Hyundai drops fresh sketches of entry-level Venue crossover

At the end of March 2019, Hyundai announced its upcoming new entry-level crossover would be badged as the “Venue”. And now, ahead of the fresh-faced model's official debut at the New York International Auto Show, the Korean firm has released a batch of sketches.

The design sketches show what the automaker describes as its “newest, smallest and most affordable SUV”, depicting the newcomer from the front- and rear-three-quarter angles, as well as providing a glimpse inside the cabin.

Up front, the new Venue clearly draws some styling inspiration from its larger siblings, adopting a stacked headlamp arrangement and the automaker’s signature “Cascading” grille. It’s a little more conventional round back, although the sketch does show a chunky faux-diffuser and a cheeky rear spoiler. We’re guessing the production model will drop those impossibly large alloy wheels and adopt rear doors, though.

The Venue is expected to slot into Hyundai’s burgeoning crossover range below the Creta and Kona, with the SA-spec version likely to be imported from India.

Hyundai previews SA-bound EcoSport rival

Hyundai is about to add yet another high-rider to its growing SUV stable, and this one will attract the attention of those at the budget end of the market.

The Hyundai Venue will be fully revealed at the New York Auto Show on April 18, but these official design sketches are said to give us a strong indication of how it will look.

Which is not boring, to say the least.

According to Hyundai South Africa, the baby SUV is expected to launch locally during the second half of 2019 and like its larger Creta sibling, it will be sourced from India. It’s too early to comment on pricing, but it will certainly undercut the aforementioned Creta and Kona.

The powertrain mix has yet to be officially announced, but IndianAutosBlog reports that engines for the Indian market will include a 1.4 normally aspirated petrol and 1-litre turbopetrol, both with 74kW, and a 1.4-litre turbodiesel rated at 66kW.

I still don't get the appeal of that shittry little ford. I drove one and it was such an atrociously assembled collection of crud I was astounded that so many of them are on the roads.

Hyundai Venue Revealed as Kona's Junior

Another crossover has evolved from Hyundai's humble hatchback platform.

Hyundai has added another quirky crossover to its compact vehicle line-up, called the Venue.

This new Korean front-wheel drive high-rider will position itself below the Kona in Hyundai’s product portfolio and can be thought of as a slightly more refined and sophisticated Creta alternative.

Styling elements include LED embedded cube headlights and secondary thin-slit headlamps mounted at the bonnet-to-grille shutline. This is an obvious evolution of the daring styling Hyundai first applied to Kona. Venue’s tailgate features a pronounced kink and crease treatment, also anchored by cube taillights. Viewed as a design purpose, Venue is Hyundai’s attempt to bring large SUV styling elements to an A-segment crossover buyer.

Inside there is a an 8-inch touchscreen which mirrors all your Smartphone functions via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto and dual USB ports for device recharging. Vehicle information other than road and engine speed is relayed via TFT instrumentation and the driver directs the Venue with a leather-covered steering wheel.

Meet Hyundai's EcoSport rival, due in SA later this year

Hyundai is hoping that its new Venue will attract trendy folk that otherwise would have considered a compact SUV like the EcoSport, as well as those that might have settled for a regular hatch.

Similar in dimension to the aforementioned Ford, the Venue will be Hyundai’s most affordable SUV when it goes on sale in South Africa during the second half of 2019.

The baby crossover follows a similar design script to the Kona, with a two-tier frontal design dominated by a cascading grille and large cube headlights, but the compact also gets some funky touches like the option of a contrasting white roof colour. You can even order it in a denim inspired hue with matching interior cloth, or turn heads with an Apple Green exterior colour.

The Venue made its public debut at the New York Auto Show on Monday, where Hyundai’s US vice president of product, Mike O’Brien remarked: “The all-new Venue might be small in size, but it’s big on practicality and personality.”

While what you see here is the US-spec Venue, South Africa will get the Indian-built model, which has a different engine line-up and other minor spec differences.
