The iOS 10 Thread/Discussion

Apple's iOS 10 to support RAW shooting

Apple's new iOS 10 brings lots of new features and improvements. The most positive impressions came from unlocking lots of default apps and APIs to developers, which will allow for much better customization and user experience later on.

The iOS 10's camera wasn't detailed at the keynote, but as it turns out Apple will be enabling saving the RAW image in DNG format from the camera's hardware. It's not clear whether this will appear as an option in the default camera app, but third-party developers are allowed to use it if they want.

RAW shooting on mobiles isn't exactly mainstream, but some people like to use it in more demanding scenes as they may do a better job of the processing than the phone itself. So no matter if Apple adds RAW option in the camera app or not, there are going to be third-party camera apps to allow capturing DNG images on the current and upcoming iPhones.

We already heard that iOS 10 will allow you to uninstall some of the default apps and will emable third-party apps to use Live Photos. More and more features are being revealed as the developers are dissecting the new dev kits and OS previews, so stay tuned for more info.

3D Touch now works on folders. It will show you apps that have notifications pending and you can rename the folder.

Battery life is not to bad either on the first beta

This I like...glad to see 3D Touch functionality getting a huge boost in iOS 10.

I'm a fan of it

Rich Notifications in iOS 10 Will Eventually Work on Devices Without 3D Touch

One of the more interesting new features in iOS 10 is Rich Notifications. Officially showcased yesterday during the WWDC 2016 keynote, the functionality allows users to view photos and videos or respond to a message directly from a notification.

But the feature currently requires use of 3D Touch, which is only offered on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. But according to Apple, that will eventually change:

“Support for rich notifications is optimized for 3D Touch, and in iOS 10 beta 1 the feature is available only on iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus,” according to the iOS 10, beta 1 release notes. “Future betas will provide access to this functionality for users of iPhone models without support for 3D Touch.”

More than likely, Apple is still figuring out exactly how to implement Rich Notifications on the older devices.

Apple’s iOS 10 offers a number of new features for users including a redesigned Apple Music, Photos, Messages, and Maps app along with third-party developer support for Siri and more.

Users will also be able to delete some stock Apple apps from their devices and reinstall them if needed.

A public beta version of iOS 10 will arrive next month with an official debut sometime this fall.

The software will be supported on most modern devices including the iPhone 5 and later and the fourth-generation iPad and later.

is this the update that leaves my iphone 5 behind?

So after playing a bit with it on my iPhone 5 which I normally just use as a MP3 Player in my jeep, I have to say iOS 10 runs ok on it. It feels a bit smoother than 9.3 beta. It lags here and there but so does it on my iPhone 6 and 6s+.

Funny enough, opening of apps are smoother on the iPhone 5 and 6 compared to the 6s+. I had to enable "reduce transparency" on the 6s+ to get rid of the stutter.

Siri can now tell you about nearby restaurants. Still can't tell me the cricket score though.

Busy downloading to iPad 4th Gen :p I don't have the guts for my 6s yet :D

So iOS 10 is running - some stuff is super buttery smooth and then some things are laggy like hell. If things are going to be polished it should be a nice upgrade from iOS 9.
