

Inside, driver and passengers will discover rich black Miko suede-trimmed seats with embossed GT/CS insignia and contrast red accent stitching, and custom embroidered GT/CS floor mats. Signature California Special script badging appears on the passenger-side dash panel.

"Few things are more satisfying than dropping the top on a California Special and taking a drive down the majestic Pacific Coast Highway," said Mark Conforzi, Ford designer. "This signature design takes its cues from the original California Special, while enhancing the personality of today's Mustang."

Rev-matching to level the field

Ford Mustang GT's retuned 5.0-liter V8 engine packs 460 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque and tops out at 155 mph. When that torque gets delivered to the pavement via 6-speed manual and available Performance Package, you better hold on, because that's where rev-matching gives Mustang drivers a leg - or a heel and a toe - up.

Advanced rev-matching helps smooth out shifts by predicting shifts and then quickly matching engine rpm - similar to the heel-and-toe methods the pros use. On downshifts, the engine rpm instantly kicks up to smooth out the transition between gears.

Sensational B&O Play audio

Like Ford Mustang, Bang & Olufsen is an innovator in both iconic design and heart-racing performance across its line of audio products. And now, for the first time, the B&O Play audio system comes to Mustang with a stunning 10-channel amplifier producing 1,000 watts across 12 high-performance speakers.

Customized to the acoustics of the interior, sound engineers tuned the B&O Play audio system to take both the static and dynamic states of Mustang into account to elevate the senses regardless of driving conditions.

Active valve performance exhaust now available on EcoBoost models

When the class-exclusive quad-tip fully variable active valve performance exhaust hit the streets for Mustang GT for 2018, critics and customers alike raved over the deep throaty sound of the 5.0-liter V8 engine. What took everyone by surprise was its driver-controlled, fully active exhaust mode and quiet start mode, also known as good neighbor mode.

Now, this Ford-patented fully variable active valve performance exhaust brings an aggressive snarl to 2019 Mustang EcoBoost models. This class-exclusive quad-tip exhaust system can be controlled by the drive mode system or via personalized MyMode settings through the 12-inch all-digital LCD instrument panel, as well as through the standard 4.2-inch cluster.

More personalization than ever; new colors

Mustang enthusiasts now have more opportunity to personalize their car than ever before, with exciting new vintage-inspired colors including Velocity Blue, Need for Green and the iconic Bullitt model's exclusive Dark Highland Green.

"These intense new colors trace back to Mustang's classic colors of the late 1960s and early 1970s," said Holter. "While colors like Shadow Black and Magnetic Gray will still be popular for those who prefer to go stealth, these new colors pack a brighter, more vibrant punch for 2019."

Meet Ford’s throwback Mustang California Special…

Looking for a special, modern Ford Mustang GT that harks back to the original California Special of 1968? Well, Ford has just unveiled its new Mustang California Special and it certainly lays on the nostalgia. In addition, this special edition features a couple of updates that’ll enhance the driving experience.

Similar to the original, this model features a blacked-out grille (now with a Performance Pack 1 splitter), fog-lamps and a side racing stripe that fades as it approaches the rear fender scoop. Around back, there’s a signature black-and-red California Special badge, while the redesign is finished off by five-spoke alloy wheels.

Take a step inside and you’ll find a set of suede-trimmed seats with the GT/CS badge embossed in the headrests. This insignia is also found on the floor mats, while special “California Special” script badging appears on the passenger-side dash panel. For music lovers, there’s also a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system with a 10-channel amplifier producing 1 000 Watts.

While fitted with the burly 306 kW 5,0-litre V8 and a six-speed manual gearbox, the Mustang California Special introduces rev-matching technology to the GT range, facilitating smooth downshifting.

Those who buy the 2,3-litre EcoBoost model can opt for a quad-tip fully variable active valve performance exhaust system to give the four-cylinder engine a more muscular sound at the touch of a button.

Ford Mustang GT 5.0 V8 2018 review

Should I buy one?

With prices starting just north of £40,000, the Ford Mustang GT 5.0 is practically in a class of its own. After all, what other V8-powered sports coupes can you buy new for that sort of money? Not many, if any.

A BMW M2 might offer keener handling, a more desirable badge and a more luxurious, upmarket interior, but that turbocharged six-cylinder engine is never going to be as characterful or spine-tingling as the ’Stang’s old-school V8.

Yes, it’s a bit of a dinosaur, and is by no means the sharpest tool in the shed; but It’s got the looks, the straight-line performance and a soundtrack that’s fast becoming a rarity in an industry fixated on turbocharging and downsizing. If you can stomach the 22.8mpg fuel consumption, it’s unlikely you’ll find the Mustang a disappointment.

Ford Mustang 2.3 Ecoboost automatic 2018 review

Should I buy one?

There are two main advantages of opting for the Ecoboost over the V8. For one, prices for the 10-speed Fastback model start at £37,595 as opposed to £43,095 for the comparable V8. Secondly, with a claimed combined economy figure of 30.7mpg, it drinks less fuel - if only to the tune of 7.4mpg. And that’s not really a huge amount, is it?

Don’t get us wrong, the Mustang Ecoboost certainly isn’t a bad car in isolation. It’s reasonably quick, looks great and offers handling that’s keen enough to enjoy on a winding road. But considering the sheer amount of extra character you get with the V8, if it were our money, that’d be the one we’d go for every day of the week.

HERE’S HOW MANY MUSTANG UNITS FORD HAS SOLD IN SA…

Ford says that the Mustang was the best-selling “sports coupé” in the world in 2017, with the Blue Oval brand registering a total of 125 809 units around the globe for the year. But perhaps more interesting to us is exactly how many examples of the ‘Stang have found homes here in South Africa.

Well, according to the Ford Motor Company of SA, some 1 929 units of the Mustang have been sold since local introduction of the model in late 2015 (seemingly including the 171 units sold in the first quarter of 2018).

And in 2017 alone? Well, according to our maths, 898 examples of the Mustang were sold in South Africa last year, representing a monthly average of about 75 units. The Mustang’s best month in 2017 was January (128 units) followed by August (101 units).

Of course, the pre-facelift Mustang is still sold here in SA, and unfortunately Ford SA says it is unable to provide us with timing for the local introduction of the updated version, even though some export markets are now starting to receive the refreshed version.

“Demand for Mustang continues to be very strong, especially overseas, where until recently people couldn’t get their hands on one,” said Erich Merkle, Ford sales analyst.

“Even more encouraging is that the updated 2018 Mustang is just now getting rolled out to export markets.”

Ford reported that 81 866 of the nearly 126 000 registrations took place in the United States, meaning that just over one third of all Mustang sales in 2017 came from export markets. The most popular configuration worldwide, according to Ford, is the Mustang GT with its 5,0-litre V8…

After trying to get any information about the estimated launch date - I was finally informed today that as per their Dealer Conference, they will not bring down the 2018 model until 2019 as they have overstocked on the old model - They bought out all the remaining stock at other markets that sell the RHD version of the Mustang and basically are going to shaft everyone in SA as they try to make a huge profit out of selling us a now defunct model...

Does anyone have any leads of importing vehicles from Austrailia?

Honestly, the way Ford SA keeps shafting SA buyers on the Mustang has long ago convinced me never to buy anything with their mark on it. Current ride is paid off end of the year, and one thing I know for certain is that Ford isn't even in the running for whatever replaces it.

Ford Mustang GT 2018 UK review

Should I buy one?

Well, why not? If you’re already considering a ’Stang and like the cosmetic changes, this facelift is all good news. The active exhaust in particular now gives the car a blaring, saw-toothed aural signature to match the muscle of the engine and the beefcake coachwork. It feels as though the Mk6 Mustang has grown into its skin.

If you’re really quite seriously considering a Mustang, you’re also unlikely to mind that dynamically it’s some way off, say, the BMW 440i M Sport. The Ford’s footprint may no longer dwarf those of its rivals, but it still feels a portly device, and that's a sensation that never leaves you. The Mustang can, however, prove surprisingly sharp on the right road, and so consigning it solely to ‘cruiser’ status would be an injustice.

There’s also the price. It’s a shade over £46,000, which, next to the £60,000 BMW M4, looks good value for a car of such character and no small amount of performance.
