The facelift of the W205 C-Class.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Now in its fifth year of production, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is the most successful model series from Mercedes-Benz and boasts a wealth of enhancements. The design of the exterior and interior benefits from a stylish makeover. The electronic architecture is completely new. Options include a fully digital instrument display and multimedia systems featuring customised information and music offerings. The assistance systems likewise benefit from the new electronic architecture and are now on a par with those of the S-Class.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class in its current generation was Mercedes-Benz's top-selling model in its fourth year on sale. The brand sold a combined total of over 415,000 Saloon and Estate models worldwide in 2017.

The new-look C-Class combines emotionality with intelligence. The vehicle's new appearance is defined in particular by its front end and the design of the headlamps and tail lights. On the new version, the AMG Line features the diamond radiator grille as standard. The front bumpers have been redesigned for all lines. They feature either a silver trim strip (standard), a chrome-plated trim strip (in combination with AVANTGARDE exterior) or a three-part chrome trim strip (EXCLUSIVE exterior).

The design of the front and rear lamps is defined by clear-lined contours. High-quality, sculpted details underline the sophisticated look and feel. MULTIBEAM LED headlamps with ULTRA RANGE high beam are available for this model series for the first time.

The sporty interior displays a premium look and feel as well as flowing forms. The centre console is characterised by an elegant flowing trim. This is available in open-pore brown walnut or open-pore anthracite oak. The 3D real wood veneer in the centre console combines a hand-crafted character with a modern feel. New interior colours include magma grey/black, plus saddle brown for the AMG Line interior.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class adopts the control and display concept from the current S-Class and comes with the option of a fully digital instrument display with three individually selectable display styles. The C-Class has touch-sensitive controls in the steering wheel. The operation of DISTRONIC and cruise control with controls directly on the steering wheel is another new feature. The infotainment system can additionally be operated via the touchpad with controller (new: haptic feedback) in the centre console or by means of LINGUATRONIC voice control.

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class features the latest driving assistance systems, offering the driver cooperative support and providing for a higher standard of active safety than its predecessor. The C-Class is able to drive semi-autonomously in certain situations. The C-Class also uses map and navigation data for assistance functions. For example, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC as part of the Driving Assistance package is able to support the driver in numerous situations on the basis of map information and predictively adjust the speed e.g. when approaching bends, junctions or roundabouts. Other new developments include intuitively understandable Active Lane Change Assist and Active Emergency Stop Assist as new functions of Active Steering Assist.

The optionally available MULTIBEAM LED headlamps are new to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. Each headlamp incorporates 84 individually controllable LEDs. These allow extremely quick and precise, electronically controlled adjustment of the headlamps to suit the current traffic situation.

ENERGIZING comfort control (optional) links various comfort systems in the vehicle. It systematically uses the functions of the climate control system (including fragrancing) and the seats (heater, ventilation, massage) as well as lighting and musical moods, and enables a specific wellness set-up tailored to the mood and need of the customer. This has positive effects on wellbeing and driver performance.

2018 Mercedes-Benz C-Class introduces EQ Power hybrid tech

Revised C-Class gets petrol and diesel hybrid powertrains alongside extensive interior upgrades

Mercedes-Benz is set to introduce two plug-in hybrids to its facelifted C-Class line-up as part of plans for an extended range of EQ-Power-badged models.

The electrified drivetrains are based around a new hybrid system. It operates in combination with a four-cylinder petrol engine in the new C300e and a four-cylinder diesel engine in the C300de.

The new EQ-Power system increases the output of the electric motor by 40bhp over that used by the existing four-year-old 300h to 120bhp.

The two new hybrids’ electric range will extend to more than 19 miles, thanks to the lithium ion battery’s capacity rising from 6.4kWh to 13.8kWh.

Mercedes is remaining tight-lipped about the combined system outputs for the new C300e and C300de. However, the C330e’s turbo 2.0-litre engine is claimed to deliver 208bhp and the C300de’s turbo 2.0-litre engine 191bhp.

The two plug-in hybrids will go on sale in the UK later this year as part of a facelifted C-Class line-up that will make its public debut in saloon and estate bodystyles at the Geneva motor show in March.

The revisions include a number of subtle styling upgrades, including reprofiled bumpers with added chrome highlights, new headlights and a new diamond-pattern grille insert for AMG Line models.

Inside, the facelifted C-Class retains the basic dashboard design of the outgoing model, together with updated analogue instruments and a 7.0in infotainment display.

Optional equipment includes a new 12.3in high-definition digital instrument display offering three themes (Classic, Sport and Progressive), a revised multi-function steering wheel with touch-control pads, a 10.25in free-standing infotainment display and a touchpad controller within a reworked centre console. The C-Class’s Comand infotainment system has been upgraded to the same standard as that used by the facelifted S-Class. However, it forgoes the touchscreen control and connectivity functions of the more advanced system in the new A-Class.

The C-Class also gets optional smartphone integration supporting Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink, as well as a wireless charging pad. It will also be offered with new remote parking pilot and driving assistance package plus systems.

The facelifted C-Class will have three diesel models: the 148bhp C200d, 192bhp C220d and 241bhp C300d. Each runs Mercedes’ latest 2.0-litre four- cylinder diesel engine.

Three petrol models feature in the line-up: the C180, C200 and C300. The C180 uses a 1.6-litre turbo engine that produces 154bhp in the SLC180. The C200 and C300 both have Mercedes’ new four-cylinder petrol engine.

In the C200, a mild hybrid with EQ-Boost badging, the engine delivers a nominal 188bhp, with an added 17bhp available on kickdown when the alternator acts as an electric motor to boost performance.

In the C300, it gets a higher state of tune at 241bhp, but no electric assistance.

The facelifted C-Class will be sold in three trim levels – SE, Sport and AMG Line – and Mercedes says the new entry- level SE spec will be higher than today’s. Prices will start from £30,000 when UK sales begin in March, with first deliveries scheduled for August.

Facelifted Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan unveiled…

The folks over at Mercedes-Benz are gearing up for a particularly busy Geneva International Motor Show in March, preparing to show off the new-generation A-Class, latest Mercedes-AMG G63, revised Mercedes-Maybach S-Class and the highly anticipated GT Coupé, too. But the Stuttgart-based brand will have another rather important vehicle in attendance: the facelifted C-Class sedan.

Yes, the vehicle that the automaker bills as its “most successful model series” (it was Mercedes-Benz’s top-selling model in its fourth year on sale in 2017) has been given a makeover, inside and out. In addition, yet more semi-autonomous technology has trickled down to the premium sedan (which, of course, is built in East London, South Africa) from the flagship S-Class.

The refreshed C-Class gains a new front end, complete with redesigned headlamps (now optionally available in Multibeam LED form). Models equipped with the AMG Line (as seen in the images above) feature a diamond-pattern grille as standard.

The revised front bumper now features a silver trim strip in standard form, a chrome-plated trim strip in Avantgarde exterior guise or a three-part chrome trim strip in Exclusive specification. And the tail-lamps have been updated, too, with the rear bumper boasting a new lower section (geometry, trim and tailpipe trim will vary according to the selected equipment and engine variant).

Inside, new colour combinations are offered, while the C-Class now also comes with the option of a 12,3-inch, fully digital instrument display, with three individually selectable styles. Touch-sensitive controls have been added to the steering wheel, along with new buttons for the operation of the cruise control system (these were previously housed on a satellite stalk behind the wheel). And the touchpad with controller in the centre console now features haptic feedback.

No official word yet on whether this facelift will include any powertrain revisions, but early rumours suggest the C-Class will inherit new engines from the E-Class range, along with fresh hybrid options. Stay tuned for more on that.

Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG 4Matic

With four body variants, three output levels and two drive types, the C-Class is the most versatile and most successful model series from Mercedes-AMG. Extensive measures now make the entry-level models, the C43 4Matic Saloon (combined fuel consumption: 9.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 209 g/km) and Estate (combined fuel consumption: 9.4 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 214 g/km1) even more attractive. The AMG radiator grille in a twin-louvre design, the powerfully sculpted front apron and the new rear apron with round twin tailpipe trim elements visibly enhance the new C43 models and give them an even more distinct positioning. The interior benefits from an optional fully digital cockpit with unmistakable AMG displays and the new generation of AMG steering wheels. The 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine now delivers 287 kW (390 hp). Together with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and rear-biased AMG Performance 4Matic all-wheel drive, the engine combines agile driving dynamics with comfort on long journeys.

"As the most successful model series for Mercedes-AMG, the C-Class family in all its facets has made a major contribution to our corporate success. One major component in this success story was the implementation of the 43-series models, which have thrilled our customers worldwide since the market launch in 2015. The high demand and positive feedback have encouraged us to sharpen up not only the appearance of the facelift, but also its performance, efficiency and dynamism in true AMG style," says Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

For this the AMG development engineers have increased the output of the 3.0-litre V6 engine by 17 kW (23 hp) to 287 kW (390 hp). The peak torque of 520 Nm is available from 2500 to 5000 rpm. This package guarantees impressive performance figures: the new C43 4Matic Saloon accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, and the Estate in 4.8 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic facelift revealed with 385bhp

Mercedes-AMG's warm V6 C-Class has received a bump in power and a facelift

Mercedes-AMG has provided the 2018-model-year C43 4Matic saloon and estate with a moderate increase in power through the adoption of a more powerful version of the German car maker’s turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine.

The reworked powerplant, which receives larger turbochargers operating at a maximum pressure of 1.1bar, forms part of a raft of mid-life changes for the popular C43 4Matic, bringing an added 23bhp to boost its reserves to 385bhp at 6100rpm. Torque, however, remains the same as before, continuing to peak at 383lb ft on a band of revs between 2500 and 500rpm.

Despite the increase in power, Mercedes-AMG does not claim any improvement in overall performance, with both the four-wheel drive C43 4Matic saloon and estate boasting the same official 0-62mph times as their predecessors at 4.7sec and 4.8sec respectively. At the same time, their top speeds remain limited to 155mph.

Revealed at the 2018 Geneva motor show, the facelifted C43 4Matic saloon and estate are also distinguished from the models they replace by a series of subtle exterior styling tweaks, including a new twin-blade grille, more heavily structured front bumper with an altered air duct design, a rear deck spoiler now in the same colour as the car, a reworked rear bumper with a larger diffuser and new look twin round chromed tailpipes.

As an option, buyers can also order the new models with an optional AMG styling package. It adds a splitter element within the front bumper, wider sills underneath the doors and an altered rear bumper.

In line with standard versions of the facelifted C-class, the new C43 4Matic saloon and estate also receive a updated interior with a digital instrument cluster and 12.3-inch Comand infotainment display – both featuring specific AMG menus.

Refreshed Mercedes-AMG C43 gets ... more power!

In February, Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off its facelifted C-Class. And now the German brand has revealed its updated C43 sedan, which gains styling tweaks and more power.

Thanks to yet more tinkering (primarily via the addition of larger turbochargers) from the folks over at Affalterbach, the 3,0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine now delivers 287 kW (up 17 kW from the 270 kW in the pre-facelift model) and an unchanged 520 N.m.

Interestingly, this maximum torque figure is offered between 2 500 and 5 000 r/min, whereas the outgoing model made its peak twisting force between 2 000 and 4 200 r/min. The Mercedes-AMG C43’s claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time is still 4,7 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

As before, the C43 employs the Stuttgart-based brand’s rear-biased 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, along with an AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission. A new, fifth driving mode called “Slippery” has also been added, and is specially programmed for slippery or snow-covered road conditions.

In terms of styling, the updated C43 gains the latest version of the AMG radiator grille with twin-louvre design in matte iridium silver along with a new front apron with additional “flics”. Round back, you’ll notice that a quartet of round tailpipes (in high-gloss chrome) replace the previous model’s angular elements. The rear apron has also been redesigned and a more aggressive diffuser adopted. New, “aerodynamically optimised” AMG light-alloy wheels have also been added.

Inside, a fully digital instrument cluster with 12,3-inch screen can be optionally specified. Mercedes-AMG has also added new steering wheel designs, complete with so-called “touch control” buttons first seen in the E-Class.

Mercedes-AMG C43 gets facelift, more power

The facelift that was announced for the C-Class range last month has now been applied to the Mercedes-AMG C43 model and it also brings more power to the party.

Although it doesn’t inherit Merc’s new straight-six as many fans might have hoped for, the current 3-litre twin-turbo V6 has been beefed up to the tune of 17kW, now producing 287kW, while peak torque remains at 520Nm. 0-100km/h comes up in 4.7 seconds, according to claims, while the top speed is limited to 250km/h.

As before, power is transferred to the road by a nine-speed automatic gearbox and rear-biased, AMG-tuned 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

Styling changes are subtle, with the C43 getting a new twin-louvre grille design upfront, finished in matt iridium silver, as well as new aprons front and back and two fresh alloy wheel designs. Buyers can opt for an AMG styling package that brings a more prominent front splitter, broader side skirts and a spoiler lip.

Moving inside, the C43 is now available with a 31.2cm digital instrument cluster, with three AMG-specific display modes. Unlike in the latest A and E-Class, the instrument and infotainment screens are not adjacent - instead the former is built into the deep-set instrument cowls to create a far sportier effect.

Also lifting the cabin ambience are a redesigned flat-bottom steering wheel, with galvanised gearshift paddles, and new dashboard trim elements, including open-pore oak wood and walnut and longitudinal-grain aluminium.

As for gadgets, the Track Pace system has been improved to provide keen drivers with even more dynamic data, including lap and sector times, and for less exciting situations the Energising Comfort Control system has been added to the options list, networking the various comfort systems including ventilation, lighting and music to create mood-specific wellness programmes.

The facelifted C-Class range is due to go on sale in South Africa around mid-year, with C43 models possibly following at a later stage.

New Engines For The Updated Mercedes-Benz C-Class

Ahead of the Geneva International Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz took the wraps off its facelifted C-Class (and then its updated Mercedes-AMG C43). And now that the sedan has enjoyed its premiere in the Swiss city, the Stuttgart-based automaker has revealed more details about the SA-built model’s refreshed engine line-up.

Mercedes says four engine options will be offered at launch (the local line-up, however, has yet to be announced), with further variants to follow at a later stage.

The first is the new C200, which employs a new-generation turbocharged 1,5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit worth 135 kW and 280 N.m (replacing the old 135 kW/300 N.m 2,0-litre of the outgoing model), mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The C200 is now equipped with an additional 48-volt onboard network with a belt-driven starter/alternator (technology Benz calls “EQ Boost”). A 160 N.m electric motor brings an extra 10 kW to the party to bridge “the brief moment” before the turbocharger has built up its full charge pressure.

This model’s 0-100 km/h sprint takes a claimed 7,7 seconds (topping out at 239 km/h), while fuel consumption comes in at 6,0 L/100 km. The C200 4Matic, meanwhile, adds all-wheel drive, hiking the listed fuel figure to 6,5 L/100 km and the claimed sprint time to 8,1 seconds.

Next is the new C220d, which now uses a 2,0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel heart (replacing the old 125 kW/400 N.m 2,1-litre oil-burner) sending 143 kW and 400 N.m to the rear wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox. The obligatory dash to three figures takes 6,9 seconds (and top speed is listed as 240 km/h), while claimed fuel economy is a mere 4,4 L/100 km.

Lastly, there’s the Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic, with its 287 kW/520 N.m 3,0-litre V6. As revealed in our earlier story, this model sees off the 0-100 km/h sprint in a claimed 4,7 seconds, and is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Mercedes-Benz says a new 2,0-litre petrol engine will follow, along with a plug-in diesel hybrid. Expect the updated C-Class to hit the South African market in the third quarter of 2018.

Facelifted Mercedes-Benz C-Class: What to Expect

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has received a tasteful update and was recently showcased at the Geneva Motor Show. The refreshed C (which is produced in Benz’s East London plant) should arrive in South Africa in the third quarter of 2018. Take a look at what you can expect from the latest C-Class...

Mercedes-Benz has implemented a host of changes to its successful C-Class range and although the changes may be perceived to be a meer nip-and-tuck, the brand cites the changes to be the most significant in the C's history. The C-Class’ exterior has been mildly tweaked and apart from the almost obligatory revised bumpers, the business class sedan now features a single-bar diamond grille along with Multibeam LED headlights with Ultra Beam on offer for the first time, as well redesigned taillight clusters.

The interior, however, incorporates a host of new technologies including new electronic architecture which is now said to be on par with the S-Class. A newly-designed steering wheel now affords access to more onboard and infotainment systems and the integrated control buttons respond to sweeps of the thumb, as they do in the E-Class. Most notably, an all-digital 12.3 instrument cluster will be available as an option.

Predictably, the infotainment system has been upgraded too, with a new 10.25-inch screen offered on high-end models with standard smartphone integration and a handful of new interior trim combinations.

You can also expect to see Intelligent Drive electronic assistance features, such as upgraded radar and camera systems, as well as semi-autonomous driving functionality on the options list.

Engine Choice

The facelifted C-Class will be headlined by this, a more powerful C 43 4Matic with 287 kW and 520 Nm.

As for engines, a new 4-cylinder, 1.5-litre petrol engine makes its way into the C200 with 135 kW and 280 Nm of torque and mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. This mild hybrid offering is supplemented with a 48-volt onboard network and the EQ Boost integrated starter-generator that produces an additional 10kW and 160Nm at lower revs. The C200 will also be be offered with all-wheel drive and new-generation 2.0-litre turbopetrol is also expected with outputs of around 220 kW and 400 Nm.

On the diesel front, a new 4-cylinder 2.0-litre turbodiesel with outputs of 143 kW and 400 Nm of torque will be offered in the C220d.

The range-topping Mercedes-AMG C 43 4Matic boasts a more powerful twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol V6 engine with outputs of 287 kW, 17 kW more than before, with the same torque figure of 520 Nm of torque. The sprint from zero to 100 kph will take 4.7 seconds. Mercedes-Benz also used the Geneva Motor Show to showcase a pre-production plug-in hybrid diesel version destined for the C-Class and E-Class.

Local availability?

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is produced in East London for local and international markets and production of the facelifted C-Class is due to start in July 2018 with local introduction expected during the third quarter of 2018. Local specification and pricing will be announced closer to launch and we will keep you informed as more information becomes available.

Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG Coupe

Soon after Saloon and Estate, the Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC Coupé and Cabriolet are set to receive their own extensive update. Shared visual features are the twin-louvre AMG radiator grille, muscular front apron and new rear apron with round twin tailpipe trim elements. The interior benefits from an optional fully digital cockpit with distinctive AMG displays and the new generation of steering wheels. The 3.0-litre V6 biturbo engine now delivers 287 kW (390 hp). Together with the fast-reacting AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G transmission and rear-biased AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive, it has been possible to further enhance the driving dynamics and agility.

"With the new C43 4MATIC Coupé and Cabriolet, we offer our customers extensively upgraded, visually and technically distinctive entry-level options into the performance world of Mercedes-AMG," says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

With a host of carefully coordinated measures, the developers at AMG have further improved the driving dynamics. The 3.0-litre V6 engine now delivers 287 kW (390 hp) and therefore 17 kW (23 hp) more than before. The peak torque of 520 Newton-metres is available in a broad engine speed band from 2500 to 5000 rpm. The new C43 4MATIC Coupé accelerates from rest to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, while the Cabriolet does the same in 4.8 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe and cabriolet revealed ahead of New York

Revised two-door models set to make public debut at next week’s Big Apple event

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the facelifted C-Class coupé and cabriolet ahead of their planned public debut at next week’s New York motor show.

The appearance of the reworked two-door C-Class models follows the unveiling of the facelifted four-door C-Class saloon and estate at the recent Geneva motor show. Along with some predictably subtle exterior styling tweaks and upgraded interior appointments, they have a series of midlife mechanical changes, including a more powerful engine in the four-wheel-drive C43 4Matic.

That model retains the same turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine used by the predecessor saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet models, but gains an additional 23bhp (to 386bhp) while running the same 383lb ft of torque as before.

Despite the increase in power for the new C43 4Matic, though, Mercedes-AMG quotes the same 0-62mph and top speed figures as the outgoing model at a respective 4.7sec and limited 155mph.

Also new for the facelifted C-Class is an entry-level EQ Boost mild-hybrid powertrain to be offered in selected markets, including the UK, from the middle of the year.

Based on Mercedes’ newly developed turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 181bhp and 206lb ft of torque, the powertrain features a belt-driven alternator capable of providing an additional 140bhp and 118lb ft of torque for short periods for improved accelerative ability and smoothness at low revs.

To be fitted to the C200 EQ Boost and C200 4Matic EQ Boost saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet models, the new petrol-electric powertrain also receives a 48V electric architecture for added efficiency. It operates in combination with the belt-driven alternator and lithium-ion battery to recuperate up to 12kW of kinetic energy during braking, as well as providing a coasting function that idles the engine during extended periods on the overrun.

In the new C200 EQ Boost Coupé, which comes as standard with a nine-speed torque converter-equipped automatic transmission, the mild-hybrid powertrain provides 0-62mph acceleration in 7.9sec and a top speed of 149mph. Despite confirming it meets the latest Euro6d TEMP emissions standards, Mercedes has yet to provide official fuel consumption and CO2 emission figures for the new model.

The new powertrain is part of a range of petrol-electric units from Mercedes, which also includes the more powerful turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. The unit is based on an EQ Boost system and will be launched in the (yet to be officially confirmed) C300 EQ Boost and C300 4Matic EQ Boost models. They are due in saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet forms and will go on sale alongside their C200 EQ Boost siblings in July.

Mercedes has yet to confirmed details of the C300 EQ Boost, although insiders have told Autocar that its combustion engine develops 255bhp and 295lb ft, with an added 16bhp and 118lb ft available via a belt-driven alternator.

Further engines confirmed for the 2018 C-Class coupé and cabriolet include a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel. It replaces the older turbocharged 2.1-litre unit in the C220d, offering an added 24bhp and the same torque rating at 191bhp and 295lb ft.

In line with their saloon and estate siblings, the C-Class coupé and cabriolet receive a subtle styling refresh with a new-look front bumper and standard-fit diamond-pattern grille insert together with standard LED headlights and full LED tail-lights.

Further changes include new trim elements and colour combinations within the interior, a standard keyless go function, a new-look stop/start button and a remote function for the C-Class cabriolet’s fabric hood, which can now be operated from outside the car.

Buyers can also option the facelifted C-Class coupé and cabriolet with a new digital instrument display that comes with three themes: classic, sport and progressive.

Mercedes-Benz refreshes C-Class coupé and cabriolet

In February 2018, Mercedes-Benz whipped the covers off its facelifted C-Class sedan. And now the Stuttgart-based automaker has revealed its similarly updated C-Class Coupé and Cabriolet models, including the obligatory Mercedes-AMG C43 variants.

As one would expect, the refreshed coupé and cabriolet versions of the C-Class – which are set to go on display at the New York International Auto Show – adopt many of the new styling cues debuted by the sedan. The two-door models likewise gain fresh engine options.

The biggest chances to the coupé and cabriolet ranges include the adoption of new four-cylinder engines (again, mirroring the sedan line-up), some of which feature Mercedes-Benz’s 48 volt on-board electrical system (dubbed “EQ Boost”), along with standard LED headlamps, an optional 12,3-inch digital cockpit, a new 10,25-inch media display, a new multifunction steering wheel (with touch-control buttons) and the latest adjustable Dynamic Body Control suspension.

As with the sedan, the C200 in coupé or cabriolet guise employs a new-generation turbocharged 1,5-litre four-cylinder petrol unit worth 135 kW and 280 N.m. The C200 is now equipped with an additional 48-volt onboard network with a belt-driven starter/alternator. A 160 N.m electric motor brings an extra 10 kW to the party to bridge “the brief moment” before the turbocharger has built up its full charge pressure. The C200 4Matic, meanwhile, is the same but adds all-wheel drive.

The C220d uses a 2,0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel mill sending 143 kW and 400 N.m to the rear wheels via a nine-speed automatic gearbox, while the Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic version of the coupé or cabriolet makes use of a 3,0-litre V6 now worth 287 kW and 520 N.m. The coupé matches the sedan’s claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4,7 seconds, while the cabriolet is one-tenth slower to the mark.

Mercedes-Benz C63 S AMG Coupe

Powerful V8 engines, thrilling driving dynamics and distinctive, motorsport-inspired equipment have turned the top-of-the-range models of the C-Class from Mercedes-AMG into best-sellers. The C63 perfectly embodies the core of the performance and sports car brand and now offers, in the guise of the Saloon, Estate, Coupé and Cabriolet (fuel consumption, combined: 10.4-9.9 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 236-227 g/km), even better dynamics and a more modern interior with extended individualisation options. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission with wet start-off clutch makes for an even more agile gearshift response. The 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine is available in two output variants rated at 350 kW (476 hp) or 375 kW (510 hp) for all four body styles and delivers a performance on a par with that of a sports car - the top speed of C63 S Saloon and Coupé is 290 km/h. Greater driving pleasure is guaranteed also by the redefined drive programs, which allow further differentiation of the road performance of the eight-cylinder engine. Visually, the looks of the new C63 are even more emotionally appealing: the AMG-specific radiator trim underscores the brand identity while emphasising the muscular appearance. The interior benefits from an optional fully digital cockpit with unmistakable AMG displays and the new generation of AMG steering wheels.

"The AMG C-Class is our best-selling model series and therefore a key cornerstone of our company's success of recent years. We have therefore increasingly expanded our C-Class offer: customers can now choose between twelve models from the C-Class family. As part of the latest facelift, we have upgraded all variants of the model series even more substantially," says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "This relates to the 43-series models and especially, of course, to the AMG C63. The perfected driving dynamics and expressive design underscore the powerful, muscular character of the rear-wheel drive icon."

The impressive driving dynamics are based, among other things, on the elaborately retuned AMG RIDE CONTROL steel suspension with adaptive damping adjustment, the electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential which is now also standard on all C63 variants, and the dynamic engine mounts, which are part of the standard equipment on all C63 S models.

Even greater emphasis on brand identity: the exterior design

The exterior of the new C63 underscores the brand identity of the performance models with the AMG-specific radiator trim with vertical louvres in high-gloss chrome. With a redesigned transverse fin in the outer air inlets, the front apron in A-wing design gives an even stronger emphasis to the width of the vehicle.

When viewed from the side, eye-catching features include the sporty side skirts plus aerodynamically optimised AMG light-alloy wheels. Their specifically designed outer aero rings and spoke geometry which has been optimised in the wind tunnel help to improve the air flow around the wheels and thus increase aerodynamic efficiency. The developers aimed for the optimal combination of aerodynamics, weight and brake cooling, for maximum performance and optimum efficiency.

There is a choice of two aerodynamically optimised wheel designs for the C63: in the standard specification, the vehicles are shod with 18-inch 10-spoke aero-wheels, painted in tantalite grey with a high-sheen finish. Standard on the S-variants and optional for the basic models, there is another, 19-inch design with five twin spokes, also painted in tantalite grey with a high-sheen finish.

Redesigned rear view

The rear view, too, with two remodelled twin tailpipe trim elements in high-gloss chrome, has a muscular look, which is reinforced by the new, more expressive diffuser. The S-versions are additionally provided with a diffuser board. The lateral air curtain look of the rear apron makes for improved air flow at the rear end, as does the spoiler lip on the boot lid (Estate: roof spoiler), which is painted in the vehicle colour.

The optional AMG Aerodynamics package for the C63 Coupé provides an even sportier look: the more expressive front splitter, spoiler lip with integral Gurney flap, broader side skirt inserts, flics in the rear bumper and more expressive diffuser insert are finished in high-gloss black.

New trim and equipment details: the interior design

The interior reinforces the dynamic calibre of the new C63 with numerous details. The standard specification includes the classic-sporty equipment with black seat covers in ARTICO man-made leather/DINAMICA microfibre, combined with trim in black piano-lacquer look/light longitudinal-grain aluminium.

New options for all four body styles include trim in anthracite open-pore oak wood, open-pore walnut plus the combination of longitudinal-grain aluminium for the doors and black open-pore ash wood for the centre console. Additionally available are AMG trim in carbon fibre/light longitudinal-grain aluminium and AMG trim in matt silver fibreglass.

The options for the upholstery are nappa leather in black, black with grey accents, red pepper/black, platinum white pearl/black and, as a new option, magma grey/black with yellow contrasting topstitching. For Saloon and Estate, a combination from the designo range comes with diamond quilting in saddle brown/black and platinum white pearl/black.

Performance seats with extended features

The optional AMG Performance seats provide optimum lateral support when adopting a dynamic driving style thanks to the special design of the seat side bolsters of the seat cushion and backrest. As an option, the seat side bolsters can be perfectly adjusted to the body contours by means of built-in air cushions. The Performance seats additionally lend the interior a sporty, distinctive character with their integral head restraints. The seats can not only be heated, but now also climatised in three levels in conjunction with leather upholstery. For the Cabriolet, there is also the optional AIRSCARF neck-level heating. The AMG Performance seats are available in all upholstery options.

Interior with innovative display concept and operating system

Whether with touchpad and Controller, Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel or via voice entry: the operating system of the C63 is just as versatile as it is flexible. All options are aimed at enabling the control tasks to be carried out as conveniently, quickly and appropriately to the situation as possible.

Just as flexible is the display of the optional fully digital instrument cluster in front of the driver with 31.2 cm (12.3-inch) screen diagonal, which brings the vehicle functions directly to life with the three AMG-specific display styles of "Classic", "Sporty" or "Supersport".

Updated Mercedes-AMG C63 gets 'better dynamics' and revamped interior
AMG has focused on handling and comfort rather than improving performance figures

The revised Mercedes-AMG C63 models keeps the same performance figures as the outgoing versions but instead focus on “even better dynamics” and a heavily revamped interior, according to the brand.

Offered in saloon, estate, coupe and cabriolet guises, the AMG-bred C-Class is the best-selling AMG series model, taking into account the C63 and C43, the gentler AMG variant intended to bring more people into the performance brand.

To improve dynamics, the C63 replaces its seven-speed Speedshift transmission with a nine-speed one for shorter shift times, while there are up to six drive programmes available: Slippery, comfort, Sport, Sport+, Race and Individual.

There is also a new set-up called AMG Dynamics which can be adjusted to match the car’s handling characteristics to different demands and driving conditions and offers for functions: Basic, Advanced, Pro and Master which are automatically selected by the respective drive programme.

For example, the Master mode which is included in the Race drive programme “guarantees optimal agility and makes ideal use of the car’s high driving dynamics potential” says AMG, by means of higher yaw rates and faster response of accelerator, gearshift and electronically controlled limited-slip differential.

In addition, there’s an optional AMG Track Pace programme which acts as a virtual race engineer for recording date when driving on closed-off race tracks.

The C63 gets adaptive damping adjustment as standard, adjusting the damping at each wheel as required. The steel suspension is made up of a four-link front axle and multi-link independent rear suspension, which uses newly developed components that “result in a very high camber stability when cornering at speed,” said AMG.

Visually, the facelifted model adopts the AMG-specific radiator trim with vertical louvres in chrome, a design feature which is spreading across AMG models to create further differentiation with standard Mercedes models.

Inside, there is a new generation of AMG steering wheel which has a flattened bottom section and is perforated in the grip area.

Mercedes’ latest infotainment system with touchpad and rotary control has also been incorporated, as well as an optional 12.3in screen which offers three AMG-specific display styles.

There is also a host of extra information intended to make the driving experience “sportier” with information such as G-Force, Race Timer and engine data.

All four variants keep the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo of the outgoing generation available in 469bhp or 503bhp outputs on its C63 and C63 S models respectively.

The fastest, and lightest, model is the C63 S coupe which hits 0-62mph in 3.9secs with a top speed of 180mph.

Prices for the cheapest model in the four-strong line-up, the saloon, start from £63,000. First deliveries are scheduled for October.

Mercedes-AMG C63 gains fresh look and more gears!

Mercedes-Benz has already revealed its facelifted C-Class range (including coupé and cabriolet models), as well as its revised C43 variants. Now, the big daddy of the line-up has been unveiled ahead of its New York International Auto Show debut: the updated Mercedes-AMG C63 (for now, images of only the coupé have been released).

The Affalterbach-based performance arm of the German brand has applied a number of changes to the sedan, coupé and cabriolet versions of its thundering C63, giving each model a fresh look (note the new AMG-specific grille and the remodelled twin tailpipe elements) and an upgraded transmission with added ratios.

Yes, while the unchanged twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8 engine is still offered in two states of tune – 350 kW/650 N.m in the standard C63 and 375 kW/700 N.m in the C63 S – the seven-speed gearbox of the pre-facelift model has been replaced with an AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission with wet start-off clutch.

Mercedes-AMG says this ‘box has been “tuned specifically for a dynamic driving experience”, with the wet start-off clutch saving weight and “optimising the response to the driver’s accelerator pedal input”. A multiple downshift function allows more spontaneous bursts of speed, while the brand claims faster gear-shifts overall.

Interestingly, Mercedes-AMG has now made the electronically controlled rear-axle limited-slip differential standard on all C63 variants. The 0-100 km/h sprint claims are unchanged, which means the C63 S still hits three figures in 3,9 seconds in coupé form (or 4,0 in sedan form), while the C63 takes 4,0 seconds (or 4,1 in sedan form).

Inside, you’ll find a new optional fully digital instrument cluster with a 12,3-inch screen diagonal, while a media display measuring 7 inches (with a resolution of 960 x 540 pixels) comes standard. An alternative here is the 10,25-inch media display (with a resolution of 1920 x 720 pixels), which comes standard in conjunction with the Comand Online system.

There’s also a new steering wheel design that Mercedes-AMG describes as “extremely sporty”, with a heavily contoured rim. Trimmed in Nappa leather, the flat-bottomed tiller features “touch control” buttons and is complemented by galvanised steering paddles.
