FORD SA ASSEMBLES 500 000TH DURATORQ TDCI MILL IN PE

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa says it has assembled its 500 000th Duratorq TDCi turbodiesel engine at the Struandale engine plant in Port Elizabeth.

This milestone (the programme for assembly of this engine range started in 2011) takes the total volume of engines produced at the Port Elizabeth plant to 3,3 million units since it opened its doors in 1964.

Ford SA supplies fully assembled 2,2-litre four-cylinder and 3,2-litre five-cylinder Duratorq TDCi engines to its Silverton assembly plant for installation in the locally built Ranger and the Everest.

In addition, engines are exported to India and China to support these countries’ production of the Everest, along with five-cylinder units being shipped to North America for the Transit. Ford SA says a total of 34 engine derivatives are produced for the various vehicle applications.

The Struandale engine plant furthermore machines components for the Duratorq TDCi engines, including the cylinder head, block and crankshaft, which are used both for local engine assembly as well as for export to Ford engine plants in Argentina and Thailand. More than 1,3 million component sets have been produced since 2011.

“The Struandale engine plant already achieved its highest-ever volumes for component machining and engine assembly during 2017, and we expect to set new records again in 2018,” said Ockert Berry, vice president of operations, Ford Middle East and Africa.

“The R3-billion investment reaffirms Ford’s ongoing commitment to South Africa as a local manufacturer, exporter and key employer in the automotive sector, supporting a large number of direct jobs as well as indirect employment through our extensive supplier base.”

FORD EXPANDS RANGER FX4 LINE-UP, TWEAKS TRIM LEVEL…

Back in April, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa added a limited-edition Fx4 derivative to its burgeoning local Ranger line-up. Now the brand says the Fx4 treatment will be available “in limited quantities” on other Ranger derivatives, too.

While the original Fx4 variant was based exclusively on the 3,2-litre XLT double-cab 4×4 model, Ford SA says the styling package will now be offered on all XLT double-cab variants. That means you can have your Fx4 with either the 2,2-litre or 3,2-litre turbodiesel engine, in either manual or automatic.

As before, the Fx4 package includes black finishes for the radiator grille, foglamp bezels, side-mirrors, roof-rails, exterior door handles and the tailgate handle. The 17-inch alloys are likewise finished in black, with the side-steps, rear bumper and Fx4 tubular sports bar receiving the same treatment. A fitted bed-liner for the load-bay and obligatory “Fx4” decals complete the makeover.

Ford has yet to indicate pricing for each new Fx4 derivative, but it’s worth noting that the package previously added R15 000 to the total.

Interestingly, Ford SA has also announced that all Ranger XLT and Fx4 models will now be standard with front parking sensors, in addition to the already standard rear sensors and reversing camera.

Furthermore, the Ranger will now also be available with a spray-in bed-liner “direct from the factory” as an added-cost option. Ford says the liner (pictured below) is a Polyurea-based two-component material that provides “rugged durability and anti-slip protection” for the load-bay, adding that “minor and major repairs” to the spray-in liner – which is covered by the standard four-year/120 000 km warranty – can be performed at Ford dealerships.

Ford Ranger Gets Spec Upgrade for 2018

Ford has updated the specification on its popular Ranger double-cab bakkie for 2018. Herewith the details.

Ford South Africa has implemented a range of enhancements to its Ranger double-cab bakkie which is locally produced at Ford's Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria.

All Ranger XLT and Fx4 derivatives will now offer front park assist as standard which complements the existing rear park assist and rear-view camera. This is in addition to the SYNC3 infotainment system with navigation which is already offered on these derivatives.

The limited edition Ranger Fx4, which was previously only available on the Ranger 3.2 XLT double cab, has proven to be hugely popular on the local market and Ford is now offering the Fx4 treatment, in limited numbers, on all XLT double cabs, including the Ranger 2.2 and 3.2-litre derivatives in both automatic and manual guise.

The Ranger Fx4 wears special styling features such as black finishes on the grille, fog lamp bezels, side mirrors, roof rails and on the door and tailgate handles. The wheels on the Fx4 are 17-inch in size and finished in black, which is also applied to the side steps, rear bumper and the sports bar. A fitted bed liner is also standard.

A new spray-in bed liner is offered on the Ranger as an option.

The Ranger will also be available with a spray-in bed liner as an option. The bed liner is fully tested and approved according to Ford’s engineering specifications. It is a Polyurea-based 2-component material that offers extra durability and anti-slip protection for the load bed. The liner is also covered by Ford’s 4-year/120 000km warranty.

"The Ford Ranger has cemented its status as one of South Africa's best-selling vehicles overall and in the light commercial vehicle category, having topped the monthly vehicle sales charts on various occasions this year. The 2.2 TDCi Auto has been a great success for us, offering superb performance and economy matched to the convenience and ease-of-use of the refined six-speed automatic transmission. With the latest enhancements introduced for the 2018 model year, we are delighted to offer our customers even greater value for money, driving convenience and safety, as well as trend-setting style" says Tracey Delate, General Manager, Marketing, at FMCSA.

SA-built Ford Ranger bakkie spruced for 2018: Tech upgrades, limited-edition Fx4

• Specification upgrades for Ford Ranger
• Eye-catching Fx4 option on wider range
• Front Park Assist for XLT versions
• Optional spray-in bed liner

Ford South Africa has introduced enhancements for its Ranger bakkie, locally produced at its Silverton Assembly in Pretoria.

Front Park Assist is now fitted standard on all Ranger XLT and Fx4 derivatives, complement existing rear sensors with rear-view camera.

Limited edition Fx4

The limited-edition Fx4 derivative – previously only available on the Ranger 3.2 Double Cab XLT 4x4 – has proven popular among South African customers.

Tracey Delate, General Manager of marketing at Ford SA, said: "Based on strong customer feedback and demand, the Fx4 treatment is now available in limited quantities on all XLT Double Cab derivatives, including the 2.2 and 3.2-litre models, in both manual and automatic transmissions. This makes the unique and thoroughly distinctive Fx4 styling available to more of our Ranger customers."

The Ranger Fx4 incorporates a number of styling changes, including attractive black finishes for the radiator grille, foglights, side-mirrors, roof rails, as well as the door and tailgate handles.

The 17” alloy wheels are supplied in an eye-catching black finish, with the same treatment for the side steps, rear bumper and special Fx4 tubular sports bar located in the load bay which features a fitted bed liner. Unique Fx4 decals provide an additional distinguishing touch.

Spray-in bed liner

For the first time, the Ranger will also be available with a spray-in bed liner direct from the factory as an added-cost option. Ford said: "As a Genuine Ford Accessory Spray-in product, it is fully tested and approved according to Ford’s stringent engineering specifications, and has been used on the Ford F150 produced at the Kansas City Assembly Plant in the US since 2008.

"The liner is a Polyurea-based two-component material that provides rugged durability and anti-slip protection for the loadbed, and is more aesthetically pleasing than some aftermarket solutions currently available. For added convenience, minor and major repairs to the spray-in liner can be done at Ford dealerships."

The liner is covered by the Ranger’s standard four-year/120 000km warranty.

3 Reasons Why Ford Ranger Wildtrak is #CarsAwards Finalist

What makes the Ford Ranger 3.2 Wildtrak 4x4 Automatic a strong contender in the Leisure Double Cab Bakkie category of the 2017/18 Cars.co.za Consumer Awards – powered by WesBank? We investigate…

The Ranger Wildtrak is back to defend its title in the Leisure Double Cab category! Well equipped, sturdy and endowed with appealing square-jawed looks, the Ford Ranger continues to sell up a storm in South Africa. This model is powered by a muscular 5-cylinder engine and is claimed to offer class-leading passenger comfort. Will the Ranger Wildtrak retain its champion status in this category?

3 Reasons Why Ford Ranger is #CarsAwards Finalist

1. Powerful engine

Underneath that bulging bonnet lies a 5-cylinder, 3.2-litre turbodiesel engine that produces peak outputs of 147 kW and 470 Nm and propels the Ranger via a 6-speed automatic transmission. Although the Ranger Wildtrak labours under hard acceleration, once up to speed, it has no problem maintaining momentum and the motor is reasonably refined. Ford claims a combined cycle fuel economy rating of 9.0 L/100 km for this model and it’s also rated to tow 3 500 kg (braked trailer).

2. High levels of passenger comfort

A big advantage that the Ranger continues to hold over its competitors is passenger space. Courtesy of a long wheelbase and good packaging, the cabin is longer, affording rear passengers more space.

Leather-upholstered seats are standard on Wildtrak models (it even extends to the facia, with orange stitching) and there are a multitude of storage spaces around the cabin. Ford's Sync3 8-inch touchscreen interface now offers navigation and is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible. Other nice features included on this Ranger Wildtrak include adaptive cruise control, lane keeping aid and blind spot monitoring.

3. Capable and confident on all surfaces

The Wildtrak’s ride quality is surprisingly smooth and well-mannered on the road, irrespective of how much cargo/number of passengers it is transporting.

It’s superbly capable offroad and with loads of torque, it can surge through the thickest sand or clamber over terrain only suitable for mountain goats. An electronic rear differential ensures optimum traction in challenging terrain and possibly the best part of this Wildtrak is the ability for the driver to switch between 2H, 4H and 4L using a knob next to the transmission lever. The Wildtrak's capability is therefore easily accessible.

Ford and Mazda Australia have issued an urgent warning to 70,000 owners of Ranger and BT-50 utes built since July 2016 to not drive over long grass during the summer break after 24 cars caught fire or began to “smoulder”.

Grass clippings can get caught under the diesel particulate filter (DPF), which can get extremely hot and spark a fire.

The recall affects about 52,000 Ford Rangers built since July 2016 and 17,000 Mazda BT-50 utes built since 23 June 2016. Both vehicles are made on the same Thailand production line.

Added to the tally are about 7000 new Ford Rangers sitting in dealer stock and an as yet undisclosed number of BT-50s in Mazda showrooms.

Mazda says it has had 15 confirmed cases of vehicle fires. Ford says there have been “two confirmed cases of vehicles being written off” as a result of fire and “seven confirmed cases of smoke or fires which have resulted in minimal damage” since December 2016.

At first Ford thought the problem was isolated but it escalated its investigations after a “cluster” of Ranger fires in the middle of 2017.

Ford Ranger Fire Hazard.jpg

Despite the danger, Ford and Mazda have not issued a “stop delivery” notice on cars in stock.

Ford and Mazda say the recall fix will not be ready until the new year.

Ford has issued a bulletin in the meantime to warn owners of the danger and to avoid driving in conditions that can spark a fire.

A statement from Ford Australia says: “The recall is in relation to a risk of fire due to grass or vegetation accumulation near the DPF that produces very high temperatures during regeneration mode”.

The company added: “The DPF regeneration can radiate a considerable amount of heat which could create a fire risk if sufficient grass or vegetation accumulates in this area”.

Owners can take their car to a Ford or Mazda dealer to have them make sure the area around the DPF is clear of debris, or owners can check it themselves.

The DPF is located in the underbody area “adjacent to the exhaust system and transmission cross member”.

The Ford bulletin continues: “While the likelihood of this situation arising is low, Ford is taking precautionary action to help prevent this situation from occurring as customer safety is the company’s top priority. Customers will be contacted again as parts are available to address this concern.”

Ford says the Everest SUV, which shares much of its underpinnings with the Ranger and Mazda utes and is made in the same Thailand factory, is not affected.

A Ford Ranger burned this morning on the R546 road at Brendan Village turn off.

According to Mr Alf Byleveldt, one of the first people on the scene, the car was already burning when he arrived. The driver was able to get out of the car and escaped unharmed.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality firefighters were summoned, however when they arrived the car was already burned out.

The cause of the 'accident' is unknown.

Looking at these prices, as much as I love the Amarok, one would have to be silly to buy it over a Ranger.

And then you see this. Why is ford's R&D so bad, could they not have foreseen a problem like this? And this guy seem to have a special dislike for Ford, not without reason TBH.

The big problem is that Ford have been catching fire forever because of cost cutting. No other reason.

SA-bound new Ranger bakkie ready for Detroit

Could the future for Ford’s bakkie be more V6 engines?

Amidst the snow and chill of Lake Michigan, the North American International Auto Show, which opens on the 13th of January in Detroit, is a big deal for Ford. Headquartered in nearby Dearborn, a suburb of Detroit, Ford is never shy of producing a show-stopper for the event.

Traditionally, it’s either been a massive F-Series bakkie or enormous North-American market only SUV.

Occasionally a supercar, such as the Ford GT. But at the 2018 show, the vehicle which could attract the greatest interest, could be something completely unfamiliar to American showgoers, yet awfully familiar to South Africans: The Ranger.

'Compact truck'

American consumers are finally demanding smaller, nimbler, bakkies in the United States, and considering Ford builds one of the best in the business, Ranger should be the perfect ‘compact truck’ for the world’s most important bakkie market. Since its launch in 2011, the T6 Ranger has not been available in North America. This year, that all changes – which means markets such as South Africa, will become affected by the renewed ‘compact truck’ focus in America.

Despite American buyers having nothing to compare Ranger to, it would be foolish of Ford to launch T6 Ranger in such a crucial market, if it didn’t feature some new bits. Hence the presence of facelift Rangers being tested in the Southern Hemisphere, where both Ford’s Ranger engineering and production resources are.

Captured during validation testing Thailand, images reveal that the 2018 Ranger features a new hexagonal grille, with a ‘floating’ Ford roundel in the middle, frame by updated front LEDs and a reshaped front bumper. Around the back the taillights are all-new too. Suffice to say, this is close to exactly the bakkie which should be revealed soon in Detroit, and one which will become available globally in time.

The return of Ranger to the US market is great news for Ford, which should boost its dominance of that market’s bakkie segment, but what does it mean for us? American buyers are demanding, and they purchase in sufficient volumes to radically alter engineering aims and equipment trends. Diesel is not the bakkie fuel of choice, especially for what the Americans consider a ‘compact truck’, Stateside. This could influence the potential future engineering direction for Ranger engines.

Don’t expect the 2.2- or 3.2-litre turbodiesel engines to be available to American Ranger buyers. Instead, a combination of turbocharged 2.7- and 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost petrol engines will likely be the default options powering North American Rangers. Of specific interest here is the 2.7-litre engine, which is available in the monstrous F-150.

Boosting to 242kW/508Nm, it would be a very compelling rival to the V6 Amarok and X-Class 350 d double-cabs, mounted in the comparatively light Ranger body. Not as a madcap Ranger Raptor (we know this will be a dedicated 2-litre twin-turbo diesel powered bakkie), but perhaps as a high-speed on-road cruiser with effortless towing ability.

The T6 Ranger is finally coming home, to the market which appreciates and influences bakkie technology and trends more than any other. What the future for global Ranger markets such as Australia, Argentina, Thailand and South African will be as part of an Americanised ‘compact truck’ partnership is challenging to predict. But we suspect fewer diesel, and more petrol engines, could be the result.

I'm guessing those new headlights are from the Everest. Ford SA should have given XLT and Wildtrak these LED enabled lights long ago IMO, even moreso now that the Hilux has received LED DRL which look really good on it.

After many years the US is finally getting the "midsize" truck.

Ford Ranger [US]

Ford revealed the all-new 2019 Ford Ranger for North America, bringing midsize truck fans a new choice from America's truck sales leader - one that's engineered Built Ford Tough and packed with driver-assist technologies to make driving easier whether on- or off-road.

Production begins in 2018 at Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant as customer demand is growing for midsize trucks. U.S. sales are up 83 percent since 2014 as a new generation of midsize truck buyers seek more maneuverable, fuel-efficient pickups.

The 2019 Ford Ranger answers the call with an all-new midsize pickup featuring a new exterior design, chassis and powertrain developed specifically for North American truck customers. Powerful and strong, with a high-strength steel frame, Ranger is equipped with a proven 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine mated to the only 10-speed automatic transmission in the segment.

"Ranger has always held a special place in the hearts of truck fans," said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford executive vice president, Product Development and Purchasing. "The all-new Ranger is designed for today's midsize truck buyer, delivering even more utility, capability and technology for those who blend city living with more off-the-grid adventures on weekends."

Ford Ranger comes in entry-level XL, mid-level XLT and high-level Lariat trim series with available Chrome and Sport appearance and FX Off-Road packages, and in SuperCab or SuperCrew cab configurations.

Built Ford Tough

Built Ford Tough is engineered in Ranger's DNA - from its high-strength steel frame backbone to its frame-mounted steel front and rear bumpers. Ford engineers put Ranger through the same torture testing as the legendary F-150 goes through.

Even its design is tough. Ford Ranger's muscular body features a high beltline that emphasizes strength, while a raked grille and windshield provide an athletic appearance - designed to aid in aerodynamics and reduce wind noise. Short overhangs are functional off-road for clearing obstacles.

From the rear, the Ranger nameplate stamped in the tailgate conveys strength, and the tailgate itself is designed to handle people and cargo. A rugged steel bumper with an available integrated trailer hitch receiver helps make towing campers, ATVs or watercraft a breeze.

Inside, Ford Ranger blends comfort and functionality with room for up to five people, their gear and accessories. A center stack includes an 8-inch touch screen for the available SYNC 3 system, while the instrument cluster features dual LCD productivity screens for real-time vehicle, navigation and audio information.

Ranger's twin-power dome hood houses its 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine designed for efficiency and capability thanks to direct fuel injection, a twin-scroll turbocharger and 16-valve design. For added durability, the engine features a forged-steel crankshaft and connecting rods, and chain-driven dual overhead cams.

"Ranger's proven 2.3-liter EcoBoost provides a torque target on par with competing V6 engines, but with the efficiency of a four-cylinder," said Thai-Tang. "When you pair that with its 10-speed transmission, you've got one of the most versatile, powerful and efficient powertrains in the segment."

Ford Ranger added to US line-up as mid-size pick-up demand rockets

Nissan Navara rival enters Ford's domestic market a year after the facelifted version was launched in Britain

The Ford Ranger has been launched in the US to satisfy burgeoning demand in the mid-size pick-up truck market.

Announced at the Detroit motor show, the Nissan Navara and Volkswagen Amarok rival enters a class that has grown by 83% since 2014 in the US. In comparison, the segment grew in the UK by a mere 6% from 2016 to 2017.

No changes have been made to the Ranger's design, but it features a bespoke chassis set-up to cater to US tasted and uses Ford’s 2.3-litre Ecoboost petrol engine, as opposed to one of the diesel units offered in the UK.

The Ranger comes in three forms: regular, super or double cab. The latter adds an extra row of seats and has four doors.

“Ranger has always held a special place in the hearts of truck fans,” said Ford's boss of product development and purchasing, Hau Thai-Tang. “The new Ranger is designed for today’s mid-size truck buyer, delivering even more utility, capability and technology for those who blend city living with more off-the-grid adventures on weekends.”

Ford discontinued the Ranger in the North American market back in 2011.The market is home to Ford’s best-selling model, the larger F-150 pick-up. The latest Ranger was launched in the UK in 2012 and facelifted last year.
