DRIVEN: Lexus adds hybrid model to stunning IS range

Lexus is not an unfamiliar moniker to South Africans and its products are great with a reputable reputation for being reliable, luxurious and green-friendly; hence the automaker’s decision to expand its stunning IS range with the introduction of a hybrid variant.

Lexus is one of a few manufacturers to have a hybrid variant for each of its model ranges. This latest addition to its green-friendly fleet will greatly support its aim to be one of the world’s leading hybrid vehicle producers.

Value for money

In 2013 Lexus introduced the first hybrid model to the IS range, with small alterations introduced in 2016/17 to keep the vehicle fresh for the last phase of its life-cycle.

READ: Luxury Lexus ES arrives in SA: New design, better driving performance

That cycle is ending this week with the introduction of the new and revised IS hybrid model. Sporting a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre petrol engine, the IS 300h is available only in SE trim level and does it feature a strong specifications list to boost its value-for-money proposition in our market.

Interestingly, Lexus South Africa says that, globally, Toyota/Lexus they’ve sold more than 12-million hybrid vehicles since 1997 when the Toyota Prius was first introduced and that last year they sold a staggering 1.5 million hybrid vehicles.

These are amazing figures and underlines Toyota/Lexus’ 50% market share of hybrid vehicles sold globally. Guess that it only makes sense then for the automaker to introduce hybrid models to our market.

Sporty design

The IS 300h has the same design language as the rest of the IS range, with only a few alterations made to the package for a bit of diversity.

Design-wise Lexus’ new grille that fans out like an hourglass has been retained, but the diagonal bars running across it sees a 3D effect added to it. The side inlets on the front bumper have been widened, with daytime-running LEDs fitted as standard below the headlights.

Added to the package is a sunroof, but in Lexus terms, it’s a moonroof. However you want to call it, the mechanism used to operate it has been altered for a quieter sound when in operation and the glass itself will reduce 96% of harmful UV rays.

To differentiate the hybrid model from the rest of the range, the rear bumper sees the exhaust hidden behind the bodywork and the design of said bumper taking on an arch-like trait. The petrol models (no diesel will be added) sees the exhaust outlets quite evidently and the rear diffuser features an unmissable design.

A choice of nine exterior colours is available to choose from, with Black, Titanium and Grey being new additions to the range

Interior & Tech

Those familiar with Lexus' products will not find the interior unfamiliar but will instead see their hands gliding over the dials and switches as if by instinct.

Atop the dashboard sits a colour screen from which all relevant information is relayed and in front of the driver the information cluster for all driving information.

The controls and dials are ergonomically designed but the pad from which to operate and access settings are too sensitive. This is a different take to what the IS’ German rivals are offering but should users find their way with and around this feature after some time.

The interior can be decked in a choice of leathery options, which are Chateau, Nuance Black, Noble Brown, and Black. Each colour scheme will see the seats and door inserts dressed in the driver's chosen option. The front seats feature both heaters and coolers, can be operated electronically, and have memory options as standard

In terms of technology, the IS 300h comes standard with Lexus Safety System and, in addition, pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, automatic high beam, and blind spot monitor. The package is further enhanced with 17" run flat tyres; this to accommodate the battery for electric power.

Hybrid powertrain

The hybrid’s engine delivers a power output of 133kW and 221Nm, but when the electric motor/battery kicks its power is upped to 164kW. Torque remains unchanged. An eight-speed CVT gearbox channels power to the wheels.

In order to drive in EV (electric vehicle) mode, the battery needs to have enough power to propel the car forward. This mode works best in traffic or when the vehicle is moving at a slow pace and the accelerator is not pressed too deep; otherwise, it’ll switch over to normal (read: petrol) mode.

In EV mode, the car produces no sound and it is almost eerie. At least there's self-gratification to be had knowing that you’re saving the planet kilometre after kilometre - the claimed fuel economy for this car is 5.0-l/100km and the C02 is only 117g/km.

Three driving modes - Eco, Normal, Sport - can be accessed easily with the dial of a knob and alters the responsiveness of the vehicle accordingly.

The steering is good when just plodding along, but feels vague and numb when going around bends at speeds, but that is somewhat pushed to the back of your mind by the fact that the chassis feels assured and sturdy. The overall drive in the IS 300h is quite well and apart from some wind noise at the rear windows, cabin quietness also sees a thumbs up.

Summary

With a price tag of R753 800, the Lexus IS 300h is not a cheap car, but it has all the bells and whistles you’d come to expect from a premium manufacturer. For the most part, the car is better kitted than its rivals and is the only option you have to spec the colour you want your IS 300h to be in, according to a colleague.

It is rare that a premium manufacturer offers you such a comprehensive package and does it almost seem as if you should look twice in case you missed something. But you’re not and does the car come standard with a seven-year/105 000km warranty and full maintenance plan which, Lexus says, is the best in its class.

DRIVEN: Lexus IS300h

Globally, the majority of automakers have shown or are showing some sort of interest in electrification. But here in South Africa that’s largely not been the case thanks to pricing and infrastructure considerations (although that appears to be slowly changing with the likes of the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron headed to local shores). Still, with fuel costs taking a hefty bite out of the average SA motorist’s monthly income, is it time we start seriously considering electrification?

Well, Lexus South Africa certainly thinks so … and has done so for some time now. And although it’s not a plug-in solution, the newly added IS300h – which joins the brand’s growing stable of hybrids – still offers the potential of frugality, with its 2,5-litre four-cylinder engine (designed specifically for hybrid use) delivering power to the rear axle via a continuously variable transmission (its petrol-powered siblings, meanwhile, each employ an eight-speed torque converter).

In the IS300h, this hybrid powertrain serves up a suitably relaxed driving experience, with the petrol engine and electric motor working well together and providing its power without much of that dreaded CVT drone. Indeed, much like those in other Japanese vehicles we’ve sampled this year, this transmission comes across as a vast improvement over earlier examples.

The IS300h features three distinct driving modes – eco, normal and sport – with each simply adjusting the sensitivity of the throttle. An EV-mode is also available, but it functions only at speeds below 60 km/h once the battery is sufficiently charged.

Interestingly, I didn’t really feel compelled to explore the IS300h’s dynamic limits, despite the sedan employing the same engaging chassis we’ve become quite fond of in the IS350 F-Sport. Everything from the ride to the steering feel has seemingly been tweaked to render the IS300h as relaxing to drive as possible (something that may endear it to older consumers). The ride is particularly impressive considering the vehicle uses run-flat tyres, which have attracted a bad reputation when it comes to comfort.

With the IS range selling in relatively low numbers locally against its mainstream competitors, there’s no denying this new hybrid version is a niche product. Indeed, it’s going to be a tough sell here in South Africa, despite offering the potential of low fuel consumption (with a claimed figure of 5,0 L/100 km), generous standard specification and a comfortable ride.

While a price of R753 800 may at first seem large, it’s worth noting the IS300h undercuts the BMW 330e plug-in hybrid while also offering a lengthy seven-year maintenance plan and an impressive catalogue of safety features, including adaptive cruise control and active emergency braking.

Sure, it likely won’t prove very popular with South Africa’s infamously brand loyal buyers (particularly in the compact sedan segment), but Lexus SA should be commended for offering the IS300h as yet another interesting vehicle in a long line of hybrid alternatives … just as other brands start their local push towards electrification.

Lexus launches IS 300h as part of hybrid push in SA

Lexus South Africa launched the IS 300h (in SE trim) in Johannesburg on Wednesday. It joins a refined range of IS models that now consists of the IS 300 EX, IS 300h SE and IS 350 F Sport.

You might be wondering, like I did, why the Japanese carmaker chose to launch a hybrid version of its compact luxury sedan (which is already a bit long in the tooth compared to its new - forthcoming- chief rivals from Stuttgart and Munich). I mean, Lexus already sells the larger, newer ES sedan in hybrid guise already.

The answer is actually quite simple... hybrid cars are the future for the brand and the offering must swell.

Lexus SA’s Clynton Yon, speaking at the launch event, said that South Africans can look forward to an array of new hybrid models from the company in the course of 2019 and beyond.

It makes sense that Lexus forges ahead as purveyors of luxury hybrids in SA, as an alternative to diesel cars, as its petrol-electric cars are actually quite solid, responsive and a pleasure to drive within the confines of city traffic once you get used to the CVT gearboxes they are fitted with. If you’re an eco-type, this company makes your your kind of cars.

Incentives in other parts of the world make Lexus hybrid cars a no-brainer for many commuters, families and businesses. From tax rebates to purchase price concessions from government, markets such as the UK and USA are moving forward in terms of hybrids on the road and Lexus SA says it’s time South Africa caught up. To this end, together with introducing a hybrid version of every single one of its models, Lexus is looking to introduce a variety of specification levels. ‘Entry-level’ hybrids if you will, to ensure that people who are looking at buying their first premium car consider consider a hybrid ahead of something from Germany, for example.

So what’s this new IS 300h petrol-electric car all about? Let’s peek under its hood and skin.

DIZZYING TECH

The IS 300h features a naturally aspirated, four-cylinder 2.5-litre engine that produces 133kW at 6000rpm and 221Nm between 4200rpm and 5400rpm.

The engine boasts Atkinson cycle combustion characteristics and D-4S fuel injection with Dual VVT-i intelligent variable valve timing. It also employs high-efficiency exhaust gas recirculation technologies.

The gasoline engine is mated to a 650-volt permanent-magnet, synchronous electric motor, producing 105kW of maximum power.

Before you get all giddy, like I did, at the thought of a 200+kW car here, the electric motor and petrol engine combo delivers drive to the wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

The actual combined power output of the IS 300h is therefore rated at 164kW, but its (claimed) carbon emissions is what’s most impressive a 104g/km.

In terms of performance, it’ll sprint to 100km/h from a standstill in a claimed 8.5 seconds before reaching an electronically governed maximum velocity of 200km/h.

As with all Lexus self-charging hybrids, the IS 300h can be driven in petrol-electric or pure electric (EV) modes at slower traffic speeds.

SAFETY ORIENTED

If you’re looking for a vehicle that comes standard with all sorts of safety kit, this is the car for you. The IS 300h SE is fitted with Lexus’ Safety Pack+ which includes the following items:

Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert: Provides the driver with warnings of potentially unseen hazards, while LED headlights provide a deeper and wider field of illumination for night-time driving.

Lane Keep Assist: Designed to recognise when the vehicle deviates from its lane (hello all you lane-changers that don’t indicate). In essence, the system will self-steer the vehicle safely back to its ‘correct’ path. Lexus says this only works at very low vehicle speeds, though.

Pre-Crash Safety System: Like Pre-Safe in a Merc, this system is designed to detect the risk of an impact and operating in unison with warning and braking systems, aims to lessen the damage sustained in a collision. It scrubs data from a forward recognition camera and radar sensor. If it determines that the possibility of an accident is high, pre-crash warning control and pre-crash brake assist control are initiated. If a collision is imminent, pre-crash braking control will be engaged -to help reduce the impact of the collision or help avoid it.

LED Headlights with Auto High Beam: Alluded to earlier, the IS 300h’s headlights feature LED tech. An Adaptive High-beam System provides optimal lighting, giving finer control of lighting strength and distance, allowing for the car to be driven for longer on high-beam without dazzling vehicles ahead or oncoming traffic.

Adaptive Cruise Control: The car’s front-facing radar and camera are also used to provide Adaptive Cruise Control. This system can help you maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Once the way ahead is clear, the IS will automatically accelerate smoothly back to its pre-set cruising speed; if the car has been brought to a halt, you only have to press the accelerator briefly to reactivate the system.

LUXURIOUS APPOINTMENTS

Like we’ve come to expect from a luxury car maker such as Lexus, the interior of the new IS 300h is impressive, if a little busy in terms of hotkey layout on the dashboard and centre console. Look beyond the busy nature of its design on the inside, though, and you’ll be impressed at the levels of kit that come standard.

The IS 300h is fitted with premium ‘soft’ leather and a large 26cm high-resolution monitor that operates in conjunction with Lexus’ Remote Touch Interface for the multimedia system. You get satellite navigation too, and voice control, although the voice control in our car didn’t recognise my co-driver's inputs. He asked for ‘The Saxon’, our launch venue, and the car kept asking him if he wanted to go ice skating...eventually routing us to a rink in Krugersdorp.

Apart from the voice control follies, worthy of special mention is the laser-etched, dark wood trim inserts with aluminium pinstriping. This unique feature is exclusive to the IS 300h and the flagship IS 350 F Sport model (and Lexus RX). Anoraks will love the fact that this trim piece is produced for Lexus by skilled craftspeople at Yamaha Fine Technologies; made using a technique applied in the manufacture of some of the world’s finest musical instruments.

Oh, and you get a moonroof (sunroof) too.

THREE CAR LINE-UP

The refined Lexus IS range now kicks off with the IS 300 EX model that features a 2.0-litre twin-scroll turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with intercooler. It produces 180kW and 350Nm. Variable Valve Timing intelligent – Wide (VVTi-W) allows the engine to switch between the Otto and Atkinson cycles to maximise efficiency. Its trick D-4ST fuel injection system also combines a high-pressure direct fuel injection system with a low-pressure port-injection system.

Then, the flagship IS 350 F Sport comes with a 3.5-litre V6 engine that produces 233kW and 378Nm, driving the rear wheels via an an eight-speed automatic transmission.

A Drive Mode Select system (across the range) features up to four driving modes to tailor the car’s combination of economy, comfort, performance and handling characteristics.

Lexus has expanded the customer care offering for all IS models, giving customers a standard seven-year/105 000km warranty and full maintenance plan. Vehicle service intervals are at every 15 000km, alternatively once a year.

Next-gen Lexus IS to use BMW engine, suggests report

It’s no secret the new Toyota Supra is powered by a BMW-sourced inline six-cylinder engine. But now a fresh report out of Japan suggests the next-generation Lexus IS sedan will also inherit the Bavarian brand’s B58 unit.

According to Best Car, the upcoming fourth-generation IS sedan will be offered with a version of BMW’s turbocharged 3,0-litre straight-six, which also powers the new Z4 roadster and M340i sedan. The report furthermore suggests Toyota’s luxury arm will also offer 2,0- and 2,4-litre engines lower in the IS range, along with a 2,5-litre hybrid powertrain option.

And what about the flagship IS F? Well, Best Car claims the high-performance variant will draw its urge from a version of the turbocharged 3,5-litre V6 already used in the LS saloon, where it makes 310 kW and 600 N.m.

The Japanese publication furthermore says that while the next-generation IS will be around the same size as the current model, it will lose as much as 150 kg.

Expect Lexus to whip the covers off the new model at some point towards the end of 2020.

Lexus postpones new IS reveal due to 'recent global situation'

Lexus was due to reveal the latest IS, which isn't coming to Europe, later today, but the debut has been postponed indefinitely

Lexus has postponed the reveal of its new IS saloon indefinitely due to "the recent global situation", the company has confirmed.

A statement released by the Japanese maker today said "Considering the recent global situation, Lexus has respectfully postponed the premiere of the new IS, which was originally scheduled for 8:00 a.m. Japan Standard Time, June 10. Revised timing will be announced soon."

A more specific reason isn't listed, but it's likely to be a combination of the global pandemic and recent anti-racism protests across the world.

Lexus has so far only released a teaser image for the model. The low-resolution, darkened shot, posted on the brand's Facebook page last week, shows the rear end of the new BMW 3 Series rival and reveals it features a full-width lighting strip, much like the UX crossover.

However, Autocar has been told that the model won't be sold in either the European market or the UK.

Lexus IS

Writing yet another chapter in the book of compact luxury sports sedans, the new 2021 Lexus IS was unveiled via a unique and engaging online virtual reveal. Since its debut nearly 20 years ago in the U.S., the IS has thrived on creating exhilarating driving performance in the form of a true rear-wheel-drive luxury sports sedan. The IS has served as a whetstone to help sharpen Lexus driving performance across the lineup but, more directly, it has forged indelible bonds between driver and machine that reach into the hundreds of thousands. It's no wonder the Lexus IS has earned worldwide adoration for its extraordinary driving performance.

There may be no greater fan of IS than Toyota President Akio Toyoda, who notes the vehicle's special place in his heart during the introduction to the Art of Lexus book, where he credits the IS as "The car that really taught me what performance driving was, and it was the moment when my love affair with Lexus began."

The new 2021 Lexus IS, which is expected to arrive in dealerships in late fall of 2020, looks to expand upon the legacy it has carved out in the compact luxury sports car segment over the previous two decades. Truly a global vehicle, it will be available for sale in approximately 40 countries around the world, including the US, Japan, and other countries in Asia.

Revised Lexus IS range officially revealed

Lexus has unveiled a reworked version of its IS, which will arrive in South Africa early next year. Its rivals may have become inoffensively-styled and comfort-oriented, but the bold new Japanese business-class sedan still prioritises distinctiveness... and driving dynamics.

The new iteration of the IS is claimed to “continue in the finest handling-led traditions” of its predecessors and is apparently the first Lexus model to incorporate the Japanese premium marque’s Driving Signature, which is set to become the development standard for all of the brand’s future products.

That "Lexus Driving Signature" is defined by the brand as “linear vehicle operation that is faithful to a driver's intentions, providing a seamless transition from braking to steering and acceleration through a corner”; the direct translation is admittedly a little wordier than “the way a balanced, sweet-handling driver’s car is supposed to be”.

To that end, this iteration of the (still rear-wheel-drive) IS sedan was honed at various facilities throughout the world, including Toyota’s new Technical Centre in Shimoyama. Its eminently distinctive exterior design is characterised by a sharp detailing, sleek proportions and wide, low stance, while the model features a host of advanced safety technologies, such as an evolved version of Lexus Safety System+.

New Lexus IS features fresh styling, new tech and enhanced chassis

Saloon is heavily updated but sits on same platform and uses same engines. It won't be sold in Europe

Lexus has officially revealed its 2021 IS as an extensively updated version of today's compact executive saloon.

The BMW 3 Series rival will now only be sold in the US, Japan and other Asian markets, with no European or UK debut on the cards. Lexus UK claims the newer and larger ES saloon outsells the IS by two to one, while 80% of the brand's European sales are of SUVs.

The new IS features an exterior redesign inspired by the look of the ES. It's 30mm longer and 30mm wider than its predecessor, with extended wheel arches to accommodate bigger 19in wheel options.

Lexus claims the widened and lowered stance "nods to the inherently high level of driving performance the IS possesses", while additional styling lines aim to enhance visual aggression. F-Sport models feature a unique version of the car's 3D spindle grille, using a mesh pattern and adding a lower air intake.
