The Jeep Cherokee Thread

Cherokee Nation asks Jeep to rename its midsize SUV

The Cherokee Nation in the US has asked for its tribal name to be removed as a nameplate from Jeep SUVs, while also calling for a dialogue with the carmaker on "cultural appropriateness."

The Native American group's principal chief Chuck Hoskin Jr told Jeep's parent company Stellantis that "he does not condone" the use of the name Cherokee on the vehicles, according to a statement.

Hoskin made the comments last month in response to an inquiry from Car & Driver and subsequently held a Zoom call with representatives of the carmaker, who had contacted him, the group said.

"I think we're in a day and age in this country where it's time for both corporations and team sports to retire the use of Native American names, images and mascots from their products, team jerseys and sports in general," Hoskin said in his initial statement.

Jeep Responds To The Cherokee Nation With A Really Bad Non-Answer

The disagreement between Jeep and the Cherokee Nation over the use of the Cherokee nameplate for its SUVs is far from over.

The carmaker responded on Wednesday to the Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. in a statement. Jeep replied to Chief Hoskin’s suggestion that the carmaker find a more suitable and less offensive name for its Cherokee SUVs with the following, per the New York Times:

Our vehicle names have been carefully chosen and nurtured over the years to honor and celebrate Native American people for their nobility, prowess and pride[.] We are, more than ever, committed to a respectful and open dialogue with Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr.

That moment when the original Jeep Cherokee was able to outperform a VW Golf 2 GTI 2.0 16V on a test track... Watch the outro to see just how to REALLY drive the doors off a 4x4 SUV 'Hot Hatch' when 'canyon carving' on a twisty mountain road... 😛

The XJ Jeep Cherokee was America's Favorite Hot Hatch — Full History — Revelations w/ Jason Cammisa

This is the full story of the Jeep Cherokee — the surprisingly French, world's-first 5-door, unit-body compact SUV. — responsible for cementing the recipe for today's most popular body style.Meant to replace the full-size "SJ" Jeep Wagoneer (later known as the Grand Wagoneer,) the XJ (for "Experimental Jeep") did something no other "four-wheel-drive" had: prioritized efficiency, ergonomics, and on-road driving dynamics.

It was 21 inches shorter, 6 inches narrower, and 1000 lb lighter than the SJ, but had 90% as much interior volume. With an innovative new 2.5-liter four-cylinder, it was vastly quicker and more efficient, too.

At the time of its late development, American Motors Corporation (AMC) was owned by the French company Renault, which certainly had an influence in the soft ride and adept handling.

And also the styling — done in America, and certainly influenced by both the Land Rover Range Rover (Classic), which in turn had been influenced by the SJ Wagoneer. (To say nothing of the Mercedes G-Wagen, which also looked similar.)

The incredibly award-winning XJ did it all, including straight-line speed, when it inherited Jeep's new 4.0-liter iron-block straight-six.

Its 190 hp was the most in all SUV-land, and was enough to easily out-drag the then-new 2.0-liter, 16-valve, top-spec Volkswagen GTI 16V.

The XJ was a massive commercial success across the globe. Both for Jeep, but also for the rest of the industry, which took the recipe and ran with it. Today, half of all cars produced around the world are SUVs — a formula that started here.

Here’s your first look at the new sixth-gen Jeep Cherokee

The famous name is back for 2026 with a new face and a platform

Welcome to the new Jeep Cherokee, the sixth generation of a nameplate that stretches back to the early Seventies, revealed here ahead of a full launch later this year. It'll go on sale in 2026.

It'll be underpinned by the STLA Large platform shared among other big-boned Stellantis SUVs. That architecture is built to accommodate multiple powertrains, ranging from pure ICE, to hybrid, to full-electric. Jeep hasn't said exactly what'll power the new Cherokee just yet, but there will be... power.

The sixth-gen gets Jeep’s familiar grille - echoed across the range as in the Compass and Wagoneer - with chunkier, squared-off headlights and bold vents on either side of the lower central mesh too. Looks fairly robust so far, at least.

Jeep reckons this new Cherokee will be competitively priced to sit between the Compass and Grand Cherokee models. More details when we get it.
