The law and logs?

Whats the law about mail and web server logs? Are you required by law to keep them? Does the same law apply to mail and www servers?

If you do have to keep them, for how long do you have to keep them?

Are you allowed to run your servers with 0 logging?

I don't actively work with logs but have noticed on a lot of websites the oldest entry is rarely more than a week old.
