The illegal mining thread

Illegal miners swallow gold in condoms

Illegal miners are swallowing unrefined gold and platinum in condoms as a new tactic to avoid arrest for smuggling that is costing the industry R20-billion a year, the police told parliament on Friday.

Illegal mining has plagued the mining sector for decades, and extends from small time pilfering to global organised crime networks.

The crime costs the industry and government an estimated R20-billion a year in lost sales, taxes and royalties, the Chamber of Mines, an industry body, says.

"They are ingesting the amalgam concealed in condoms and this is done for two principle reasons. One is to be able to bypass mine security and the other is also to prevent being robbed by opposing groups," Brigadier Ebrahim Kadwa, a commander in the Hawks organised crime unit, said, showing parliament slides of gold-filled condoms in miners' x-rays.

Potentially toxic clumps of mercury and gold concentrate can be refined to extract gold once passed through the body.

Illegal mining involves a complex criminal web that extends from desperate unemployed workers, many from neighbouring countries, to gun-toting gang bosses and front companies exporting refined products to global markets.

Ummm Meshack you blithering idiot, you can and SHOULD be told you're engaging in illegal activity if you are mining in an area where a license has been granted to a company for those mineral rights, and you don't have the license and are not following any of the legally required safety protocols.

When you are hungry you don't care about safety...Well they never cared about safety in the first place.

Illegal miner killed by falling rock

Polokwane – A 44-year-old illegal miner died on Wednesday morning after a rock fell on him while he was mining in Maandagshoek near Driekop in Limpopo, police said.

Spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said Diphasong Commence Lerutla was mining chrome when the incident occurred.

Police were deployed to the scene shortly after 10:00 where Lerutla was declared dead.

Mojapelo said there had been a steady increase in illegal mining along the R37 between Lebowakgomo and Burgersfort.

Several people have already been arrested and mining machinery confiscated.

"We call on all members of the community to halt this tendency of engaging in illegal mining."

Bodies of 7 suspected illegal miners found

Johannesburg - The decomposing bodies of seven suspected illegal miners were found in a veld near a mineshaft in Benoni, east of Johannesburg, police said on Sunday.

"It is suspected that they all have been shot and killed somewhere and the bodies later dumped," said Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, spokesperson for the police in Gauteng province.

"Police have opened murder cases for investigation."

The alarm was raised after somebody saw them lying in the veld.

Police think they may have been lying there for two or three days.

They have not been identified yet and further details such as the name of the mine were not immediately available.

"Police are also appealing to anyone with information relating to the identity of the bodies as well as information about the perpetrators to come forward," said Dlamini.

In November, four illegal miners were killed and 15 others arrested after a shootout with police in Boksburg, also along the eastern mining belt of Johannesburg.

Known as "zama zamas", illegal miners enter closed or disused shafts without mining licences and work without the usual safety standards in place. The secretive community has evolved into an informal industry where the yield is sold on parallel markets.

This is a problem and will be impacting mine closure requirements.

Currently, the "accepted" method for safe closure is to provide access control around the perimeter of old mine workings. With the increase in illegal mining, its evident this method will not be enough.

Already, we have been asked to consider "backfilling" old surface mining voids or blasting, closing, old underground access tunnels. This is very expensive.

Seeing that the miners aren't making enough to get out of informal settlement life you have to wonder who is doing the killing. Is it the zamazama or syndicates who take the gold to "market"?

I was at a mine and they told us the lengths these syndicates go to to ensnare employees. A small loan builds into you owing some gang so much that the only payment they'll accept is turning you into a mule to supply precious metals from a refinery

That is scary. :wtf:.

At our one mine in Limpopo we found unused explosives, grinders, generators and old mine plans. They are well prepared and professional about it. Its definately the syndicates.

Six illegal miners nabbed during gun battle in Ekurhuleni

Johannesburg - Gauteng police said on Wednesday that they had taken in for questioning a group of six men suspected to be involved in illegal mining gangsterism in Ekurhuleni areas of Benoni, Springs and Actonville.

Mining areas in Ekurhuleni have for years been plagued by illegal mining activities that go hand-in-hand with gangsterism as gangs of illegal miners try to mine and steal gold, as well as other precious minerals from each other.

Police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the police surrounded and then arrested the six men, all foreign nationals, in an open field in Actonville as they were shooting at each other.

Dlamini says the police have seized five unlicensed firearms including a revolver and four pistols, adding that investigations are being conducted as the gangs might have been responsible for several murders of illegal miners and house robberies in these areas.

The scale and deaths that go with illegal mining just go to show that the authorities have lost the fight against illegal activities or any sort in this country. Not that it wasn't obvious before.
