Same situation existed just before WW2... they looked weak. Their strength lies in the fact that they are so strongly linked with their partners, and they always move in sync with their allies (US and France mainly). They don't tend to move without first discussing events in detail with their allies, and in return they generally have their ducks in a row, and the support they need. When you take on Britain, you take on several large countries at once.

So how do you interpret his comment that spaniards should pay back their debt instead of so much siesta? Is there some secret interpretation there? Taken at face value he is saying they sleep too much (too much siesta in his words) and don't work hard enough (concentrate on paying their debts in his words)
How else would you interpret his statement?

Thats what he said yes. so I interpret is the same as you. I don't see what your issue is with what he said. Did they spend to much on some stuff and have debt or don't they? Just like Greece.

Your faulty assumption is that it was a racial stereotype.
It has nothing to do with race.
But his flippant diagnosis of the underlying reasons for the European debt crisis (particularly in those Mediterranean countries) is actually fairly accurate.

I was using racism in it's broader definition as in:
Racism and racial discrimination are often used to describe discrimination on an ethnic or cultural basis, independent of whether these differences are described as racial

Whether or not you specifically accept this definition is irrelevant, the word is used in this way widely, even legally and this is the way I was using the word so yes, I stick to my assertion that it's a racist stereotype. Using the word racism to describe any negative stereotype based on race, colour, nationality (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origin. (That's from the British legal definition)

To those obsessed with race, everything has racist overtones.
That may sound fairly self evident, but the above incident has once again high lighted its prevalence.
