Very true, I enjoyed this video.

I am not a fan of this "everybody must learn to code" bandwagon. There is much more to "coding" than stringing together a couple of lines of computer language.

"Everybody must research cancer" or "everybodie must learn to spel" seems more important. :)

Maths and Science ... y this won't happen here in SA ... kids are scared to do this and government has lowered the bar dramatically.

Think you are missing the point. Coding is used to train them them to solve problems and think in a different way. They don't need to go become coders because of it just like i didn't become a mathematician just because I took math at school.

Might even lead to somebody finding a cure for cancer one day because he has an extra/more enhanced skill.

Coding is just a mechanism though - they can just as well bombard them with millions of word sum questions, riddles and mechano sets.

I agree with you and should have phrased my reply different/less sarcastic. The "coding" part is what bothers me. It feels the wrong way around. Coding is based solving problems and thinking in a different way. But I concede they might go about it in this way because it might seem more fun. Also, many ways to skin a cat. :)

What is wrong with teaching basic coding? It makes people understand computers much better, no matter their final job. Computers are everywhere around us these days. In the same way that learning math is good, even if one's job does not involve much math.

Define basic coding.

Increase awareness.. never a bad thing. However. Coding is not simply a skill.. its a mentality... if you dont have the mentality it will become quite mundane to you... just my opinion

Make them solve complicated "problems" with code, like compound interest calculations or telling the to draw shapes in the console window with characters using a for loop...the stupid things they taught us in school.

The intent to get these children some exposure to computer science. Some of them might then be crazy enough to go into it as a career. It makes perfect sense to work towards computer science becoming a core subject.

No different to mathematics, physics, chemistry, history and language. Some people will want to learn more, others not. They can't find out it is interesting if they have no exposure though.

You do have a good point. Agreed. As I said no harm in extra awareness.
