Long-Term Wrap: Flawless six-month adventure with our Ford Ranger Tremor

It was a good six months with our long-term Ford Ranger Tremor.

We covered almost 10,000 kilometres of tar including the various potholed grades that pass as tar, gravel and a 4x4 trail or two that highlighted its offroad prowess.

As a reminder, the Ranger Tremor is based on the XLT version of the popular double cab and adds a host of 4x4 additions that makes it incredibly capable and able to compete with the best out there.

The exterior gets a more bush-ready appeal with black honeycomb grille with LED auxiliary lights, bolder grey exterior details on the lower sections of the bumper, H-bar, fender vents, mirror caps, door handles and rear bumper.

It gets a ‘Tremor’ badge on the tailgate and decals on the sides and like the WIldtrak X and Raptor, a black Ford oval on the front grille and tailgate.

Long-term Intro: Ford Ranger Wildtrak Supercab is perfect for a pair

Having had a number of Ford Ranger double cabs as long-term vehicles, the latest one to join our stable is the Ranger Wildtrak Supercab.

Basically the Supercab takes the double cab’s cabin, shortens it allowing for more space in the loadbin, puts on two doors and two smaller “suicide” doors.

It’s certainly not family friendly but when there’s only two of you and it’s a Wildtrak, then the Ranger is fit for purpose.

Mostly though I reckon they’re purchased by businesses, especially the lower specced XLT and XL models, who use them to cart all manner of goods about with the added bonus that they are VAT deductible.

As with the Wildtrak double cab, the Supercab has Ford’s tried and tested 2.0-litre Bi-turbo diesel engine that’s good for 154kW and 500Nm of torque.

SA’s best-selling double-cab bakkie of 2024 revealed!

Which double-cab bakkie was South Africa’s best seller in 2024? Well, we have the dual-cab sales figures as well as those for single- and extended-cab 1-tonne bakkies…

You’ve likely already seen our list of South Africa’s best-selling bakkies overall for 2024. But what happens when we break down the figures by body style? Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to do here, allowing us to crown Mzansi’s most popular double-cab bakkie for 2024.

Let’s dive right into the sales statistics. According to figures kindly supplied by Lightstone Auto, the Ford Ranger retained the title of SA’s best-selling double-cab bakkie last year, with 20 078 units sold. By our maths, that represents 78.6% of the nameplate’s overall total for 2024 (and, according to the Blue Oval brand, a 33.4% share of the dual-cab segment).

Fascinatingly, Ford says that double-cab figure includes a considerable 1 930 units of the Raptor (which is imported from Thailand rather than built alongside the other Ranger derivatives at the local Silverton plant), meaning this 292 kW performance bakkie outsold Ford’s entire single-cab portfolio.

The Toyota Hilux – which will later in 2025 be offered in widebody Legend 55 guise – thus had to settle for 2nd place in South Africa’s double-cab rankings, with 15 322 unitsregistered last year. Based on our calculations, dual-cab sales comprised 46.9% of the Prospecton-built bakkie’s overall tally for 2024.
