I'm interested in getting one, what's your general review on the phone, I currently have a huwei p8 lite lol on FNB connectSo already picked up an issue with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8.
It supports Telkoms Band 40 and carrier aggregation so will show 4G+
It does not support Band 1 + Band 3 carrier aggregation or 3Ca at all so that means normal LTE on Cellc,MTN and Vodacom.
At Work on Samsung S10 I get 80Mbps with 2 carrier aggregation. The Redmi Note 8 peaks at 30Mbps. At Work I get 105Mbps on MTN with 3 carrier aggregation B1+B3+B8 on the S10 while I get 25Mbps on the Redmi Note 8.
The Samsung LTE radio is far superior than the Redmi Note 8 which is a bit disappointing to be honest because phones priced at the same price range as this Xiaomi from Chinese brands like the Meizu does support multiple carrier aggregation including some Huawei devices.
The S10 is also generally fast than then Xiaomi but that I don't complain about as it is a R3049 phone vs a R15 000 so it's obviously going to be faster.
If you can look past some of these negatives and focus on the fact that after a full day of use like I use my S10 with the same apps, camera and data my S10 is dead by 15:00 while currently my Redmi Note 8 is still at 56% battery and I used the device a lot browsing, facebook ect.

This is a really good phone. Having switched to it for a full week since I got it from my S10 it really feels like a premium phone. Very good screen and to be honest at the size of phone screen it's hard to tell the difference between a 4k screen and a 1080p screen. Yes I guess if you really try and see you will likely pick up something but for me the general use I put it through I did not notice that I went from a Premium phone to a Mid ranger.
Screen very good. Camera good quality very responsive when taking pictures and general phone speed and app speed was really really good. Cool white meaning the white is whiter than the warmer white of the S10. I like that. You can schedule dark and normal mode for the UI which I love actually. Battery life is where this phone shines. Installed all the apps that I have on my S10 and used on a daily basis. The S10 managed to just scrape by by the end of the day. The Redmi Note 8 still has 58% now and that is with a dual sim in both active and CS Wave VOIP app running in the background with sleep disabled on my VOIP app so it's always active. Not bad at all.
The S10 obviously has some premium features that I like. The LTE radio on the S10 is well a masterpiece! So good supporting all the carrier aggregation configurations of all the networks. That means you get the best possible LTE speeds the network has to offer. The Xiaomi is lacking a bit there but on Telkom the xiaomi performed the same with decent speeds and 4G+
I would really recommend the Redmi Note 8 over any other phone of the same price range. At R3199 or R3049 with a Takealot.com voucher it just is THE best. It feels so good in the hand with glass back and very cool Neptune blue I really like it. I like it A LOT! I actually going to keep using it mainly because of the battery life, triple sim tray 2 x nano and 1 x microsd and well because it's performing very well.
Disappointed about the LTE Radio that does not support more carrier aggregation combos and the Auto brightness seems a bit off dimming it a bit too much in darker areas but other than that I would say go for it you won't make a mistake.
Wow thank you for the detailed information. Really appreciate it, everything made sense to me besides the LTE radio thing, if it's speed affecting, won't really make much of a difference to me as I really don't need heavy lifting in terms of download speed on a phone but thank you again.
PS: I got like 700 rand in ebucks so it will be like 2400
If anyone hasn't bricked their Mi A2 Lite, I've got a cover and tempered glass screen protector to give away at no charge. You'll just need to arrange to get them from me. I live in Edenvale, JHB.
Yep, Xiaomi doesn't do carrier aggregation very well. I don't think there is any phone that actually does any decent aggregation in their lineup. It's actually a known thing on the global mi forums. I have both the mi 8 and redmi note 8 and they only do up 2CA. However both chipsets in these phones should technically be able to do 4CA. It doesn't look like they are gonna fix this as even some of the latest models still suffer from this CA issue. So already picked up an issue with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8.

Their phones offered good value for money but poor CA is a big deal breaker.
Shame the Rand is nearly R18 to Dollar. Could be 400-900 cheaper.
I get upto 180Mbps on mtn using my mi8, would that be CA?Yeah for me as a network speed fundi always expecting the best speeds it means 35Mbps on the Redmi Note 8 vs 100Mbps on the S10 on the same tower same network.
Only difference is 3 carrier aggregation vs 1 LTE carrier.
I still think xiaomi is a great value for money phone. Personally I don't need such exorbitant speeds when I'm away from my home fiber. What use case scenario(s) is there typically for 4CA?Yep, Xiaomi doesn't do carrier aggregation very well. I don't think there is any phone that actually does any decent aggregation in their lineup. Yeah it shows 4g+Yes have to. Do you see 4G+? I only see 4G+ on Telkom and speeds are the same as on my B618 so I know that is 4G+
Yeah it shows 4g+

It's just about better speeds. Depending on the configuration that snapdragon 845 chipset can get speeds in the Gigabit range theoretically. In a real world scenarios we should get over 100mbps easily.I still think xiaomi is a great value for money phone. Personally I don't need such exorbitant speeds when I'm away from my home fiber. Still, I have a 50mbps fibre line and don't personally need faster. I already stream 3 android boxes and do some downloading with capacity to spare. As an example of usage, streaming dstv now @1080p only takes around 5-8 mbps, netflix at UHD takes around 20 - 25mbps at most. It's just about better speeds. In general 4CA would give out double the speed of 2CA if the same kind of config is used.
These speeds are important to me as someone who uses my phone as a hotspot for my pc at times and I am not covered by fibre in my area so LTE is all I have. Hence I need utmost performance from my devices in terms of LTE speed.
If you are rooted you may check which bands are being aggregated with network signal guru app and mimo info as well.Yeah it shows 4g+
Mtn is probably just about the only carrier in SA that enjoys decent CA with the Mi 8.Wow nice speed. That is at least 3 carrier aggregation.
