Definitely a fair question. Nonetheless, I've decided to try and stretch the budget to a GTX 1070, even if it means that I have to wait a while. Based on comparisons that I've been watching online, it has a significant edge over the 1060. Also, I was thinking that I could (should I want to upgrade later) add another GTX 1070. The 1060, on the other hand, doesn't support SLI.

On that note, anyone have an opinion on the Gigabyte GA-H170-Gaming 3 DDR3 motherboard?

Don't get a DDR3 board if you're going Skylake.

Seen a number of manufacturers updating their mobo BIOS to accept Kabylake - which hopefully means a reduction in Skylake prices.

And agreed: if you're going Skylake, go DDR4, even if DDR3 is slightly cheaper.

Improved speed upgrade for gaming laptop

My latest results on the same laptop, but with upgrade to SDD and improved RAM. Laptop benchmark with http://www.userbenchmark.com/: :)

UserBenchmarks: Game 27%, Desk 66%, Work 45%
CPU: Intel Core i7-4700HQ - 71.3%
GPU: Nvidia GTX 760M - 20.3%
SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 1TB - 107.7%
RAM: Corsair Vengeance SODIM DDR3 1600 C9 2x8GB - 59.2%
MBD: Asus G56JR

Congrats, what was the deciding factor for you going 144hz 1080p monitor vs a 1440p monitor?

I have a high res monitor at work and on my laptop...wanted to see what high hertz is like. Also wasn't fancying upgrading my graphics card.

Cool! On a somewhat related note, I saw COD Infinite Warfare (console version) on a 50 inch plus curved samsung TV (possibly 4k) in the display window at Dion Wired. It looked so amazing, colours so vivid, etc...

What does one need in a PC Gaming setup to get that, screen wise? Is that what you need a 1440p 27" plus size monitor for?

144Hz is for high refresh rates ideal for fps games. For 144Hz you need minimum gtx1070 at 1080p or 1440p, maybe even a gtx1080 at 1440p.
For 4k gaming (depending on the game) at decent frame rates look at 2x 1070s, 2x 1080s, 1x titan x or 2x titan x all depends on how heavy the game is and you are not going to hit 144Hz at 4k.

Whatever worked on the console will work on a pc but for display purposes the usually just ram up the tv colours etc, unless the game & tv had hdr support.

Thanks ponder.

Do you guys think a 144hz screen is wasted on someone with bad eyesight and slower reflexes?

If i had to get a new screen now, i'd be tempted to go for the below to go with my gtx 1080. Would 6ms be bad for FPS gaming?

Hi everyone. I purchased an Asus ROG laptop in 2011 that drew it's last breath yesterday. I need to get a new PC and I am lost as it has been more than 5 years since I last bought one. Can someone suggest a build and supplier?

1. I do not travel with my PC so the laptop was basically stationary - when I built my own PCs ten years ago a desktop offered more value for money than a laptop - I assume it is still the case?
2. Budget = R15k excluding monitor, mouse, keyboard, HDDs (I have an SSD and HD from my old laptop) and OS (I will get an OEM Windows 10 from Kinguin)

Thanks!

Scroll back to post #2042, http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ild-Thread?p=18407452&viewfull=1#post18407452 to give you an idea what R15k can buy you these days.

I'll try to do a fresh build with up to date prices & take into consideration that you already have extras like hdd/ssd, maybe we can fit a gtx1070 into your budget. I will get back to you later.

Is it worth it to import a GPU from Amazon? I see one can save around R1000 on a GTX 1060.

Does that R1000 saving include the shipping & duties+vat? Not that it's much but the biggest issue is that if something goes wrong and you have to ship it back for warranty issues it's gonna cost a small bundle.
