Revving the roar: New Ford Mustang GT is a classic for a modern age

On the day that America had a new, let’s just say, more conservative President-Elect, we slipped in behind the wheel of one of the most iconic US cars ever built.

Not his Orange Highness’s most ardent fan and owner of the all-electric Tesla, but a good old fashioned naturally aspirated V8 Ford Mustang GT.

While Elon Musk and a number of other manufacturers continue to espouse the virtues of electric as the future, Ford, the Mustang Mach E notwithstanding, still thinks it good to cater to those of us that hanker for the sound of a good old fashioned muscle car.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that the Mustang is the most famous of them all, having had a starring role in films, documentaries and pop culture.

That thing is mint, I want it.

40 profile tyres aren't too bad for ANC roads compared to some cars. Hope there'll be some demos around.

I suppose on the debit side is the sheer crapness of the dealer network from reading some of the Ford stories on here.

Ford Mustang Dark Horse rumbles into South Africa: pricing and specifications

Hot on the heels of the new-generation Ford Mustang GT arriving on local shores, the more sinister Dark Horse version has just landed too.

Sporting numerous modifications aimed at track day enthusiasts, the Dark Horse is priced at exactly R1.5 million, which is a R200,000 premium over the GT.

As the most powerful normally aspirated Mustang that Ford has ever produced, the Dark Horse comes with a modified version of the Mustang’s 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine, producing 334kW, which is a 6kW increase over the GT, and 540Nm. Unfortunately it has been detuned for our market as the US version thunders out 372kW.

The Dark Horse, which boasts specially modified piston connecting rods first introduced in the Shelby GT500, sends its power to the rear wheels via a 10-speed automatic gearbox.

Because it’s built for life at the track, the Dark Horse also sports a lightweight radiator with improved cooling capacity as well as NACA ducts to help cool the brakes, an auxiliary engine oil cooler and rear axle cooler.
