Cape Town - What started out as a joke may soon become a reality as rugby administrators from Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth are locked in negotiations to field a team called the Lion Kings, that represents both regions, in next year’s Super Rugby competition.

Lions president Kevin de Klerk and Southern Kings boss Cheeky Watson have both publicly denied talk of a merger between the two teams, but sources with insight into the talks have confirmed that both parties are exploring all avenues to avoid the prospect of relegation.

The Kings are currently in last place in the SA conference and they cannot avoid a home-and-away play-off against the Lions to retain their place in the competition for 2014.

Super Rugby’s current 15-team format will be in place until 2016, and the winner of the play-off series is thus only guaranteed a place in the competition for one season.

WTF the Lion Kings? Seriously?! Couldn't they have thought of a cheesier name?

The Simbas? Or the King Lions? Southern Lions could work I guess.

Aside from the laughable name this is geographically retarded.

If they want to keep the Kings in the competition then the Lions should move in with the Cheetahs again and run out as the Cats.

I was more a fan of the Bullions idea but there is no way in hell the BBRU would do it.
