eScan highlights serious flaws in MIUI; Xiaomi dismisses the findings in the report

eScan, a security company that focuses on providing Enterprise Security has issued a new report highlighting many security flaws in the MIUI operating system. To be clear, the report points out at flaws and ‘un-intentional vulnerabilities’ in the user apps and other security apps. According to the report, MIUI system apps are responsible for the vulnerabilities. The major points highlighted in the report state that the 13 percent of smartphone users in India with Xiaomi smartphones are at ‘a significant threat’ because of the ‘laxity’ that ‘MIUI OS has about security.’

so i bricked my p9 lite and am in the market for a new phone, been looking at the note 4 from afrihost @ R3599 with 12 months 500mb data. i see the note 3 is R2799 with 1gb for 12 months. i see the Redmi 4x is out for R2799 Here.

I'm undecided, this will leave me completely broke so the saving by taking the 4x or note 3 would be nice, but at the same time it might be worth it to get the note 4 in the long term. advice?

Take the note 3, see below link for a comparison between the Note 3 and 4X , i'll leave out the Note 4 because you will be broke if you take it.

Let's quote more than just the sensationalist first paragraph:

We reached out to Xiaomi for a comment on the accusations and Xiaomi provided an official statement regarding the issues pointed by eScan.

The smartphone maker stated that it strongly disagrees with the allegations made by eScan. It pointed out that eScan report assumes that you would need an unlocked device without any password, PIN, pattern or fingerprint security enabled.

Addressing the concerns associated with Mi Mover app, Xiaomi pointed out that this tool is made to make it convenient for users to switch from old smartphone to a new one. It also pointed out that the users require a password for Mi Mover to initiate the process. To use the Mi Mover app, the users need to unlock their smartphones. Which means that using Mi Mover app requires two separate layers of security protection.

This makes the type of attacks mentioned her as theoretical at best. Xiaomi pointed out that to stop your private data from leaking, users should ensure that they don’t lose their smartphone or give away the unlock PIN, password or pattern to anyone else.

I decided to go the minimalist route and keep a relatively clean homescreen whilst moving all my crap to the second screen :D

Not a massive difference between note 3 and 4, so take the 3.

Okay so Note 3 it is, i'm still worried about how long it'll keep me happy though.
Taking the note 4 would make me broke but i will survive the month. Will the note 3 be updated to Nougat ? or only the note 4.

EDIT: suddenly the afrihost page states out of stock, 10 minutes ago it stated "on promotion" instead.

No mention of Nougat for Note 3, also XDA reports that Google HDR+ does not work on Note 3 even when using custom ROM's.

Can you not get a loaner till the end of the month and go for Note 4 without the money worries then?

I usually have more than one screen. Main screen tend to have comms apps (g+, whatsapp, telegram, sms) then a screen dedicated to work stuff (vpn, remote desktop, ssh shell etc, then another screen for games, another for weather channel widgets etc.

Then buy the Note 4 on your credit card (if you have one), take it over 6 months interest free, then next month you can pay the device off.

Save the difference and get the Note 3. It will get MIUI 9 and that is what matters.

After having a Samsung S5, I have loved every day eith my Note 3 and will change to a Note 5 next year.

Note 4 is far too closely specced and built to Note 3 to justify me upgrading to it, or you spending more based on your financial situation. If the Rand difference meant nothing to you, then I would say Note 4 just because it is newer and has even better battery life.

Takealot still has Note 3's last time I checked.

Finally my phone arrived....and I must say I am really impressed with my MI6 so far,
Got it from gearbest and other then taking them long to package I didnt have any other issues with them.
Once it was shipped it arrived in 4 days but had to pay about R312.00 to Aramex for Customs/Duty including the 50 bucks Disbursement fee.
I however think they made up the whole amount because having a look at there tracking it said cleared from customs, and when I called they didnt have an invoice but it was already at the warehouse in Linbro park a(went to pick it up there as I coudnt wait for Monday).
Paid them anyways, they quickly made an invoice for me and left with my shiny new MI6.
@CamiKaze what are your thoughts of the MI6 so far?

Interesting. With other phones I cannot delete preinstalled apps.

But with the Xiaomi I can. Cool.

Already deleted the faceboob and swiftkey apps

Edit : seems that you can only delete certain apps. Good step in the right direction, if I don't want anything, it must go.
Why delete SwiftKey? It's the best keyboard app...
