The "Is Windows 8 a Flop?" Thread

this is how it always goes with M$,( Linux anybody????)

one great o/s that everybody likes and then another o/s that tries something new and experimental that nobody likes.
like win xp then vista, then 7 and now 8, I can bet you 9 will "fix" or at least improve the features introduced with 8.

one can almost say 8 is the beta test of touch screen tech on a laptop or pc, it certainly looks like it.
we can only hope M$ decide to turn around with this foolish idea, its a sinking ship like vista was.

if you want touch screen, on a tablet, you cant go wrong with android, but the apple fanboys will burn me alive for this :-)

just wish you could load a whole pc with android o/s, never been happier with android.

just upgraded to it and find it rather cumbersome
its hard to find settings ... hell .. did not even know how to turn it off
its too focused on touch and leaves us desktop users out in the cold
guess this really is another vista

Keyboard shortcuts all the way my friend.

For the record....shutdown is hidden in the right hand side charm menu. And yes thats retarded.

I think it is not bad, well once you get used to the Keyboard shortcuts as stated above.

Not the best of ideas but it will do.

Sorry if this has been asked before but what happened to the Ad Hoc network feature? I've been using Win8 for a few weeks and only noticed it today. :what:

I've been using Windows 8 at work in dev environment and its been nothing but smooth sailing. Last night I very quickly formatted and installed it on my home pc. It does have a few annoyances but I really enjoy the OS :D

I 100% agree with you, it's like anything new, just takes a little getting used to.

Off topic but remember MS promised us no crippled Win 8 versions, just 8, 8 Pro and Media Centre as a priced add-on? Well, referring to http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/503834-Laptop-needed-urgentely-NX-M20EA-003-quot-Acer-Aspire-V3-771-53214G50Maii-17-3-quot-or-si?p=9780646&viewfull=1#post9780646 my interest was piqued by "Windows 8 SL (64bit)".

From the following references it seems that SL is a cheap OEM "Single Language, Home Version" of Windows 8 whose limitations are not fully understood:

Seems the M$ leopard hasn't changed its spots :(

Very, very late to the thread but I'd like to toss in a summation of my experience: Windows 8 + Classic Shell = absolutely fine. The Metro interface doesn't exist as far as I'm concerned, as my lappie boost straight to the desktop. Plus, there are nice touches to be found on the desktop such as the revamped task manager and file transfer dialogues.

Metro is the sucketh, and MS are daft to attempt to force that on people, but Windows 8 seems solid enough under the skin.

The best thing about Windows 8 is that you appreciate Windows 7 so much more after reinstalling it. :)

+1 Have it on one of my two pcs, I am so glad I did not upgrade both machines. While I love the performance boosts in windows 8 many other things iratate the crap out of me.

After many weeks of use my original opinion still stands. Windows 8 without a touch screen to use Modern UI is rubbish. But with a touchscreen Desktop is rubbish because a mouse works way way better. Sorry, MS, you effed up here.

Windows 8 with stardock start8 is like windows 7 on juice, I'm even using it the office (I work in an enterprise of thousands of employees) and it's stable, fast, and packs some new features and the best compatibility I have experienced in any OS ever.

For me the biggest problem with Windows8 is that phone and tablet has different stores and you don't get universal apps for both.
Developers have to register for two stores so that is like $400 yearly in total.

Since iOS has universal apps I think Microsoft will fix this the question is just when but IMO it is a big mistake Microsoft made.

They removed it for heaven knows what reason. Struggled to connect my new wireless printer because I couldn't setup an ad hoc network...
Bloody frustrating - they should bring it back!
