The Humble Indie Bundle: Linux users prepared to pay more for games

The Humble Indie Bundle is a bundle of games that are being distributed under the "pay what you want" model.

Currently, Windows users are paying on average $5.84 for the bundle.

Linux users are paying $13.75, and Mac users are paying $7.99.

Now I'm not saying that Linux users are wealthier, more selfless, or nicer than Windows users, but this does bring up some interesting thoughts.

Are Windows users prepared to pay less because, when it comes to choice of games, they are spoiled?

Are Linux users prepared to pay more because they are so grateful to find games that run on Linux?

Do Linux users pay more in order to show extra support to developers who release games on their platform?

Do Mac users pay more than Windows users because they are used to being ridiculously overcharged for their hardware? :p

Statistically, this discussion is somewhat silly, but still interesting, I think...

Another interesting point:

Although Windows users pay less than half the amount of the average Linux user the contributions by Windows users still make up more than 50% of the total revenue. So in other words Windows users pay much less but is still paying more than the Linux and Mac users combined.

I understand that is because there are a lot more Windows users than Linux/Mac users but at the end of the day most game developers look at the bottom line. While Windows makes by far the biggest contribution to the bottom line they will continue to target that market and ignore the Linux market.

Linux users have access to many less games than Windows users, so of course they will pay more ..... they're happy to fork out because they've been left behind. I like that I can play any new game that comes out for Windows.

That's a good point; I didn't see that. I guess the only real way games will ever be released 0-day for Linux is if Linux's market share increases exponentially.

Linux users have access to many less games than Windows users, so of course they will pay more ..... they're happy to fork out because they've been left behind. I like that I can play any new game that comes out for Windows.

And that is why my desktop runs Windows.

I would love to run Linux on all my PCs, but gaming will always be the reason I run Windows.

It's a catch-22, really...

People who would use Linux stick with Windows to play games because there are no games for Linux, yet there are no games for Linux because everyone uses Windows...

Maybe per-capita you will find more programmers and IT professionals using Linux, who has more appreciation of the work that went into the development of those games, and want to support that kind of distribution model.

If they can make that happen, maybe they, themselves can get money for what they do.

Or like people who were once a waiter in their life always tipping waiters well
