The Linux alternative to Windows 10

You won't need to worry about malware or spyware when using Zorin OS. This is thanks to Linux's advanced security features which help make it immune to PC viruses.

Last time I checked - The above is no longer true.

If you are looking to move from Windows 10 to a secure open-source operating system and don’t want to learn a new interface, BetaNews has suggested you try Linux-based Zorin OS.

Features of the OS include Google Drive integration
:crylaugh:

It looks pretty and I know Linux has come a long way in terms of support for games and stuff like that, so I will run this in dual boot for a week or two and try to use it as my primary OS for that time to see how much I need to switch to Windows for various things.

Yeah Linux and Windows are kind of on the same level when it comes to viruses and spyware so that statement hasn't been true for quite some time.

Linux mint??? Good alternative to windows imho

Peppermint OS

Using Peppermint OS 7 at the moment, dual-booting with Win7 on a spare laptop. Very stable with minimal 'bloatware' on installation.

This review was a fun one as Peppermint is unique in several ways and it is nice to see the efforts that were put into the themeing and the combination of desktop features. Peppermint is based off of Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

I must say, this Zorin OS 12 is the most attractive Linux OS I've yet seen. Really slick.

15 Euros for the premium version? R350? Is that really worth it?

It's pretty hard to find out what you get with the Ultimate edition. Their website gives almost no info (may need to scroll sideways):

As far as I can tell, you're paying them to preinstall a bunch of free Linux apps and for more theme customisation.

And that's mostly where these articles always lose the plot.

There is nothing special or unique about any of these OS's and you can make any of them into any other one of them if you were that way inclined.

Unlike Windows the Window Manager is completely disconnected from the underlying OS and you can install whatever you want on whatever base system you choose.

And it doesn't matter how you cut it...you will need to learn a new interface.

Great place to recommend a distro for one that would like support for as many Linux games as possible.

Assuming SteamOS isn't ready for full time home use.

What industry are you in?

What is the computer literacy level of your staff and what sort of tasks are they doing?

Insurance - and the nature of these positions has them entering data on a web-based CRM so all they need is a browser. Zorin + Firefox + Thunderbird = they can work.

Literacy is from never used before all the way to highly proficient.

Interesting thanks. Not often you here of office workers using Linux in a deployment of such size, unless its been heavily customized like I think some of the banks do?

I suppose the whole web-based thing helps a lot. Has it had a noticeable cost-benefit?

Only ask because it sounds like a good strategy for a start-up trying to get off the ground.

So a few years ago we were a start-up. And this strategy has had a huge impact in costs. If you take the number of users and multiply just by the cost of Windows, you can already see the difference. Add in Outlook and it is a no-brainer. The cost benefit is huge. And you're right - web-based helps everything.
