The f/lifted S class performance models get a makeover. Class best no doubt but that new steering wheel looks a bit off...

New engine, new transmission, new all-wheel drive, new exterior and interior design: On the S63 4MATIC+ (fuel consumption combined: 8.9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 203 g/km), Mercedes-AMG has dramatically honed the driving dynamics and looks further. For improved performance with significantly reduced fuel consumption, the AMG 4.0-litre V-8 Biturbo engine with cylinder deactivation replaces the previous 5.5-litre V-8 Biturbo. Despite the smaller displacement, the new engine puts out 450 kW (612 hp) and thus exactly 20 kW (27 hp) more than the preceding model. With a sprint time of 3.5 seconds from zero to 100 km/h, the performance luxury saloon is on par with full-blooded sports cars. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9â€'speed sports transmission replaces the previous 7-speed gearbox. This has enabled more agile response times to be achieved. The fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system provides optimal traction.

At the same time as the S63 4MATIC+, the top-of-the-range model S65 (fuel consumption combined: 11.9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 279 g/km) receives a visual update that underscores the superiority of the high-end 12-cylinder model. Its 6.0-litre V-12 Biturbo engine retains its output of 463 kW (630 hp) and peak torque of 1000 Newton metres. Thanks to the highest stage of development of the V-8 and V-12 biturbo engine, both new models deliver more output and torque than the competitors.

New MULTIBEAM LED headlamps and the updated front apron with jet wing underscore the more expressive appearance of both S-Class models. At the rear, the new apron and modified tailpipe trim add distinctive design focuses.

"Impressive power, torque and performance on the road, as well as the expressive design distinguish the new Mercedes-AMG S63 4MATIC+ and the new S65. With the S63, we additionally took a major development step that supports our leadership claim in the areas of driving dynamics, performance, traction, equipment and demonstrative comfort. The S65 with its high-torque 6.0-litre V-12 Biturbo engine remains the spearhead of the S-Class models", says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Managing Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Non-AMG models.

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class celebrated its world première with extensive innovations at the 2017 Auto Shanghai. Among the highlights is an all-new and highly efficient engine range with a series of new technologies for electrification of the powertrain. Intelligent Drive takes another step towards autonomous driving. And the undisputed leader in the premium segment with regard to comfort and wellness sets new standards in the interior. The market launch of the new S-Class starts in the European markets in July 2017.

Several new engines are planned for the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class: in-line six cylinders as diesel and petrol engines as well as a new V-8 biturbo petrol engine. In addition, Mercedes-Benz plans a plug-in hybrid with an electric range of about 50 kilometres. At the same time, ground-breaking technologies such as the 48-volt Integrated Starter Alternator and the electric booster compressor celebrate their world première.

The top-of-the-range model of Mercedes-Benz takes another big step towards autonomous driving and elevates Intelligent Drive to the next level. DISTRONIC Active Proximity Control and Active Steer Assist now provide even more comfortable support for the driver to keep a safe distance and steer. The speed is now adjusted automatically ahead of curves or junctions.

MULTIBEAM LED headlamps and ULTRA RANGE High Beam turn night into day. ROAD SURFACE SCAN, the forward-looking detection of bumps, and the curve-tilting function CURVE are further unique features of the S-Class in the segment of luxury saloons.

The ENERGIZING comfort control is a world-first entering series production: This optional feature links various comfort systems in the vehicle together, such as climate control, ambience lighting, massage and fragrancing functions, and allows customers to configure a specific wellness set-up to suit their mood or need. This enhances the physical comfort and performance on the road.

"The development of the new S-Class was extremely extensive. With a whole series of new features and functions the S-Class remains the technological pioneer", says Ola Källenius, responsible on the Board of Daimler AG for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

The flagship from Mercedes-Benz was the best-selling luxury saloon in the world in 2016. Since 2013, the company sold well over 300,000 saloons. Today there are six different S-Class body variants.

Mercedes-Benz facelifts S-Class, adds new engines

Mercedes-Benz has revealed its facelifted S-Class in Shanghai, giving its flagship sedan range a fresh engine line-up and a host of updated technology (and putting it another step closer to autonomous driving).

The brand says several new engines are planned for the updated S-Class, including inline six cylinders (in diesel and petrol flavours) and new V8 biturbo petrol units.

Mercedes-Benz also plans a plug-in hybrid with an electric range of about 50 km. At the same time, technologies such as the 48-volt integrated starter alternator and the electric booster compressor celebrate their debuts.

So, let’s have a look at the engines Mercedes-Benz has outlined.

The S350d employs a new 2,9-litre turbodiesel inline-six to make 210 kW and 600 N.m, while the S400d takes those figures to 250 kW and 700 N.m. The S560 uses a 4,0-litre V8 worth 345 kW and 700 N.m, while the Mercedes-AMG S63 manages 450 kW and 900 N.m (from its 4,0-litre V8, which replaces the outgoing 5,5-litre V8 mill). And the rear-wheel-drive Mercedes-AMG S65 still makes use of the 6,0-litre V12 to top the power charts with 463 kW and a whopping 1 000 N.m.

In addition to these models, Mercedes promises that more power units for the updated S-Class are in the works, including in-line six-cylinder petrol engines as well the plug-in hybrid mentioned above.

In terms of styling updates, all models gain a new front grille, with the versions employing six- and eight-cylinder engines sporting three twin louvres as well as vertical strips with a high-gloss black finish. Long wheelbase and V12 models gain additional chrome-finished vertical strips in the grille.

The front bumper, with its pronounced air intakes, is also new, while Mercedes-Maybach models now feature the Maybach logotype between the louvres of the grille. Also new are the crystal-look LED tail-lamps (with three horizontal pairs of fibre optics) and the redesigned lower rear bumper section.

The cabin, meanwhile, is dominated by two new high-resolution displays, each with a diagonal of 12,3 inches and blending visually under one shared glass cover. The touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel first seen on the E-Class have also made their way into the S-Class.

“The development of the new S-Class was extremely extensive. With a whole series of new features and functions the S-Class remains the technological pioneer,” said Ola Källenius, Damiler board member responsible for group research and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The S Class is getting uglier with every iteration. Dunno wtf Mercedes are thinking.

Wonder if Ray Donovan will buy one?

Can't wait to see which cadres I buy one for and can't wait to see them on the road doing half the speed limit.

Mercedes-Benz ‘won’t give up on’ V12, says executive

A Daimler board member has confirmed that Mercedes-Benz has no plans to phase out its V12, explaining that the hefty engine will remain as long as there is still a demand for it.

“The V12 is around for the foreseeable future. I don’t see that going away quickly,” Ola Kallenius, head of research and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars and member of the board of management at Daimler, told The Drive.

Kallenius explained that certain customers were not interested in the AMG performance sub-brand’s 4,0-litre V8 and that, for them, nothing less than a 12-cylinder engine would do.

“It is a small clientele of connoisseurs that love V12s. In some markets for some customers, that V12 is still the ultimate, and that’s what they want. So we will cater to that clientele with a very capable V12 for the foreseeable future,” Kallenius said.

And what about the increasingly stringent emissions regulations being applied in certain key markets?

“Whatever the regulation is, we will meet the regulation. How long that segment has legs, I don’t know, but we have no plans to give up on it,” he added.

Mercedes-Benz details new six-pot S450, S500 variants

The Mercedes-Benz S500 is now powered by an electrified inline six-cylinder.

Mercedes-Benz has revealed some more information about its facelifted S-Class range, including engine details about the new S450 and S500 variants.

The S-Class saloon family now stands at 24 models, with a choice of nine petrol and diesel engines, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, short and long wheelbase, and models branded Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG and Mercedes-Maybach.

Both the S450 and S500 employ the Stuttgart automaker’s new “systematically electrified” inline six-cylinder engine, just in different output levels. In the S450, this six-cylinder mill makes 270 kW and 500 N.m, while in S500 form these peak outputs rise to 320 kW and 520 N.m.

Mercedes says that a 49-volt integral starter/alternator is “quickly able to provide a further 250 N.m of torque and 16 kW of output”. Interestingly, compared with the old S500 (fitted with a V8 engine worth 335 kW and 700 N.m, of course), the brand says the inline-six’s CO2 emissions are down by about 22 percent.

And if you crave double the number of cylinders? Well, the updated S600 features a V12 engine worth 390 kW and 830 N.m, while the twelve-cylinder in the Mercedes-Maybach S650 and Mercedes-AMG S65 delivers 463 kW and 1 000 N.m.

Mercedes-Benz S400d 4Matic review

Should I buy one?

There will always be some who feel the need to arrive in something more exclusive than an S-Class. Yet despite the cachet associated with a Rolls-Royce Ghost or Bentley Flying Spur it is arguable whether they manage to deliver the sort of wellbeing served up by the latest incarnation of the long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz saloon flagship.

Those buying it to drive, or to be driven in, will experience an exceptional car perfectly judged to meet the demands of a discerning market.

DRIVEN: Mercedes-AMG S63 4Matic+

While at first glance this may look like a minor update, the facelift of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class includes a catalogue of notable changes, many of which have been made under the skin.

The AMG variant of the S-Class has long been a bit of an enigma, feeling somewhat distant from its smaller siblings in terms of driving dynamics. Both the E63 and C63 are known to be stern, agile and no-nonsense super-saloons, but the S63 feels something more along the lines of a long-distance mile-muncher.

In some regards, this isn’t a bad thing, although with the pre-facelift model, we pointed to the S500 as the sweet spot in the range. Its turbocharged 4,7-litre V8 mill provides more than sufficient grunt, after all, coupled with a supreme level of comfort and refinement.

But back to the updated S63. The latest model drops the brand’s M157 turbocharged 5,5-litre V8 in favour of the new M178 twin-turbo 4,0-litre V8, an engine we have praised after experiencing it in other AMG derivatives. In this application, the eight-cylinder delivers the full 450 kW, along with a torque output of 900 N.m.

Furthermore, it’s mated to a new “multi-clutch” nine-speed transmission (based on the 9G-Tronic) and delivers its power to all four wheels through the 4Matic+ system also found on the newest E63. Take note, however, that S63 models destined for South Africa will remain rear-wheel drive.

So, the S63 now has more power, more gears and more driven wheels, which may suggest it will deliver a more intense experience for the driver. In practice, however, it still feels more-or-less the same, albeit a little faster (the 0-100 km/h sprint now takes a claimed 3,5 seconds). Lower in the rev-range, the engine feels more alert, but once at cruising speeds it’s very hard to notice any major differences. The new gearbox, however, has given the S63 a softer demeanour that makes it more comfortable to use on an everyday basis.

In the bends, with the 4Matic+ system’s clever torque distribution systems working hard, the S63 displays some evidence of its weight, most notably on entry. But once you muster up the courage to place faith in the computers, it all works very well, with the Airmatic suspension allowing swift and balanced cornering without any sign of understeer.

Despite having speed-sensitive steering, the S63 doesn’t feel as direct or agile as some of its AMG siblings, which is understandable given its considerable mass. Perhaps the slightly lighter, rear-wheel-drive model coming to SA will feel a little, well, lighter on its feet.

The engine and exhaust notes are also notably softer than before. While the pipes still emit a hearty roar under aggressive throttle, the sound is relatively subdued. Engine noise entering the cabin has been significantly decreased, too, which adds to renewed levels of refinement.

Summary

The S63 is a performance car that is most comfortable out on the open road, where it will happily maintain composure at high speeds. While it certainly is capable in tight corners considering its heft, it still feels a little dynamically removed from everything else in the AMG line-up. And that leaves one wondering whether the S560, which makes use of the same engine but with a lower output of 375 kW, may well be the smarter choice.

The new powertrain in the S560 feels more in-tune with what you might expect from an S-Class, while the new M256 turbocharged 3,0-litre inline six-engine with the 48V system in the S500 (unfortunately not destined for South Africa) is also a treat to drive.

As a show-piece, however, the AMG-badged model is hard to beat. For those who crave a brutish, two-tonne luxury sedan, the S63 satisfies … and even more so than before, thanks to the significant under-the-skin changes that have been made.
