WATCH | Ford shows new Ranger's versatile side with features 'wanted' by customers

Ford's all-new Ranger bakkie will debut in South Africa later in 2022.

The new Ranger is said to be more versatile than ever before.

Among the additions to the bakkie are rear load box access steps.

As we edge closer to the all-new Ford Ranger's local debut, the automaker has announced several highlights on its bakkie prospective customers can look forward to. Among these is the versatility the bakkie is endowed with, making it ideal for both work and play.

The next-generation Ranger will again be built at Ford's Silverton plant in Pretoria for local and export markets. Over the last year, Ford Global invested heavily in their South African operations, prepping the factories - both Silverton and the engine plant in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha) - for the new bakkie's production.

Ford is adamant that its next Ranger will speak to a broader audience than ever before and that it will boast innovative features - both inside and out.

Gary Boes, Enterprise Product Line Management director, Global Trucks, says: "Our intent was not to simply create a good bakkie. We wanted to deliver an exceptional one that people would want to own - one that customers around the world could trust to tackle anything."

2022 Ranger promises versatility, retractable cup holders and a step

With the 2022 Ranger just about on its way to local showrooms , Ford has very kindly sent out a bit of a press-release detailing just how versatile the all-new SA-built workhorse really is.

Many of the innovative features throughout the new bakkie have came about as the result of feedback from customers around the world, features which are then rigorously tested in order to ensure that the 2022 Ranger is Built Ford Toughindeed.

Gary Boes, Enterprise Product Line Management director of Global Trucks said, “Our intent was not to simply create a good truck. We wanted to deliver an exceptional one that people would want to own – one that customers around the world could trust to tackle anything.”

Segmented DIY storage spaces can be created by sliding pieces of wood into slots moulded into the bedliner, just one example of the array of solutions designed to make securing cargo and fitting accessories as simple as can be.

There are sliding cleats that can be adjusted into nine positions in order to accommodate any size or shape cargo, as well as bed-mounted tie-downs and external tie-down rails. Interestingly, interviews with over 5 000 bakkie owners led to the new rear load box access step, optimised based on how the interface between them and their bakkies, as well as what they wanted from the vehicle destined to replace them.

The 2022 Ranger’s cabin features more storage, too – a smattering of cubby holes around the interior, as well as retractable cup holders and under-seat storage make for a more practical experience for occupants. Interestingly, the new Ranger has been pre-wired with auxiliary switches, making it easier to install accessories like driving lights and a winch, and a space has even been set aside under the bonnet for a second battery.

The easy-lift tailgate can be lowered with one hand and features innovative features such as clamp pockets which are concealed by spring-loaded caps in the tail gate and are designed to help secure timber or other project materials, and a ruler, built into the load bed to make measuring convenient and hassle free.

New Ford Ranger’s innovative loading and storage solutions detailed

Ford certainly spoke to its customers while designing the new Ranger. In fact, more than 5000 interviews were conducted in order to learn how customers used their bakkies and what they wanted from the next one, and the result is a far more versatile load area in the new Ford Ranger.

Not only is the cargo bin wider than before, but it is also packed with features and opportunities to transform that space into a total cargo management makerspace.

For example, owners of the new Ford Ranger can create segmented DIY storage spaces, both big and small, by sliding pieces of wood into slots moulded into the bedliner.
Furthermore, Ford has installed tie-downs in the bed, sliding cleats that can be adjusted into nine positions to help secure odd-shaped cargo, while external tie-down rails aim to make it easier to secure bulky loads.

Another welcome feature to result from the thousands of interviews is the rear load box access step, although it’s interesting to note that this feature was found on the last-generation, and South African-designed Ford Bantam that was launched 20 years ago!

Ford has also made it easier to fit accessories such as a canopy, cross bars or even a tent, with the fitment of six structural attachment points in the protective load box capping.

New Ford Ranger Raptor imagined in latest renderings ahead of premiere

The Blue Oval debuted their next generation Ranger bakkie in November last year but the exciting new Ford Ranger Raptor has been imagined ahead of its world premiere in a few weeks time.

Unofficial renders presented on Russian automotive platform Kolesa.ru have demonstrated what the new generation Ford Ranger Raptor may look like based on the hardcore treatement that it has been given in the past with some help from recent spy shots.

As expected, the renderings follow the same design aesthetic of the standard Ford Ranger with C-shaped DRLs flanked on each side of the grille which seem to be borrowed off of the F-150. As with the model before, this rendering incorporates a redesigned and raised front bumper which integrates into widened wheel arches. The rear incorporates the same bold FORD lettering flanked by intricate taillight graphics while a revised bumper has twin exhaust outlets concealed beneath.

Ford Ranger 2.0 EcoBlue Stormtrak 2022 UK review

Should I buy one?

“Woah, how much do those cost? That’s all you would ever need.” Really? Of all the shiny new cars we test, it’s a tradie’s truck that gets attention in the supermarket car park? But I suppose this bloke's comment is quite right. The Ranger has a powerful engine, a well-sorted chassis, solid off-road credentials, a nicely appointed cab that can accommodate four adults and a load bay that can be turned into a big boot with an optional Aeroklas canopy.

It makes sense why so many people now run pick-up trucks as private vehicles, and it’s easy to see why the majority of them go for the Ranger. And at only about £600 more than the everyday Wildtrak, the extra-cool look and feel of the Stormtrak seems a no-brainer for potential buyers.

WATCH: New Ford Ranger’s advanced cabin tech detailed

Ford Ranger fans are eagerly awaiting the new-generation of their favourite bakkie, which is expected to go on sale later this year. Not only does the new model up the ante in terms of engine options and loading innovations, but it also takes a significant stride when it comes to interior technology.

In its latest preview of the upcoming model, Ford has released more comprehensive information on the cabin innovations that buyers can expect.

It’s no secret that the new Ford Ranger is significantly more digitised. Gone is the traditional analogue instrument cluster; in its place you’ll find a customisable 8.0-inch digital instrument panel, which allows more information to be presented to the driver. It features start-up and farewell animations as well as realistic body style avatars.

Depending on the model, drivers will be able to toggle between various layouts and there’s also a ‘calm view’ that removes information on demand from the display. The digital instrument cluster also displays a different theme for each of the drive modes.

Most Fuel-Efficient Double-Cab Bakkies in SA

Are you looking for the most fuel-efficient double-cab bakkies currently on offer in South Africa? Here they are…

Double-cab bakkies serve multiple purposes in South Africa. They are workhorses, but they are also family vehicles used for a wide variety of leisure activities. They are often seen clambering up rocky mountain roads or towing boats and other leisure vehicles and accessories. For the average double-cab bakkie buyer in South Africa, outright capability is sometimes more important than how fuel-efficient it is, but if you consider that these vehicles often commute within the city too, then fuel efficiency becomes more relevant. After all, fuel efficiency has a direct impact on the overall cost of ownership of the vehicle and it should form part of your decision-making process when you are looking to buy a double-cab bakkie.

Note that this list is determined according to claimed manufacturer fuel consumption figures. In the real world, consumption will vary depending on factors such as driving style, load, road and terrain conditions and so forth, so consider this a guideline.

Pricing details are accurate as of June 2021.

WATCH | Ford shows technologies that will feature in all-new SA-bound Ranger

Ford's next Ranger will be the most technologically advanced Ranger yet.

Ford's SYNC 4A multimedia system will also debut in the new bakkie

The new Ranger is expected to arrive in South Africa later this year.

Ford's all-new Ranger bakkie will make its South African debut later in 2022 and boasts several technologies that make it the most advanced Ranger yet. According to Ford, the new bakkie offers an enhanced user experience, and the large-format screens' usability is close to that of smartphones.

Graham Pearson, Ranger vehicle program director, said: "Customers had an overwhelming response to the next-gen Ranger's new interior design and the technologies our teams had integrated on the inside. Once again, Ranger will re-define the segment with a premium interior that clearly shows people don't have to sacrifice interior comfort or technologies just because they desire a truck."

One of the big talking points around the new Ranger is Ford's SYNC 4A. Not only is the new system easier to navigate, but the communications and entertainment system offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The new Ranger's dashboard is also cleaner and decluttered, with an eight-inch digital instrument panel replacing the physical instrument cluster. The new digital unit can be customised to the driver's liking, and the panel displays a different theme for each driving mode.

Ford adds: "Depending on the variant, owners can toggle between layouts showing information such as driver-assist technologies, tachometer on or off, and extra gauges. There's also a 'calm view', which removes information on demand from the display."

REVIEW | The electric roller shutter is a boon on Ford's Ranger Stormtrak, but is it practical?

The Stormtrak is another special edition Ford Ranger, introduced locally in 2021.

The bakkie features unique items such as a bin divider and an electric roller shutter.

The Stormtrak is one of the last special edition Rangers before the all-new model arrives.

While South African bakkie lovers are waiting in great anticipation for the all-new Ranger to arrive, Ford's local arm will continue selling the current model until late in 2022. Then, the new Ranger will make its appearance and take on a renewed fight against the segment-leading Toyota Hilux.

But we're still a good few months away from that awaiting moment, and the current Ranger line-up continues the good fight in these trying times. Enhancing the Ranger portfolio is a raft of special edition models, the latest being the Stormtrak. Based on the existing Ranger platform, the bakkie offers all the bells and whistles you'd find in the Wildtrak and Thunder models, but only in a more special package.

The Ranger Stormtrak boasts all the technical attributes of its siblings, but adds items such as 'Stormtrak' embroidery in the seats and red stitching across the cabin. The most notable add-on is the power (electric) roller shutter that is operated via the key fob or buttons inside the cabin and load bay. This makes operation much easier, but the add-on is not without compromise.

My Ford Ranger is relatively new (2021 XLT DC) and has a Sync 3 system. Anyone know if it’s possible to upgrade the sound system or add a subwoofer at least? The sound is not great at the moment.

WATCH | Next Ford Ranger features some of the most advanced tech fitted to a bakkie yet

As we draw ever nearer to the South African launch of the all-new Ranger, Ford continues to tease fans and eager buyers with information on the upcoming bakkie. To date, we know that a new 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine will headline the range, and that the next Ranger Raptor will take things further with a 292kW 3.0-litre V6 turbo petrol engine.

The new Ranger is set to be the most advanced yet, with Ford pulling no punches as they go about ensuring that the bakkie boasts all the latest technologies and features. Ford says the technologies fitted to the new Ranger needed to keep occupants and other road users safe; hence they went above and beyond with the bakkie.

Franco Moras, Vehicle Safety manager, Ford Australia, said: "The next-generation Ranger not only delivers on the ability to help (owners) tackle whatever they want at work or with family and friends, but it helps them do that with the safety and peace of mind they want - thanks to the numerous new driver assistance technologies and safety features the new model offers."

New service price calculator for the Ford Ranger allows customers to compare quotes

Ford South Africa has announced a new Online Service Price Calculator for its Ranger customers.

The new initiative generates a quotation for a vehicle’s next scheduled service ahead of time, and also allows customers to compare quotes between different Ford dealerships, while allowing them to budget accordingly.

Ford’s Customer Service Division believes this new tool will play an important role in modernising the customer experience while also giving customers complete price transparency.

Although the online calculator is currently only available for Ranger customers, it will soon roll out to other model ranges, Ford says.

Clients can also choose whether they want to use Ford genuine parts or, where available, the more affordable Motorcraft parts which are also engineered to OE specifications.

I can hardly see any choice for customers, the dealers are going to charge pretty much the same, making this a much of a muchness, it's a cartel, not just an open market business.
