Next-gen Ford Ranger: what we know about the rumoured V6 engine

The next-generation Ford Ranger (including the Raptor) will reportedly be offered with a V6 turbodiesel heart. So, what do we know about this engine?

Well, as the original report from CarExpert.com.au pointed out, the 3,0-litre turbodiesel engine is already in service in the F-150 in North America.

Mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission, this “Power Stroke” six-pot features a single turbocharger (as opposed to the two employed by the 2,0-litre unit in the current Ranger Raptor).

In the F-150, it generates peak power of 186 kW at 3 250 r/min and maximum torque of 597 N.m from as low as 1 750 r/min. It features a compacted graphite iron block with aluminium heads and a compression ratio of 16:1.

Wait, what? Ford Ranger bakkie converted into mini-F-150 Raptor!

Ever wish your Ford Ranger looked a little (okay, a lot) more like an F-150 Raptor? Well, a company in Thailand is making a habit of converting the smaller bakkie into a mini-clone of its larger sibling.

Yes, Bangkok-based TTN Hypersport starts with a Ranger and adds a replica F-150-inspired grille (complete with “Ford” lettering and integrated LEDs), headlamps and taillamps. From what we can tell, the tailgate also comes courtesy of the Blue Oval brand’s larger bakkie.

Ford Performance rolls out off-road packs for US-spec Ranger bakkie!

Ford Performance in North America has released three new off-road packages for its Ranger (that market doesn’t get the Ranger Raptor, after all). The new dealer-installed packages for the bakkie include three levels of hardware, software and graphics combinations.

All three kits feature an off-road levelling kit including Fox shocks with “optimised” Ford tuning, fresh 17-inch “Dyno Grey” wheels and “Ford Performance” graphics.

As a reminder, the US-spec Ranger is powered by the Blue Oval brand’s 2,3-litre EcoBoost engine, which directs its 201 kW and 420 N.m to all four corners via a ten-speed automatic transmission.

New (SA-built!) Ford Ranger Thunder double-cab revealed for Europe

Ford in Europe has taken the wraps off a new special-edition Ranger Thunder variant based on the Wildtrak derivative.

The fresh-faced Thunder-badged model comes finished in Sea Grey exterior paint with red highlights on the grille and sports bar. You’ll also notice the chunky “Thunder” badging on the front doors and tailgate.

Other updates include the adoption of black 18-inch alloy wheels, with the grille, rear bumper, skid plates, foglamp surrounds and exterior door handles also finished in black.

LED headlamps featuring darkened bezels also ship standard, while the bakkie's taillmaps have been darkened, too. The Ranger Thunder is furthermore offered with an optional (black) Mountain Top powder-coated roller shutter complete with a load-bay divider.

Inside, there’s plenty of leather along with the “Thunder” badges embroidered in red, a colour extended to stitching on the steering wheel, seats and instrument panel. The sill plates, meanwhile, feature red illumination.

New (Wildtrak-based) Ford Ranger Thunder confirmed for South Africa!

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has effectively confirmed a new Ranger Thunder double-cab derivative will soon be added to its local range.

The Blue Oval brand’s local arm posted a teaser on its social media channels (as well as a "keep me informed" page on its website), previewing the new Wildtrak-based Thunder variant.

New Ford Ranger Thunder bakkie: prices for South Africa revealed

Earlier in July 2020, CARmag.co.za was the first to confirm the new Ford Ranger Thunder would be offered in South Africa. And now we have unearthed local pricing for the Wildtrak-based double-cab bakkie.

From what we understand, the Thunder package will be offered on locally built Wildtrak models powered by the Blue Oval brand’s 157 kW/500 N.m twin-turbodiesel 2,0-litre, four-cylinder engine.

Our information suggests the Thunder will be available in both 4x2 and 4x4 guise (both with 10-speed automatic transmissions) here in South Africa, likely from early August. There’s also a chance the kit will be offered on the 3,2-litre, five-cylinder TDCi version of the Wildtrak, although this is unconfirmed for now.

So, what sort of money are you looking at here? Well, our information says the Thunder package will cost you some R36 000. A spot of maths suggests the Ranger Thunder 2,0 BiT 4x2 variant will thus be priced at around R738 600, while the 2,0 BiT 4x4 derivative will come in at about R789 600. If the 3,2 TDCi makes the cut, expect a price of around R714 200.

Ford South Africa cuts all 3,2 TDCi manual models from Ranger line-up

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has discontinued all Ranger variants that combine the firm’s 3,2 TDCi engine with a six-speed manual gearbox.

As confirmed by Ford’s latest price bulletin (thanks to our friends over at duoporta.com for the tip), five derivatives have been trimmed from the local Ranger bakkie line-up.

Ford SA creates Madiba-themed Ranger for Nelson Mandela Foundation

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has built a Madiba-themed Ranger, donating the special bakkie to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The double-cab model’s roof features the South African flag, while the bonnet boasts a “meticulously painted” portrait of the former president. The side panels and tailgate pay further tribute to the Nelson Mandela Foundation and point to the celebration of 18 July as Mandela Day.

“At Ford we are very proud of our South African heritage,” said Neale Hill, managing director of Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa.

“The company has an exceptionally proud legacy in the country spanning more than 96 years – one built on continued investment and innovation to produce segment-defining products, empower communities through creating job opportunities, and striving to improve the world around us for a brighter future.

“No one did more in pursuit of the South African dream than Madiba himself; it is thus a privilege to be able to hand over this one-of-a-kind Ranger to the worthy Nelson Mandela Foundation,” Hill said.

Quick one.
When searching on the internet for parts or accessories, choosing the model ranger i have ( Late 2018 ) it says T7 model?
T6 being pre-2016 facelift model. 2016-2019 being T7?!

The model above my post would be the T6 right?

It is the T6 (post facelift). There is no T7 out.

The T7 is the entirely new next gen out in 2022.

So that makes the 2020 models post-post-facelift?

There has only been 1 actual facelift/redesign & that was from late 2015 onwards.

Everything else to date is incremental spec changes with the exception of the change to the Biturbo Raptor motor & the 10 speed auto but even then that didn't change the interior, exterior, underpinnings etc

I need to slightly correct you, 2020 brought a slightly revised grill to the Ranger (the middle bar which carries the Ford badge is 2 thin bars whereas the first facelift had a thick middle bar to which the Ford badge is affixed. Also XLT received a new mag wheel design.

Not disagreeing with you but that is hardly a facelift, rather a spec and/or Model Year upgrade.
