Should I buy one?

Unlike its electric counterpart, the petrol-powered Mokka has no shortage of rivals. First impressions suggest that, while enjoyable in isolation, it isn’t the most engaging compact crossover - that honour still goes to the Ford Puma.

Instead, it’s the combination of equipment, practicality, pricing and standout styling that is sure to resonate. And for a class where driver appeal is rarely top of customer wish lists, that may be all that matters.

Vauxhall Mokka and Renault Kangoo earn four-star NCAP ratings

Cupra Leon gains five stars, while Mercedes GLA and EQA undergo further testing

The new Vauxhall Mokka SUV and Renault Kangoo MPV have gained a four-star safety verdict in Euro NCAP’s latest round of testing, while the Cupra Leon earned the same five-star rating as its Seat sibling.

The tests focused on side impact protection for both adults and children and analysed safety features on each model with standard equipment.

The Mokka, which is now based on Stellantis’ Common Modular Platform (CMP) scored a 75% child occupant score, with a slightly lower 72% adult occupant score. It was also awarded 64% for its safety assist systems and 58% for protecting vulnerable road users.

Overall, the Mokka scored four stars out of five, losing marks for its lack of automatic emergency braking and centre airbag.

“The new Mokka lacks some critical safety systems that have become increasingly commonplace by now. The latest edition clearly lacks the ambition of the previous Mokka that was a runner-up of 2012 Best in Class in the Small Family category,” said Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP’s secretary general.

The Renault Kangoo also secured a four-star score, scoring an 87% adult occupant score and a 87% child occupant score, along with a 67% vulnerable road user score and 72% for its safety assist systems.

The Kangoo was praised for its safety systems offered as standard but lacked in other areas. “Renault has launched a respectable successor that performs well in general and lacks only a centre airbag as far as state-of-the-art protection is concerned,” said van Ratingen.

Opel Mokka and Renault Kangoo get four-star ratings in NCAP crash test

The second-generation Opel Mokka, which makes the switch from GM’s Gamma II platform to Stellantis’s Common Modular Platform, has garnered a respectable four-star rating from the Euro NCAP after a series of crash tests. This is the same platform used for the Citroen C4 and ë-C4 which were tested last month.

The Opel Mokka missed out on the fifth star due to it having no active emergency braking for cyclists or a centre airbag. NCAP notes that the Opel Mokka’s passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal offset test. Protection of the driver dummy’s chest was rated as marginal, based on measurements of compression during the test. Protection of the driver’s knees and femurs, and right tibia, were also rated as marginal.

Analysis of the deformable impact barrier after the test, and of decelerations of the trolley during the test, indicated that the Opel Mokka would be a benign crash partner in collisions with other vehicles. Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. A geometric assessment of the rear seats also indicated good whiplash protection.

Yes, the Mokka-e is undeniably very, very green, but is it any good?

It's no secret that Vauxhall, part of the Stellantis super group, are looking to reinvent themselves and the dramatic design language of the Mokka-e is evidence of this.

As this green machine has been on a long term loan to the Fully Charged production crew we caught up with these camera shy folk to find out what they think.

It's a nice, small and cheap(ish) electric car, with a few shortcomings. As it is built on a multi-energy platform (there are petrol and diesel versions) you simply don't get the back seat or boot space that a ground-up built EV can offer and when you take it out on the motorway, the range is less impressive.

This man has worked at Vauxhall for 75 years

The retirement age is creeping up, we're told. Bryan Webb's departed Vauxhall at 90

What were you doing 75 years ago? We’re going to hedge our bets you’d not been born yet. Same for your parents. Perhaps, even, your grandparents.

Well, Bryan Webb – of Gloucester – was clocking in for work at Vauxhall as a mechanical apprentice (he's third from left in the B&W image). And this week he’s just clocked out for the last time. A 90-year old-man calling time on a career spanning back to 1946.

He’s described by Vauxhall as “one of the longest serving members of staff with the British automotive brand”. One of. We knew the retirement age was edging ever upwards, but crikey…

His final role at the brand has been his for the last 34 years, as warranty administrator of Baylis Vauxhall Group, where we’re told “he still wore the watch that was handed to him in 1970 in recognition of 25 years of service”.

Bryan’s had seven different roles at Vauxhall, owning “a succession of” the brand’s cars in that time. We’re not told which, but we dearly hope a rogue Monaro or VX220 has somehow found its way in there. His farewell picture sees him – looking good for his 90 years – stood proudly between a Viscount and a new electric Mokka.

Electric supermini gains 6% increase from 209 to 222 miles, while crossover rises by 4% from 201 to 209 miles

The Vauxhall Corsa-e and Vauxhall Mokka-e electric cars have gained increased ranges, thanks to new mechanical changes and the addition of more efficient tyres.

The range of the supermini has risen by 6%, from 209 to 222 miles, while the crossover has increased 4%, from 201 to 209 miles.

One of the key reasons the increase has been made possible is because of improved efficiency from the heat pump, which controls the temperature of the interior. This is also now included as standard on both cars.

“Heat pumps are more efficient than conventional HVAC systems, as they require less energy from the battery, to the benefit of driving range,” Vauxhall said. “Customers will notice the improvements particularly when driving in the winter months.”

Both have also gained a set of low-rolling-resistance tyres (with an A+ rating), which are designed to reduce energy loss. The tyres measure 16in for the Corsa-e and 17in for the Mokka-e.

The models have also gained a new transmission reducer, which converts motor revs to wheel speed to optimise range.

Other manufacturers have also recently increased range on some of their electric models.

Vauxhall cuts Corsa-e and Mokka-e prices by £3000

British brand is first to react to reduction of UK's Plug-in Car Grant announced last week

Vauxhall has become the first manufacturer to cut the price of its electric cars in response to the recent shock reduction in the UK government’s Plug-in Car Grant (PiCG).

The firm’s two electric cars, the Vauxhall Corsa-e and Vauxhall Mokka-e, are now £3000 cheaper than they were previously, creating a significant saving for buyers.

The government slashed the PiCG for buyers of new EVs by £1000 last week, while also reducing the number of cars eligible for the scheme.

It previously offered buyers of electric cars 35% off the purchase price up to a maximum of £2500. That maximum has now been cut to £1500. At the same time, the maximum recommended retail price of vehicles eligible for the grant has been reduced from £35,000 to £32,000.

As a result, the Corsa-e now starts at £25,805 post-PicG and the Mokka-e at £29,365. Previously, the supermini was priced from £27,805 and the crossover from £31,365.

Addressing the price drop, Vauxhall managing director Paul Willcox said: “Vauxhall wants to move the UK to electric motoring as quickly as possible, which is why we have committed to being an electric-only brand from 2028.

New Vauxhall Mokka In-Depth 2022 Review - Trendiest Crossover? - OSV​

Vauxhall needs more of a competitive presence in the industry's fastest growing segment, that for small trendy SUVs. And, courtesy of PSA engineering, this second generation Mokka model provides it.

There's nothing that changes the class norm here, but we can't remember a more visually appealing Vauxhall in recent memory - and that has to be a good thing.

Prices for the British brand's two best-selling models have dropped by as much as £3290

Vauxhall has adjusted the pricing and specification line-up of the Corsa supermini and the Mokka crossover with the introduction of a new GS Line trim level.

The Vauxhall Corsa and Vauxhall Mokka trims are now Design, GS Line and Ultimate.

The British brand said this refreshed hierarchy offers a “clearer choice of models for buyers”.

GS Line replaces SRi Edition, while Design takes the place of SE Edition, but both retain the same level of equipment.

Standard equipment for the Corsa includes automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and a 7.0in infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

GS Line trim comes with new 17in black wheels, keyless entry, climate control and black exterior styling elements. It also grants access to a 72bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine that wasn't available on SRi Edition.

Prices start from £19,490, representing a £1000 price reduction from the SRi Edition.

Funky looking Opel Mokka has arrived on our shores – we have pricing!

Stellantis has been rolling out a spectrum of new vehicles in all of their subsidiary companies over the past year. Today, the limelight is on Rüsselsheim based manufacturer and their new SUV. Say hello to the funky looking Opel Mokka, we quite like the looks and the pricing isn’t too bad either.

South Africa will receive two trim levels of the Corsa based SUV, namely being the Elegance and the top-spec GS Line. The GS Line includes standout safety features such as active cruise control, active lane keep assist and forward collision avoidance. The interior offers a 10-inch infotainment system with onboard navigation and a 12-inch digital driver’s cluster while occupants get to enjoy leather seats that have massage capability.

The Elegance derivative on the other hand includes a 7-inch infotainment system with a 7-inch digital cluster for the driver. The long list of standard safety features include lane keep assist, forward brake assist, blind spot detection and cruise control. Both models in the range employ 17-inch rims with the Elegance equipped with bi-colour alloy wheels as opposed to the black alloy wheels on the GS Line.

Both models are equipped with a 96 kW and 230 N.m 1.2-litre petrol engine which is paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The claimed 6,1 L/100 km in the funky looking Opel Mokka paired with its 44 litre fuel tank means the SUV can go over 700 km between filling up.

Pricing starts from R469 900 on the Elegance while the GS Line is a smidge over half a million, asking R519 900. Both come with a 4 year / 60 000 km service plan and 3 year / 120 000 km warranty.

The outgoing Opel Mokka didn’t quite penetrate the local compact SUV market but when the new generation Opel Mokka was revealed back in 2020, it was a major leap forward over its predecessor, particularly in terms of styling.

The new Mokka is powered by an all-electric powertrain as well as conventional petrol and diesel engines (market dependent).

In South Africa, the new Opel Mokka is only available with a turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol engine with 96 kW and 230 Nm and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The electric Mokka has not yet been confirmed for introduction in South Africa.
