The man who built Mxit

Mxit brought people together. Not sure if this was the first app to bring people to together at the pace it did in SA. You could literally chat with someone in the morning and meetup with them later in the day. Worked for me, met some crazy people via this app.

Skipped it ...

I have friends who met on Mxit, started dating (in 2006), got married in 2012 and are still together in 2024.

how else would a super shy Afrikaans man who literally could not talk to women out loud meet an extroverted Indian Girl with tattoos?

Still his best sale:
At Mxit’s height, Heunis decided to step back from his wildly successful company, selling it to World of Avatar in September 2011.

Founded by Alan Knott-Craig Jr., World of Avatar was backed by former FirstRand executives Paul Harris and GT Ferreira.

BBM (Blackberry messenger) murdered Mxit. Whatsapp murdered BBM. Telegram got framed and arrested for the crimes.
BBM would never have been successful if data prices were more reasonable back in the day. Especially OOB Shark

So I would argue that Vodacom and MTN murdered mixit.

Didn’t know we were friends?

I met my now-wife on Mxit in late 2006, in one of the Tech chatrooms of all places.
