Yesterday morning the power went out here where I live. It was off when I woke up. It stayed off for close to 24 hours. The municipality said to me over the phone (they answered the call very quickly to my surprise) that it was a Ring Out. I have no clue what that means, but this information I got round about nine hours after we noticed the power was off. The lady on the phone promised me that power would return yesterday as they had technicians working on the substation.

Must be a pretty big substation as there were hoards of electricity people digging two massive holes in the ground two street blocks away from my place. No substation there, so it must have something to do with cables. I know that we had two previous cable theft issues before and on those occasions smaller teams dug at one of the two spots they dug up yesterday. If this was also cable theft related, the lady at the municipality didn’t know about it I guess and the fact that there were so many people working on the problem meant that they were probably putting in eclectic fencing underground or some such cable theft deterrent.

Anyway, long story short the power did come up sometime this morning. Close to 24 hours later. What I noticed and the main reason for this blog is that the mains switch on the electricity distribution board in my house was never important enough for me to go check in that first initial 9 hours. I have become so used to power issues being the fault of the government or Eskom that I didn’t even bother looking at the DB box to see if the trip switch tripped or something.

Says a lot about our power reliability if this turns out to be true for other people too.
