The only thing that I find dissapointing in the specs is the no 3G support. Would adding a 3G chip (maybe just a slower one) really have added so much to the price? In the US it is fine...but in a country where WiFi is still very very sparse...a tab with no 3G aint gonna be all that popular.

No but it would have cause issues with the SP's who would want to test every bloody update before allowing OTA. This way you get it fresh off the Google factory floor on every Update.

But they selling it through the Play store...would not be branded or tested by the SP's then surely? Only if it gets sold via the SP will they want to test the OS?

And what do you think will happen if Vodacom or MTN started selling them in SA?

Besides Bluetooth tether is not the end of the world, if you so desperately need internet on the move.

I don't think so. It's direct from Google- and given the no 3G, no reason for SP's to test it out...

For $199 (R1600 at the current rate), I can live without 3G :)

Just out of interest....why do you guys think Google did not use Motorola to build this tablet? I mean they spent all that money on buying Motorola Mobility....why not use them???

Google has stated many times that they intend to run Motorola Mobility as a completely separate business. If Motorola starts launching Nexus devices and is the first manufacturer to get access to new versions of Android, this could easily provoke a freak-out among the other Android OEMs. I'm guessing this might have something to do with it.

The only way to buy this directly from Google in South Africa is to use a service like MyUS.com to actually buy the tablet for you which would set you back 5-10% of the item's price, and that's excluding delivery and customs costs. You can't use a VPN to buy it. You HAVE to have an American/UK credit card. Virtual credit cards also don't work unfortunately (source).

Reason being is that Google doesn't want you to have the tablet in a country that doesn't support the Play Store fully yet (ie. no magazines, series, etc.). It's pretty crappy but it seems the only way to buy it is to either buy it in-store or to get it through someone that lives in an eligible country.

OR you could buy it from other places like Clove.co.uk or Gamestop.com but I don't know what the prices would be like.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuuuu~ why is it so hard to buy this from SA? I blame the guava-ment. If our copyright laws were up to scratch Play Store would probably be available in SA.

The acquisition was only completed ± 2 months ago, (May 22nd to be exact) while they announced the acquisition in August of 2011, Motorola only became part of the Google family ±2months ago, which doesn't give Google much time for them to develop any Google/Nexus device via Motorola in time for I/O anyways.
