E-tags must be useful on the N1 Bakwena highway to Warmbaths. Had to take someone there yesterday, a few cars just flew past through that e-tag booth while the rest of us sat like suckers with cash or credit cards. If I was a regular user of that road I might be interested.

As someone who drove that highway once on a friday before a long weekend - hell yes!
I started driving the potholed road over Brits after that.

Hence my initial disclaimer of "(sorry if you own an Audi/Merc and are not tagged) what is it with Audi- (any model) and Merc (especially SUV) having tags?". Waiting for the latest Sanral press release "Look how fluid the traffic flows this week - all thanks to e-tags!".

Cant use the gantries to determine that. Get on the R21 south at Waterkloof AFB to OR Tambo you are tolled immediately where the e-toll road start. Leave the e-toll roads area at N1 north just after Lynnwood road, you have a gantry...

Probably got their bread buttered on both sides.

You pay per gantry you pass under, irrespective of how much of the road you actually used. The whole xx cents per kilometer thing was lying to the public.

you do not have to have an etag, the Bakwena highways have a different disk that work on them
 
Heard on 702/Cape Talk this morning that people are getting SMS'ed "invoices" ...
 
Also heard a caller calling in to say he has a tag, is registered and prepaid and has already been billed R650 (vs the R450 cap).

The Bakwena tag is an older version of the current Kapsch tag, it is also a PREMID type, same system, just slightly older tech. Bakwena tag readable with new gantries.

the gantry charges you from that point to the next gantry - if you get off before the next gantry, which inevitably you normally do, Sanral pockets the part you did not use

But in fairness, there are situations where you get on and off the highway, without passing a gantry and 'score' that part

PS: Fark e-tolls!

Yes, and I myself have said that just now now.

I am trying to determine if SANRAL intention is to toll for road used or road going to be used or mixture of both, given my example.

This is a bit concerning as I haven't read anywhere that SANRAL is required to send you a paper invoice. Also, if they only need to prove that they've sent the bill then you're left at the mercy of the mobile networks. Non-delivery of your invoice becomes a very real problem (even more so than the post office?).

That's where it does not make sense, you pay as soon as the R21 starts, but also where the e-tolls ends just after Lynnwood if going north, Sanral is very sneaky that way.

I think there are a lot of BS stories out - some motivated to weaken our resolve and others aimed at keeping us motivated to resist e-tolls - I've set my target to have my day in court, so all these stories don't really interest me much

There are certain legal requirements for a valid tax invoice. I'm pretty sure an SMS doesn't meet them.
