The new Mustang Dark Horse SC gets the wild supercharged V8 from the GTD

Ford won't confirm power figures just yet, but reckon on this son-of-GTD getting around 700bhp

‘Son-of-GTD’. Or maybe brother. That’s the shorthand, but the new Mustang Dark Horse SC confirms that Ford’s 911 GT3 RS-tilting monster Mustang was just the start. Who knew that the Blue Oval’s contemporary pony car could have this sort of bonkers bandwidth?

“To engineer Mustang Dark Horse SC, we tested alongside the Mustang GTD and GT4 at some of the most challenging tracks in the world, using those elite Mustangs as benchmarks,” Chief Programme Engineer Arie Groeneveld says. “The result benefits from every hard-won lesson we’ve learned at the very top of the performance ladder.”

That ladder stretches so far you could use it to clean the windows in a Manhattan skyscraper. Ford Racing, newly emboldened by its relationship with the Red Bull Formula One empire, has taken all the world-class components available to it and done a remix. The engine is the same 5.2-litre supercharged V8 you’ll find in the GTD. We’re talking 804bhp there, and Ford is keeping its powder dry for now on the SC’s power output. Pick a point equidistant between the Dark Horse’s 493bhp and the GTD and you’ll be in the SC ballpark, so let’s call it 700bhp. (Maybe more, if you remember the outgoing GT500, which had 750bhp – often more depending on which aftermarket tuner had its wicked way). Whatever it is, this is very much internally combusting horsepower, with a sound to match. TopGear.com had a preview at Ford’s Detroit HQ and needed a small lie-down afterwards.

“It’s a soundtrack that rival sports car makers have largely abandoned,” Ford says with some justification. This thing is L-O-U-D.

Ford Unveils Mustang Dark Horse SC

Ford Racing has whipped the wraps off its latest high-performance Mustang, the Dark Horse SC; a supercharged, track-focused Pony car with a racing pedigree.

Ford Racing has unveiled its latest high-performance Mustang, the Dark Horse SC. Created in collaboration with Fords GTD team, this model bridges the gap between the Mustang Dark Horse Performance Package and the Mustang GTD.

Based on the Mustang GTD – a supercharged model inspired by Ford’s Mustang GT3 racecar – and the Mustang Dark Horse that recently featured in CAR Magazine’s 2026 Performance Shootout, the SC incorporates numerous aerodynamic and structural upgrades. These include a new aluminium bonnet with carbon-fibre vents, a reworked front fascia and underbody venting to improve airflow, and a revised rear diffuser paired with rectangular quad exhaust tips. Mustang GTD-derived 3D-printed titanium trim pieces are used throughout the Dark Horse SC. The profile also receives a set of aggressive carbon-fibre side skirts.

Powering the SC is a supercharged 5.2-litre V8 producing 566 kW and 847 N.m, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The car features a Variable Traction Control system with five settings, along with an electronic stability control (ESC) that can be fully deactivated for more direct driver input.

Optional upgrades via the Track Pack include Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres, as well as a ducktail bootlid designed to improve the efficiency of the carbon-fibre rear wing. The SC’s handling package also adds carbon-fibre wheels, forged suspension links and a lightweight magnesium strut tower brace to reduce unsprung weight. These suspension changes work in conjunction with MagneRide adaptive dampers, along with revised spring rates and updated knuckles.

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC: a look at what we're missing

Ford Racing has unveiled the Mustang Dark Horse SC, the most extreme interpretation of the Dark Horse yet. Unfortunately for local enthusiasts, the supercharged V8 Pony Car has not been confirmed for South Africa yet.

Positioned between the standard Mustang Dark Horse and the exclusive GTD, the Dark Horse SC is the product of Ford Racing’s growing effort to align its road cars more closely with its global motorsport programme.

Development

The Dark Horse SC was engineered using lessons learned and data from the Mustang GT3 and GT4 race programmes, as well as technology developed for the GTD flagship. Ford says nearly every dynamic system was reworked, including the powertrain, suspension, braking, aerodynamics and cooling.

“Mustang Dark Horse SC draws directly on what we’ve learned at the very top of our performance ladder,” said Ford Racing global director Mark Rushbrook, reinforcing the link between the company’s racing and road-car operations.

Supercharged V8

At the heart of the Dark Horse SC is a supercharged version of Ford’s 5.2-litre V8, paired exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. While final output figures have not yet been published, Ford says there are meaningful gains over the naturally aspirated Dark Horse.

More important than the numbers, though, is the character. In an era of downsizing and electrification, Ford is leaning heavily into the appeal of a high-output, supercharged V8, positioning sound, throttle response and straight-line punch as core parts of the Dark Horse SC experience.

Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC sold for over R20 million at auction

A Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC has fetched north of R20 million for charity at a recent Barrett-Jackson auction.

Unveiled on 15 January 2026, a Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC – VIN 001 – recently passed the auction block; fetching a staggering $1.25 million. At the current Rand-Dollar exchange rate, the latter figure translates to R20 038 750.12. All proceeds will go to Breakthrough T1D, a non-profit organisation focused on research for new treatments for type 1 diabetes.

The Mustang Dark Horse SC sold at auction is specified with the Track Pack and Carbon Pack – the former including aerodynamic upgrades, such as a larger rear wing and ‘ducktail’ spoiler, the same Brembo carbon-ceramic discs as the Mustang GTD, and lightweight carbon-fibre wheels, to name but a few.

The Mustang Dark Horse DC ditches the standard Dark Horse’s 5.0-litre naturally aspirated V8 ‘Coyote’ engine in favour of a 5.2-litre supercharged V8 – the driving the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission as opposed to the 10-speed self-shifter (or six-speed manual that’s also available with US-spec models) coupled with the ‘Coyote’ unit. Ford has yet to announce how much power the Mustang Dark Horse SC produces. However, for context, it could surpass the 566 kW produced by the similar 5.2-litre ‘Predator’ unit employed by the Mustang GT500.

Ford hints at hardcore Mustang Dark Horse SC’s power output

Ford has hinted at how much power the recently-revealed Mustang Dark Horse SC’s 5.2-litre supercharged V8 produces.

The Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC made its global debut on 15 January 2026. However, when the Blue Oval brand whipped the wraps off the latest model in its Mustang lineup, it remained tight-lipped about how much power this model’s 5.2-litre supercharged V8 produces. However, at a recent auction, where the first example (VIN 001) of this hardcore Mustang was sold for over R20 million, the US automaker hinted at its power output; saying “well over” 522 kW.

Although the Mustang Dark Horse SC’s (seen here specified with the Track Pack) exact power output remains unconfirmed, this could suggest that it may produce as much power as the GT500, which employs a similar ‘Predator’ motor. The Mustang GT500 is endowed with 566 kW.
