This new light-weight engine produces 133kW and a whopping 430Nm of torque.

Yes please! will pull that boat no problem!

Maybe trade your Thar

haha no thank you. That Triton starts at R479 900. That is more than double the price of my Thar.

Also did some reading on the Foton Granite(from that chinese bakkie thread). For 100k less than the Triton you could have a good bakkie. Foton uses cummins engines which according to some Diesel mech friends of mine is some of the best engines in the world. Just not sure about the build quality of the rest of the vehicle.

The new Mitsubishi Triton double-cab bakkie has been launched in South Africa, and is priced from R479 900.

The local range comprises four double-cab models, each powered by the Japanese brand’s new 2,4-litre turbodiesel engine. This new four-cylinder unit is worth 133 kW (at 3 500 r/min) and 430 N.m (at 2 500 r/min), and can be paired with either a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission.

The range-toppers come with the brand’s Super Select II four-wheel-drive system, which includes four modes (2H, 4H, 4HLc and 4LLc) and 215 mm ground clearance.

All models are covered by a three-year/100 000 km warranty and come standard with a five-year/90 000 km service plan.

Look out for our driving impression of this new double-cab later in the week.

Pricing:
Mitsubishi Triton 2,4-litre Di-D 4×2: R479 900
Mitsubishi Triton 2,4-litre Di-D 4×2 (auto): R499 900
Mitsubishi Triton 2,4-litre Di-D 4×4: R539 900
Mitsubishi Triton 2,4-litre Di-D 4×4 (auto): R559 900

The engine will run forever regardless of the body collapsing all around it. Sorta like a Mazda 323 (tarzankarretjie) :D

That said, this is a lot of money for a bakkie. But I guess they are all around that price these days. My old man still has his 1997 Colt Rodeo D/C with near on 700k KM on the odo, so they seem pretty reliable :)

This should've been released before the Fullback.

I quite like it. It's also the cheapest of the big name bakkies (not sure about the Mazda though?) and Mitsubishi has shown how reliable their bakkies can be. Still way too expensive for me though :(
