The Ford Ranger (T6) Thread

Last week Monday my dad and his 3 golfing buddies drove down to St Francis from EL for a round of golf, in his 2014 3.2 Auto 4x4 that has 108 000km on the clock. After the St Francis round, they were heading back to the N2 to carry on towards George for the rest of the week of golf tour.

Just as he entered Humansdorp, sudden power loss and vibrations, along with massive smoking from the rear. Pulled up at the Kouga Ford dealership to find oil sprayed down the passenger side of the vehicle and all over the engine bay and the engine sounding very rough and clattery.

Mechanic popped the bonnet, they started it and switched off straight away - he knew exactly what had happened.

A hole through number 2 piston head, engine destroyed. This is apparently quite common!! New engine on order from Ford SA and thankfully the Ranger still has extended warranty until next month - Thank Goodness!

Up to this point, the vehicle has served my dad well and while driven hard when on his holidays, it has never towed or been abused.

Ironically, he already had a deal on a new Supercab lined up, so the trade in will be a non-runner until the engine gets replaced :laugh::laugh:

All new Ford Rangers come standard with Ford Protect, comprising a four-year or 120 000km comprehensive warranty, three-year or unlimited distance roadside assistance and five-year or unlimited km corrosion warranty. A six-year or 90 000km service plan is included which covers six services. The recommended service interval is 15 000km or annually, whichever occurs first.

Under the bonnet you'll still find the 2.2-litre four-cylinder Duratorq TDCi engine good for 118kW and 385Nm of torque from 1500 to 2500r/min.

The Single Cab and SuperCab models are available in two and four-wheel drive specification mated to a six-speed manual transmission, or a six-speed automatic in the 4x2 derivative. The Ranger XL Double Cab can be specified in 4x2 or 4x4 versions, with both available in manual or automatic.

Pricing! Ford Ranger XL gains optional 'Sport Pack' in South Africa

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has rolled out a new optional “Sport Pack” for XL derivatives in its locally assembled Ranger bakkie line-up.

The fresh Sport Pack adds a gloss-black grille (replacing the standard flat-black version), with the 16-inch silver alloy wheels upgraded to 17-inch “Panther” items in gloss-black, complete with 265/65 R17 tyres.

The package – which adds R16 500 to the price of the chosen XL variant – furthermore includes a tubular sports bar over the load bay as well as a black rear bumper. Judging by the accompanying images, a subtle "Sport" decal for the tailgate is also part of the kit.

The Blue Oval brand has also added new dealer-fitted black side steps (which it says “greatly improve” access to the cabin) to the options list, priced at R5 050.

In addition, Ranger XL models can now be ordered with Ford’s 8,0-inch colour touchscreen infotainment system rather than the standard Sync 1 unit with a four-inch LCD. This brings Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality and two USB slots to the table (though does without embedded voice recognition and navigation) for the price of R6 080.

The locally assembled Ford Ranger has emerged victorious in the 2020 AA-Kinsey Report on parts pricing, achieving the lowest total cost of service, repair and replacement parts in the popular double cab segment.

The Ranger also ranked as the lowest parts basket as a percentage of selling price, at 13.86 percent – the second-lowest figure in the entire 2020 AA-Kinsey Report which surveyed a broad spectrum of vehicles across each sector of the South African motor industry, from budget cars to pickups and sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

SA bakkie sales: Ford Ranger on top as Toyota Hilux dips in Oct 2020​


While Naamsa no longer releases individual model sales figures to the public, we have laid our hands on information confirming South Africa’s best-selling bakkies for October 2020.

And, for a change, the Toyota Hilux isn’t on top. Instead, the Ford Ranger (2 203) ends up as the best-selling bakkie locally during the month, with its Japanese rival having to settle for an unfamiliar second (with sales interestingly falling from 4 252 units in September to 1 390 in October, with the latter month featuring a switchover to the facelifted model). The Nissan NP200, meanwhile, remains in third place with 1 230 units registered.


The Isuzu D-Max (1 131) is just behind in fourth, with the Nissan NP300 Hardbody holding steady in fifth on 451 units. The Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-Up (336) climbs one spot to grab sixth, with the GWM Steed (191) likewise up one to seventh.

Ya, Ford dealers were doing pretty big discounts (we picked up an XLT Supercab last month), but I think the biggest reason was because Toyota buyers are waiting for the facelift models to come through. I'm pretty sure we'll see Toyota back on top this month or next once facelift stock starts reaching Toyota dealers in decent numbers....

TL;DR: Ranger numbers were fairly constant // Hilux sales plunged
 
A possible reason that Toyota sales plunged is because they did not have the stock to sell.

Why buy a Navara when you can spend 30-50% more for an X Class which will REALLY teach you about depreciation?

I think the fact that there is not really an entry level Navara works slightly against them, Toyota basically have a Hilux for everyone, they have models with two and three airbags for the lower range to keep the prices down.

What Navara is suffering from is the same thing that's ailing the Amarok, people are just not yet sold on a bakkie being more than just a bakkie, they don't care much for the safety features and comfort, as long as it's a big double cab, has a big engine and a high ride height.
 
Ford Ranger gets another subtle facelift and sporty new XL Street model

The current-generation Ford Ranger has been on the market for nine years now and the next all-new version is not too far off, with sources indicating that it should be with us by around 2022.

But the carmaker has certainly done a decent job of keeping the Ranger bakkie fresh over the years with numerous subtle facelifts and upgrades. The latest such upgrade has just been announced in Thailand, and although no changes have been confirmed for the South African range, our models usually follow the Thai market upgrades so there’s a good chance you’ll see the freshened bakkies in showrooms in the not too distant future.

Not that much has changed in the case of the 2021 Thai-market Ranger.

Apart from some interesting new derivatives, the key difference is the front grille, where we see most derivatives adopting a similar design to the Thunder edition, which was recently introduced in South Africa.

The new grille has a pair of side “nostrils” as well as mesh patterning and “Ranger” lettering at the top edge, and in the Wildtrak models those nostrils are finished in orange.
