I think the back to home is just a fancy wrapper for Wireguard, so if your son's endpoint terminates at your home IP address I think that it would work.

That being said I don't know if the DSTV apps use location-based checking for authentication or anything like that.

Wife is travelling for work and she wanted to watch MotoGP last weekend, she Tailscaled into the home network and DSTV app worked great from her iPad. Wireguard should offer the same / similar functionality
 
Coming to the pros for assistance again. I am trying to clean up my Network a bit from a hardware perspective (Used to be in a 374sqm house, with Mikrotik, 2 Archers (for wired connectivity and 2.4Ghz Wifi) and 3 DECOs. Moved to an apartment so this is all overkill. Currently having the Mikrotik, 1 Archer (wired connectivity and 2.4Ghz Wifi) and 1 DECO.
The Archer on 2.4 is to be able to split the 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz bands, as the DECO uses 1 SSID for both bands.

I had 2.4 and 5 active on the Mikrotik, but every time I connected to the 5Ghz, I get the following in the Logs:
router was rebooted without proper shutdown by watchdog timer
and the Mikrotik reboots. So trying to get this to work, as I might be able to get away from the Deco and Archer and run all wired and wireless directly from the Mikrotik

My settings are under Wireless (not WiFi)

And some point I installed a Wireless package cause I couldn't get it to work without it, but now I am stuck with this thing rebooting the whole time

Please guide me Gurus!

First thing I'd check, is the power supply the correct voltage/amperage?

Check under System -> Watchdog that you don't have anything enabled there.

Also check under any PoE Out ports, if you have, as they can also have ping watchdogs (Power Cycle Ping) there that can reboot the router if a certain device does not respond (example of my router below).

This was enabled, so I disabled it now

Legend right here. I see it was running off a 9v D-Link adapter. Popped my trusty Ratel 860p back in there (I know it has 12v ports), and all seems well now. Thanks @quovadis

Yeah 9v would have been pushing it, since those are meant for 12-57v IIRC :)

Problem is I have been running all my networking devices off DC units since loadshedding screwed us so badly, so I have no idea where the actual transformers are for which devices (and a house move a month ago made it even worse) :)
 
So as per my original post about getting the WiFi to work on the Tik, I am now in a position to disable my last S4 Deco, as well as my last Archer C64, only using the Tik for connectivity. I am losing one LAN port from the C64, but my TV can run off WiFi, should be fine
 
Looks like I spoke too soon. The devices keep disconnecting (assuming this is where the watchdog settings would have rebooted the router.

Some things to try - ensure country selection is correct, set a fixed channel and not one that's DFS, change SSID to a new one to test and eliminate/check for any band-steering/fast-roaming/minimum signal strength etc.
