Mercedes C-Class gets major design and tech overhaul for 2027
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has been given a major update that is far more than just skin-deep, with the sedan and estate receiving significant design changes, new AI-powered cabin technology, and engine and chassis enhancements.
Due to reach South Africa in 2027, the reworked C-Class receives a significantly larger illuminated grille that brings it into line with the recently revealed electric version of the C-Class. Like its EV sibling, it also features star motifs in the headlights, while resculpted front and rear bumpers set it apart further.
The updated range also introduces new 18-inch and 19-inch wheel options, as well as two new exterior paint colours in the form of Lavender Silver and Moody Sky Grey.
The cabin retains its familiar architecture, including the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 11.9-inch vertical display, but the steering wheel has been given a fresh design and now sports physical rocker switches and volume rollers. Customers can also look forward to new upholstery colours, such as Beech Brown and Cherry Red, along with new trim choices.
But the technology has changed in a big way, with the updated C-Class featuring the fourth-generation MBUX interface and MB.OS operating system.
Here, the car’s ‘virtual assistant’ uses a combination of AI agents, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Microsoft Bing, to deliver a highly personalised, conversational and context-aware driving experience. The assistant can now also remember short-term context across a conversation.

Mercedes announces cheaper all-electric C300 with 690 km range and AWD
The electric Mercedes C-Class debuted back in April, with only the C400 4MATIC available initially. Today, the company unveiled the C300 4MATIC and made it available for order as well. It's a more affordable version with four-wheel-drive, but slightly lower power output and battery capacity. Notably, the company also promised a rear-wheel drive option (C300+) in the future with a cruising range of around 800 km.
The C300 4MATIC comes with an 85 kWh battery, a step down from the 94 kWh Li-NMC battery pack inside the C400 model, but it's still good enough for 690 km on a single charge on the WLTP cycle. The 800-volt platform allows the battery to be charged at up to 320 kW on a suitable DC charger, adding 290 km of range in 10 minutes.
The combined output of the front and rear electric motors is 416 hp and 800 Nm of torque, which is not far from the C400's 483 hp under the hood.
