The Ford Ranger (T6) Thread

Fresh info suggests Ford Ranger PHEV will be built in SA!

We’ve unearthed fascinating information suggesting the new Ford Ranger PHEV will be built at the Blue Oval brand’s Silverton plant right here in South Africa…

After some extensive digging, Cars.co.za has uncovered fresh information strongly suggesting the new Ford Ranger PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) will be built at the Silverton assembly plant in South Africa, in what would be a boon for the local automotive manufacturing industry.

When the plug-in hybrid version of the double-cab Ranger was revealed in September 2023, the Blue Oval brand’s only official comment on the topic of production was that it would commence “in late 2024, with deliveries to customers in early 2025”. No mention was made of where the new PHEV derivative would be built.

As a reminder, the current-generation Ranger is manufactured at various Ford sites around the world, including Argentina, Thailand (which supplies SA with Raptor units), North America and indeed Silverton here in Mzansi. We asked Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) if Silverton was in line to produce the new electrified Ranger, but the company said it was still “early days” and that there was “nothing to confirm yet”.

So, we started digging. First, we came across an interesting LinkedIn profile belonging to a Ford process engineer based in Chennai, India. Keerthana Suresh’s profile shows she has been in her current role – centred on “battery pack assembly for electrification projects” – since December 2022. On her page, Suresh says she is “currently working” on the Ford Ranger PHEV “battery pack assembly process” for the Silverton plant in South Africa.

Nice, if only they moered the V6 diesel motor in there.
On a side note. This lip on the bottom of the front needs to have a look at and rethink the material/finish.

Mine on the Raptor has seen some road rash already. Gonna look kak very soon.

The rest of the front painted panels and lights on mine have PPF on, that the mofo horses chowed. Still between 2 minds if I should replace it and re-coat with ceramic coating, or just leave as is, or maybe put some kind of raptor vinyl or stripes over it. Quoted cost to replace and re-coat was R7.5k

DRIVEN: Ford Ranger Wildtrak X marks the spot with comfort and capability

Call it a “Raptor Lite” if you will, the new Ford Ranger Wildtrak X aims to hit a sweet spot for those wanting more off-road capability, but without splashing out on Ford’s wild flagship bakkie.

The new edition is available exclusively with Ford’s 2.0-litre BiTurbo engine and at R1,013,000 it commands a premium of R88,000 over the regular Wildtrak model and undercuts the V6 Wildtrak by R13,400.

But this is not just a special edition with a few fancy stickers.

For starters the Wildtrak X gains a significantly revised long-travel suspension system complete with Bilstein dampers. It also boasts a 30mm wider track and the ground clearance has been raised by 26mm.

This gives it the same 32 degree approach angle as the Raptor, while slotting between the latter and the regular Wildtrak with its 24 degree break-over and departure angles.

Ford Ranger beating Toyota Hilux in 2023 South African double cab bakkie sales race

When it comes to South African bakkie sales, it’s a well known fact that the Toyota Hilux enjoys a healthy lead over all of its rivals.

In the past three months, for instance, the Hilux sold an average of 3,207 units per month, followed by the Ford Ranger at 2,290 and Isuzu D-Max, which managed 1,604.

These figures, of course, are a combination of double cab, single cab and cab-and-a-half body configurations, and you might be surprised to learn that Toyota doesn’t lead in all three segments.

During the recent Ford Ranger Wildtrak X launch (read our review here), the carmaker gave us some insight into double cab sales in South Africa, and the Blue Oval is currently leading that race, according to the latest available year-to-date figures up to the end of August 2023.

During its presentation, Ford revealed that it sold 13,892 double cab Ranger models between January and August, which equates to a monthly average of 1,737 units per month.
