Ford has confirmed that its hardcore Mustang GTD makes 804bhp and hits 202mph

And in doing so, the GTD (not a diesel) becomes Ford’s most powerful production car ever

It’s official folks: the Mustang GTD’s dry-sumped 5.2-litre supercharged V8 will send 804bhp and 664lb ft of torque to its rear wheels, making it not just the fastest production Mustang yet, but Ford’s most powerful car ever. That engine will also redline at 7,650rpm en route to a top speed of 202mph. Impressive.

The straight-line stats alone make this a very serious car, and that’s before you factor in the tricked-out suspension, carbon ceramic stoppers and semi-active dampers. Ford has pulled out all the stops for this thing to achieve one goal: a sub-seven-minute Nürburgring lap time.

For perspective, the current-generation 911 GT3 RS - perhaps the strictest, most no-compromise track-focused machine on the planet right now - can circle the Green Hell in 6m 49.3s. So, while Ford’s anoraks are adamant their car will break seven minutes, the real target will be to see just how close it’ll get to the RS.

And should it do so, we reckon the list of 7,500 U.S. residents who applied for one may swell even further… despite Ford only planning to build 1,000 GTDs. And since this is being labelled as an actual ‘supercar’, its £245k ($325k) price tag seems fitting too.

 
2025 Ford Mustang Price Locked in For SA

The 2025 Ford Mustang will be hitting South African roads from October 2024. Here’s the pricing, plus some early specification details.

The all-new 2025 Ford Mustang will be touching down in South Africa, with a price tag of R1 300 000 and the first customer cars will be delivered before the end of 2024. For reference, the outgoing model currently retails for R1 142 900 in September 2024.

This 7th-gen model, codenamed S650, will be offered with just one single derivative initially, with a more potent Dark Horse following later.

What’s a Mustang without a V8? Exactly and Ford South Africa has chosen to not bring in the 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and has stuck to the iconic V8. The 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine makes 328 kW and 540 Nm, which is higher than the predecessor’s 330 kW and 529 Nm. Again, power goes to the rear wheels via Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission.

We couldn’t find any claimed performance figures, but we estimate the 2025 Ford Mustang is good for a 0-100 kph in around 4.5 seconds.

By the time this model was officially rolling off the line in right-hooker guise – thus finally facilitating a market launch here in South Africa (as well as in several other right-hand-drive (RHD) markets around the world, of course), the Mustang had become a brand in its own right, such was its cachet and heritage.

 
Ford Mustang Dark Horse locked and loaded for SA - here’s how much it costs

Ford South Africa is preparing a muscle car double-whammy for local Mustang fans.

The seventh-generation Ford Mustang GT is set to reach the local market imminently, and the all-new Dark Horse version will follow hot on its heels.

As the most powerful normally aspirated Mustang to date, the Dark Horse will come with a price tag of R1.5 million, Ford SA has confirmed, making it exactly R200,000 more expensive than the regular GT.

The Dark Horse comes with a modified version of the Mustang’s 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine, producing 334kW, which is a 6kW increase over the GT, and 540Nm. Sadly it has been detuned for some markets, with the US version of the Dark Horse pounding out 372kW.
