The question that I've been led a few times as a Mac user is, how to make my Mac faster. There are a few ways, but one of the hardware methods is to upgrade your Mac memory. The general assumption is that the Mac can't be upgraded, which is partially true, but memory and Hard drives as easily to upgrade. So I decided to post my experience
What type of memory?
Finding memory for the MacBook pro is quite easy. Hell, Apple even provides you with the model and type of memory required. But be careful on the brand. You don't have to overpay for the Apple brand memory. Kingston and Corsair have specific memory products for your Mac. But first check. A great website is http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270 The site explains the memory AND the steps to replace the memory. For my MBP, I bought the Kingston 8gb (2x4gb) set.
Where to buy memory
Yu can go and buy at about any place, if you know what you are looking for. Me, I ordered mine via Takealot on the MORE US category. The only problem I has was late delivery, but Takeslot rectified the error and apologized, before I complained. Good service.
The scary part. Replacing the memory
This isn't as scary as you might think. First thing, get a flat table, place a clean cloth and place the laptop upside down. What I do is place another white cloth in front of the laptop to place the screws on. Take out each screw and place it in the same order on the white cloth. You should now be able to open the panel. Mine was stuck. While you have it open, take a soft cloth and clean the panel. The amount of dust is scary. For each version, the placement of the screws, size of the screws as well as the memory. Depending on the model, there might be one or two slots for the memory. Mine had two slots. First touch the metal of the body of the laptop you dont want to fry anything via static You press the clips outwards and the top memory will move up. Take it out carefully. Don't Touch the pins, chips. The bottom memory also uses the clip method. This was a bit more problematic. It is much more difficult to get it out. DON'T FORCE ANYTHING. work carefully. When the memory is removed, place the new memory in the slot, first the bottom slot at and angle. Press it carefully down until y hear a click. Do the same with the top slot. Replace panels and screws. Start up. And it should work
